They would show movies like this on Saturdays in the afternoon in early 1960s. Always enjoyed them. It was a great afternoon treat, especially on Saturday.
I love this movie - I remember my dad taking the family to the outside drive-in to watch this movie when it came out. All the boys wanted to be Hercules. RIP Mr. Steve Reeves.🙏❤️
Primo Carnera, the ogre who fought Hercules in the beginning of the film, was a heavyweight professional boxer who is the only one who won all his fights with knockouts in 1933-1934.
These type of bodies are purely modern fiction, first of all it's not effective for a warrior to have such inflated muscles. These are not the long lean and diversified muscles that give strength and speed. Those are weightlifting muscle that rigidify the body.
This is possibly the greatest sword and sandal epic fantasy of all time. When you consider the cinematography and staging, the story. the great actors, the dialogue and the immortal music by Enzo Masetti starting with the Evening Star theme, it is hard to match. Steve Reeves as Hercules, Sylvia Koscina as Iole and Sylvia Lopez as Queen Omphale- wow gorgeous people. And not to mention the many other awesome players who acted here. Of course, they are all gone at this point. Do not want to bum people out but not many realize that Sylvia Lopez died of leukemia at age 26 shortly after this film came out, Sad and hard to believe. So, a salute to everyone involved in this film because life is short and its a bit miraculous when someone is able to leave a mark that gives people joy, by the Gods!!!
It created the Peplum industry & made Reeves a 🌟, not because of the budget production but because of the American promotion that was more $ than was spent making the movie, kinda like when Jaws opened in record # of theatres, both changed the way Hollywood did (show) business.
Greatest sword & sandal is Ben-Hur, Best Picture Oscar winner, though Hercules is mythological & Ben biblical, also more sandal & chariot, did Reeves ever hold a sword? As Morgan perhaps?

@@unowen-nh9ov Yes...moral quality. This was great Saturday afternoon matinee and drive-in movie entertainment back in the late 50s and early 60s. I probably saw this at a drive-in with the family on Friday night about 1960 or so.
I love Hercules movies with Steve reeves. He is perfect as him. Women actually look more feminine too. It’s a shame men are not men anymore. But I guess that’s what happens with equality and feminism. It’s nice to separate the sexes but it seems like people are more or less becoming beings where they really don’t know what sex they are so they choose to be bi-sexual. Which is even more confusing. So what are you? A man whom loves women or a man whom loves men? If your a woman do you love men ? Or do you love women? We may never know cause I don’t think they really know. Bless them all. Sex is very confusing. This movie is great!❤
Ahnuld wouldn't acknowledge Reeves as his role model because he knew he literally couldn't measure up, instead he went with Reg Park, Steve busted him on it when they met.
Hey, don't pass up the dollar stores for these CDs. Ours were full of these Steve Reeves Hercules movies and I bought 'em all - plus a ton of other greats, White Zombie, etc.
The actual myth of Hercules and Omphale isn't a story that Steve Reeves would have been likely to appear in. After he killed an innocent man in a fit of anger, the gods sentenced Hercules to be part of Omphale's court for a period of years -- time in which Omphale had absolute power over him, and during which he had to obey her. She amused herself by humiliating the strongman in a variety of ways. Her two favorites were taking the initiative in sex (a Greek man would be mortified to have a woman on top of him), and periodically dressing Hercules in women's clothes, and ordering him to sew and weave with her ladies. Hercules seethed and fumed inwardly, but, since his punishment had been decreed by the gods, there wasn't anything he could do about it. Shakespeare was apparently taken with this myth; in "Antony and Cleopatra", the two protagonists put on articles of each other's clothes at one point, since Hercules is Antony's patron god, and they have some fun with that fact.

This is a rip-off of what Cecil B.
