I know it's not a popular view, but I have always argued we should support anyone who sacrifices of themselves in service of others, especially those who died doing their jobs.

Frederick Trump (born, Freidrich Drumpf) emigrated from his native Germany to avoid taxes and national service in the army. He made a small fortune in a gold rush town as a brothel owner.
Frederick Trump (Donald's father) never saw active service in World War II. He received federal grants to build affordable homes for returning veterans, and was investigated for misappropriation of funds, most of which ended up in his own pocket. Although no charges were made, he skated so close to the edge of the law that new laws had be made to prevent anyone else doing what he did with the money in future.
Donald himself of course never served. The nearest he got was playing toy soldier in a military academy, where his neglectful parents sent him after violent and disruptive behaviour (at one point physically attacking his teacher for correcting him), and poor grades, at other schools. At the academy he was briefly promoted to dormitory officer, but later stripped of that title after excessive bullying of other students.
Trump was deferred from the draft five times during the Vietnam war. Four were for college, and one was for a claim of crippling bone spurs. However, he would later in life brag that, at the same time, he was headhunted by professional sports teams as an athletic prodigy. And by all accounts of his peers at the time, he did very well at competitive sports.
None of Trump's children have ever served either. Although there is one incident where Donald Junior declared he was going to join the army to get away from his domineering and abusive parents. In response, his father threatened he would be financially cut off and disinherited if he did.
In 2018, whilst on a Presidential visit to The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to commemorate the ending of World War I, according to several sources and witnesses, Trump called those who served and sacrificed their lives for their country, "Loser and suckers!"
At another memorial service at Arlington, Trump accompanied retired General John Kelly to the grave of Kelly's son, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010. According to Kelly, Trump turned to him and asked, bemused, "I don't get it. What's in it for them?"
For at least three generations not a single member of Trump's entire family have ever served their country in the military.
Not.
One.
In fact, they have gone out of their way to avoid service, and Trump himself has insulted and degraded those who serve and pay the ultimate price of patriotism.

Let’s review the record.
1. Trump massively escalated the war in Afghanistan by increasing the amount of airstrikes, which led to a 330 percent increase in civilian deaths.
2. In Yemen, Trump escalated both U.S. counterterrorism activities and support for the Saudi-led war against the Houthis.
3. There were 2,243 drone strikes in just the first two years of Trump’s presidency, compared with 1,878 in the entire eight years of the Obama administration.
4. Trump threatened to attack North Korea if it possessed the ability to strike the U.S.
5.Trump put the U.S. on a path to conflict with China with his trade war, and incited a failed coup in Venezuela.
Unlike Trump, Biden didn’t just talk about withdrawing from Afghanistan; he did it. Unlike Trump, he didn’t massively increase the number of U.S. drone strikes, he massively decreased them. Instead of escalating support for the Saudi war in Yemen, Biden reduced support for it. Biden never supported coups in Latin America, he's has only shown support for its democratically elected leaders.

With the national disillusionment in a sense of American purpose following the Viet Nam War about fifty years ago, as I returned from the war zone and found myself a veteran, I watched American public schools set aside the required courses of CIVICS & GOVERNMENT, and I was uncomfortable. Since then, I've observed growing ignorance of what political treasure we Americans had accumulated eat away at the foundations of our democracy. And here we are today with growing masses of us Americans assuming that democracy is whatever we want it to be. And, if it isn't, then some demand its replacement. The time is long past to reintroduce young Americans to a curriculum of Civics & Government if, ..... our democracy survives. So, join with me and stand up for and VOTE for it in just over five months.
I'm 72 years old and my sister and I were talking on the phone literally yesterday about this very issue of the need to bring back civics and government, or social studies as it was also known back in the day. I remember my 5th grade civics class being one of the most difficult ones I ever had.

I watched the PBS Memorial Days presentation. I was moved by the readings of the war stories. I was ecstatic to hear of these heroes, even though most had fallen.
Then I remembered how dt had called these fallen and severely wounded heroes, he called them “LOSERS!” I was shocked just from how proud I felt of those heroes and then being reminded about “Keep those (disabled) soldiers away from me. People don’t want to see that!”

Gave 5 years of my life serving my country. To say I'm disheartened at the current state of our country, is the most understated thing I've ever said or felt. It's truly saddening. I don't see that much difference between "patriotism" and 'nationalism". In both cases it is pride about something that you had nothing to do with, so it's nothing to be proud about. Where and when you are born is entirely a matter of coincidence.

Other than that, I try to be a decent human being who helps his friends and neighbours where he can. But that has nothing to do with the nation I happen to have been born in. If I am a "patriot", I am a patriot of this entire planet.

We went to the Veterans cemetery here in San Antonio today. There were so many families there to thank our fallen men and women. It was such a a site to see, cars lined up to get in, military walking around in their proud uniforms. San Antonio is a huge military city and we are so proud of each and everyone of of them. The media plays a huge role in people's attitudes toward events. And these attitudes have resulted in the disregard for democracy we are seeing.
What the media (both left and right) is basically saying of late is: "Trump is important" - as a result of all the coverage of every kind about him.

Thank you, Mr. Meacham. I will never understand how anyone can follow Trump. However, from some interviews I've seen, perhaps some of his fans simply have unrealistic expectations.
