Just want to note for anyone studying for board exams...Lipase is actually more specific in evaluating for pancreatitis than Amylase! They will ask this question!
Cannot believe how good and how clear these videos are, after finding the podcasts earlier today. Absolutely fascinating and make learning easy. This from someone who has been in hospital for the last week with acute pancreatitis. These videos help fill gaps in understanding, noting that the treating doctors have limited time. Very reassuring indeed. You can probably tell I'm impressed. Thanks very much Tom.
it's literally from zero to finals this video has everything we need to have an approach to pancreatitis.thank you for this amazing work!
My favourite medicine channel. The best
Thanks Dr. I'm an ANP and lm learning so much from your videos and notes.
Thanks for this! My mother-in-law developed acute pancreatitis a couple of years ago. Her doctors kept trying to tell her it was because of all the alcohol she drinks, even though she said she hadn't had any in over 20 years
What happened? Is she ok?
@@juantelle1 She's okay. Every now and then she has problems with food causing pain, but she can eat some of the things she enjoys most days
Thank you so much for those videos! I really appreciate it! I'm a med student. Your videos make it a lot easier to study!!! Thanks!!!
I feel the same 😂
Thank you Dr. Great educational video. Can you live without one.
Very nice work tom, keep it up the good work, hatt's off to ur work.
Thanks, will do!
I was following your page for podcasts, and they were very valuable notes,
please add some senarios at the end of videos or in seperate videos so they help in exam questions
Thank you so much for all the hard work and keeping them free🙏.
This is a great suggestion. There is a testing section to the website that you could use for this purpose!
Thank you for a detailed video
very organized and usefully video !!! thank youu
Thanks, surgery we are on standby waiting
Thanks for the wonderful explanation
Super helpful. Thank you
Nice work , 👏 really good video
Thanks... from India 🇮🇳 💕🙏🏻
Your video is amazing:") thanks a lot
Good knowledge, thank you
Thank you for this amazing effort
Thank you for sharing
Tom, you are my idol man
Excellent explanation.thank you sir
Thanks I catched more knowledge
Good summary though the nil by mouth is disputed. Recent studies show better outcomes if enteral feeding is resumed as soon as possible.
I have been thru some painful things or thought i had, let me tell you a inflamed pancretitis was hell on this earth. To what degree mine was i dont know i do know i could not have taken any more suffering. It felt like my insides were being microwaved i was also hot temp wise, finding cool air was hard to come by in ER. the thing that was scary i couldnt see where pain meds would have helped this kind of dis comfort after some tlc from docs it subsided, god dont let this happen to you.
Just had a bout last week of acute. It was torture beyond belief. I'll never drink a drop of alcohol again. It really is a horrible consequence of drinking but one that I needed to stop the excessive drinking. My description is: feels like being punched in the stomach everytime I breathed.
Hi I’m interested in medicine but not connected to it at all in 2012 acute pancreatitis nearly killed me and I have been ten years sober wishes general saved my life greetings from Scotland thanks 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 I was in the hospital for eighteen days and lost two and a half stone in that time after that I went back to the gym when I got enough strength back I don’t look nothing like I did say fifteen years ago I’ve never smoked
Love u Tom.....many herats
thank u! i subscribed and liked
Spent 4 days in the ER with this awful pain! Worst experience of my life. Haven’t had a drink since.
good job
There's no mention of Lipase?
Lipase is a far better blood test to diagnose pancreatitis...
you are right!
Is a blood test ??
Not necessarily. I've been having a flare up before and my lipase came back as only slightly elevated... went for an ultrasound and yep, an acute flare.
@@bazza9760 ultrasound can be helpful ?
@@nidhisindhwani9871if the cause is a Gall stone maybe?
Thank you.
Epidemiology: 80% of causes of chronic pancreatitis are due to alcohol, the remaining 20% are typically idiopathic.
And yes, everybody remembers the 'scorpion sting' paha!
I had this 5 days ago and went to surgery. While all the systems are correct I still can't for the life of me figure out why I got it. I never drink alcohol, simply because I don't like the taste. I am not on drugs, and the ones prescribed by my doctor should have nothing to do with that side. It was mostly livers. I do blood tests every year just to make sure I have all the stuff I need. And then bam! The pain was there, they took a scan and found my pancreas was in an abces and close to bursting open. Which it did when I went under apparently. I don't real want to take precautions in the future on what to eat because I love food and at a healthy weight. But the pain is something you will never feel even the same again even after birthing. Anyhow I'm told to stay for 5 days longer because the first antibiotic does not work for me. So need to start another.
Do you smoke or have gallstones?
@@sphenoidjjj no i don't smoke and they checked if i had galstones first before they figured out i had pancreatitis. I was in the hospital for two weeks and while i may never know what the cause was, at least our medicine has come a long way you be treated. Still would love to Know how, but it may very Well be just bad luck
Did the doctors say which type of pancreatitis you have?
@@Darkening14 not sure anymore. I remember when i Came out of the scan they saw a big abces. But apperantly when i was under it bursted. Im sure it had a name but it was a big word and only can remember the pancreatis one.
@LifeWithAutism I dont know if this is true, but I feel I got the same thing just I found out about thos much earlier. I am 18 and felt the pain mainly in my back. When to see doctor they told me some tube is inflamed and building up. Which might have happened to you when it got too swelled up. I never drank or smoked as well. We just unlucky they say.
Awesome ! I have every single condition you explain. ISTR that is normal xD
Regarding 🦂 sting wt u said is 💯 correct
Thanks so much for this Video! One Question: In Europe, Lipase is used as the specific marker for Pancreatitis since Amylase can also indicate an inflammation of salivatory glands. However Lipase is not mentioned in your video. Could you maybe explain? Thanks!
Respect for you🎉🎉🎉
This happened to me when I was given Codeine which turns out to be such a rare reaction that most doctors are unaware.
I've taken Codeine multiple times and the result was the same each time.
Codeine, steroids and ACE-inhibitors do this to me. I am 80 years old and have had pancreatitis off and on all my life. Been to some of the best doctors in the USA. Fortunately and take enzymes.
They just gave me codeine and Tylenol mix to fight the pain of pancreatist
@@philipdennis5020same, they gave me dilaudid. Never heard of codeine induced pancreatitis.. 🧐
Could be sphincter of oddi dysfunction, similar to gallbladder attack , digestive juices back up and sphincter spasms and causes pain, morphine and norco can cause them too
I have familial hypertryglyceridemia and I’ve had pancreatitis three times because of it
How long would someone have a root cause to have it be linked to pancreatitis? for example, if someone had a scorpion sting...does it matter how long ago? if someone had the mumps, would it be as a child or only as an adult? is there a connection between event cause and then issue ie. pancreatitis?
Can you get pancreatic pains if you don’t have a gallbladder?
Isn't it (lipase) not amylase
after two trips to the hospital for alcohol induced acute pancreatitis after two decades of hard drinking, i have given up booze forever. 7 months sober! now I smoke weed
Does smoking weed flare anything up or cause you pain? I'm in the hospital rn for the same thing, drinking too much
@@giokoolinxdkoolingangxd1590 No harmful effects to my pancreas at all. Been smoking since April. A lot, too. Nothing quite like an alcohol buzz, but it's better than nothing. Helps with anxiety a lot, but I'm much less talkative than when I drank. I do miss that.
@@hineighbor Good to hear you quit while still ahead healthwise. I think I waited too long to quit. Constant pain for a year now.
I'm on my 2nd trip....I'm ready to quit booze
It's better you stop all of them, weed may still take you to the hospital for lungs disease
Love you 💞
Thanks 🥹🥹🥹
Nice video
Thank you for sharing
Thanks!
9:02 3-7 days like you said, or 3-5 like written?
oooops! 3-7 is more accurate
My lipase is high but my ultrasound is fine. So not sure whats happening here? I get pain under left side rib and right side rib like sudden sharp pains.
Is there any other causes that can raise lipase levels other than pancreatitis?
Thanks.
I do too.. But its not really a pain its like a soreness. Have you found out any other information ? Thank you. What was your number on Lipase? Mine was 81.
@acethemcacethemc1491 hello,
I haven't found out much more info but my lipase was 95 and then went down to 83.
Those numbers are relatively normal. Baseline is around 70. Once you start getting around 400 shit get real. My lipase and amylase enzymes hit 17,000. Lay off any fatty foods, zero booze, and get some genetic testing to make sure it’s not related to something worse. Turns out I had a genetic mutation that caused this at 17 years old for me. I drank until I was 33. I’m 36. Good luck fellas!! Hope I get another decade here.
My best friend died due pancreas burst
I Don't know he died due mistreatment or not but still feeling that something is missing
For none drinkers could it occurs owing to an infection?
Why cullen sign and turner sign occurs in pancreatitis
Hi doctor can you explain medicine nephrology Easy ways Such this video plz 🙏🏽
Thanks for the suggestion. I will add it to the long list.
are perfumes a cause of pancreatic dysfunction ?
What about hereditary causes?
The video has an error. Lipase is more specific than amylase for acute pancreatitis.
What is the normal range?
Ive been having a dull pain under my left rib for over 1 year now, ive quit alcohol (wasnt a big drinker) and fried foods, Ive had 4 ultrasounds but nothing there.
COVID jab? Myocarditis.
I also get this pain. My lipase is high but my ultrasound was fine. Not sure what's going on.
@@markbrown8268 ive had 2 phizer jabs unfortunately 😔
You have represented this happens with alcohol. But my brother is vegan and no smoke no drink. He got this, what is cause of that?. He had gall stones
HI from San diego
Hello there!
The most painful surge for relief 😮💨🤕 ouch
I was diagnosed acute pancreatitis. I don't drink, I don't have a gallbladder. Not sure why it flared up. Only thing I was told is to go on a liquid diet for a 12-24 hours, then bland foods. If I start hurting again, either see my doctor or the ER. I would like to know why it happened. Don't think the video answer the cause for me 😢
Sorry to hear you're going through that. I hope you heal and never have future pancreas issues 🙏
Same for my daughter. She’s on the way to the ER right now. We have no ideas why this keeps happening but we’re praying for healing.
Have you had any antibiotics? I have no gallbladder either. I know that sounds weird however I don’t smoke my alcohol intake is lit like once every five months. So when I got Covid I had antibiotics then I had a double dose because I had Covid earlier….So I have acute pancreatitis I have had Covid first a uti and the pancreatitis. Throwing up November 2nd then saw my doc. On the 11th she scripted me blood work when I look at the states over two it has gotten better I feel better. I didn’t think I had pancreatitis cause I tried to think maybe I am hunger so I will shove this slice of pizza. 1/2 later the vomiting began and it didn’t stop but I went to the ER dehydrated….and to find out I have acute pancreatitis on top of a UTI. I have to follow a strict diet blandBRAT…. Long story sorry you feel like sick you aren’t alone. It sucks…. Feel better… it is normally good that does you in
Then why it occurs while patient never drinks alcohol in his or her life time?
Happened to me at just 18
So 18 years old just got autoimmune pancreatitis having not drinking or smoking ever. They say I'm just unlucky. Anyone else seen something like this for young age?
Ouch. I wonder if vaccines have anything to do with it.
I had it when I was 21. . 12 years later I've had zero problems so I wouldn't worry about it
Still remember the acute pancreatitis mnemonic from med school: BAD $HIT
Biliary disease
Alcohol
Drugs
Scorpion sting, Sepsis
Hypertriglycerides
Idiopathic
Trauma

Hello MF"s!!! Good luck to anyone taking their exams next week!
Thanks sir for sharing great knowledge. My daughter (15) is suffering from Acute Pancreatitis since 17 months. Admitted several times in Hospital. After severe attack, pain and omitting she fall ill and recover after 5/6 days fully. But after 30/35 days, it repeats. Have any medical suggestion, please.
A carnivore diet cured my pancreatitis.
Hello I'm a 18 year old boy who is going through this now. I've been diagnosed with autoimmune pancreatitis that can relapse at time maybe this is something to suggest to the doctors.
@@Darkening14 Do not suggest this to your doctors. They will say no. Just try it on your own. It cured mine within one week, and it has not come back in almost 3 months.
You didn't mention the worst of possible complications. Death.
Be vigilant with your health.
Not even a doctor would tell you that personally.
Come on, man!
My mom died from this by alcohol consumption
Lipase not Amilase
❤
We all got to go one way or another 😂
Hi from Pakistan 😍
Hi!
And then you have asymptomatic pancreatitis, going through that right now-immunity problems?!
Sir can you see my report
The carnivore diet cured my acute pancreatitis.
I've been eating carnivore for a while and taking TUDCA for my gallbladder and now I think I'm having a pancreatitis flareup
If you never drink alcohol and are already very healthy. You will remain very healthy.
What
I have got a tumor of 1cm in pancreas tail
