Yes, the arpeggios of QR made me fall in love with their music. Absolutely LOVED this band up until Chris walked away. I was so fortunate to get to see them during their Empire Tour, in which they performed Operation Mindcrime in its entirety! The greatest concert of my lifetime!

    • @aschule5684

I agree and believe in all the shows I've been to the "EMPIRE" show will forever be my number 1
Everything about it was magic and I've never enjoyed a concert more despite almost getting into a fight with a drunk Suicidal Tendencies fan before they played. The MINDCRIME part just pushed it over the top "FANTASTIC" did Geoff Tate do the jumping off the stage and disappearing thing at the end of the show when you saw them? Very dramatic ending to an incredible night of music!!

"The Mission" is one of Queensryche's best tracks. The solo is brilliant. I feel like Dream Theater really "borrowed" a lot from this song when composing "Pull Me Under"

    • @dragongamer4753
      @dragongamer4753 2 года назад +1

Yeah. The 12 string intro on that song got me hooked on 12 strings. Although i dont really feel like pull me under is a rip off of it. I like them both but they have such radically different compositions that outside of the solo being kind of similar they really aren't alike.

I like the production on Rage For Order too, that drum sound is so raw and epic. Stands out for being really acoustic and natural, in an era when a lot of albums were using drum samples on Rock and Metal but never mentioning this in the credits, for fear of damaging the bands image.

    One more short comment.
I love how QR marries the music to the lyrics! The music supports the lyrical idea and enhances it.
In THE MISSION I loved how the music BELIED the lyrics when Geoff sings:. My mission saved the world, and I stood proud...". During that part Nikki is trying to convince himself that what he's doing is still a good thing, but he's starting to doubt it. The WORDS are expressing triumph and pride, but the music on that part sounds remorseful and anguished. Whether by design or subconsciously, it's BRILLIANT!

NM 156! Not everyone's favorite probably because of the off sounding twin sounding guitar tone. That's my pick from out of the Normal favorites like queen of the ryche... seen them from infancy on the 1st album when they were handing out actual newspaper type programs AND I stil have my original Warning shirt when they opened for Kiss... yea I'm that old... 😅

That’s 90’s Queensryche: I love it, songwriting got even more varied and mature, and production is raw 90’s sound probably influenced by the grunge scene in Seattle. It just speaks to my since I grew up with 90’s music, so that and Empire are my all time favourites. Mindcrime is a close second.

What’s interesting is, like yourself, I was introduced to Queensryche with Operation Mindcrime. There just is no way of describing the first time I heard the intro to Eyes of a Stranger. The way they use arpeggiated chords with distortion. For me, they were the first band that made distortion beautiful.
    My top 5:
    Walk in the Shadows
    Revolution Calling
    The Mission
    Della Brown

Loved this. Grew up when Queensryche was starting out. First hearing the EP, as you said, it sounded like Seattle's own Iron Maiden. Seeing them live (opening for Kiss on the Warning tour), I couldn't believe two guitar players could play harmonized guitar riffs/solos so well. On Walk in the Shadows, I love the little harmonized parts during the verse - after each vocal. The intervals they came up with were nuts.

Favorite guitar moment: The trade-off solos in "Walk In The Shadows", favorite song (it's actually 4 in a row... and I think they should be played together every single time hahaha) "I Don't Believe In Love / Waiting For 22 / My Empty Room / Eyes Of A Stranger"........... this band still gets my blood pumping after all of these years. I love them (minus the large group of bad albums they released). I just saw them 2 weeks ago and they played a near dream setlist. Was an incredible show - even with the absence of DeGarmo and Rockenfield. Todd really brings his A game vocally.

No doubt Queensryche had a huge influence in European Metal from the 90's on, along with Savatage and King Diamond. In saying that, America did not go that road..instead going to punk, alt rock, folk rock and of course Pantera style. A Mistake (debateable on pantera, dime shredded but melodies left the building) that was deliberately pushed by corperate media and certainly caused mass fallout as masses left the train for other genres (country/hiphop). Europe however progressed forward with that Queensryche/Savatage/Dream Theater/King Diamond/Helloween style. I will take that over grunge, emo, screamo and cookiemonster metal any day of the week. lol. coooookkkiiiee caaavemen

I never realized Queensryche was Prog Metal. I grew up here in the Seattle area and in the era as well though I never saw them live. Back in the '80s we just considered them to be a heavy metal band and we didn't have as many sub-genre titles yet. I especially loved Empire though I was aware of them from the Operation Mindcrime days.

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  8 дней назад

I think prog metal is one of those retrospective terms used TBH - once you had every other band being "heavy metal" you needed sub-genres like thrash/speed/power/prog.

I had never heard of Queensryche until a bass player friend took me to a show right as Operation Mindcrime was released. It was a mid-sized club show, only partly full, and they were absolutely phenomenal - one of the best 3 shows I've ever seen. I knew none of their songs, but from about 30 seconds into the set I was completely dumbstruck - didn't move an inch. When they finally let up, I realized I was holding the same beer that I bought when we came in, still full and warm. Thinking about their sound and energy still gives me chills - they were THAT good. The next day I started learning their material.....

They've been a massive influence on me. Both as a writer and guitarist, and as a singer. Eyes of a Stranger is probably my favorite or one of them. Geoff's voice is so unique to me in his style, tone and accent. I can hit the notes, but that uniqueness of his voice is something that can't be duplicated. When I was younger and did covers, I always tried to get my voice as much like the singers as possible. That's easier with some, as a singer has his own natural voice that you just can't stop from being there. Which is why now, if I were to do a cover, I would do my own version of it. I never considered them progessive as much as others though since they stay in 4/4 so much. I have always seen them as Cinematic Hard Rock. And original in their way.

QR is one of the best bands in history, I believe. I've seen them in concert many times, and every show is incredible. It's sad they broke up, I'll never understand the pettiness of fabulously successful musical bands. Most bands would feel success if they had 1 good album. It's like a great movie waiting for all the bits to turn up and before you know it it's over...such a ride. I don't know the truth of this but I was in a band while at university, and we got to know the local PA guys, and they always used "Empire" as the starting point to EQ everything...the claim being it was that well produced. Like I said, don't know if it's true but it was always a great time hearing that album through a 40,000 watt PA system in one of the university venues👍

Such an awesome band! It's sad that we'll never get to experience the classic Queensryche again, but I think it's great that the band, in it's current form, is releasing enjoyable music again after all those miserable years at the tail end of the Tate era. Maybe they should have pulled the plug on Queensryche right after the split with Geoff - or they could have carried on as Rising West - but I've always tried to be positive about the new Queensryche, and so far I think it's worked out pretty well, even though it clearly sounds and feels a bit different now. I do wish we would see mr Rockenfield back again, but realistically that's probably never going to happen.

@@LeonTodd Yes, Todd sure brought back the fire that had been missing from the vocals for over a decade. Geoff had just stopped caring, and it showed. In all fairness I think Geoff has improved since then. He seems to treat the classic Queensryche material with a bit more respect while performing with his new band. He might not hit all the high notes (or even try to), but at least he seems to take it seriously again.

One of my favorite songs is "Best I Can" off Empire. I remember the first time I heard "Queen of the Reich" , I had never heard anyone sing like that. For Geoff Tate vocal " Someone Else " with just piano is one of my favorites.

The EP will always have a special place for me. I remember picking it up on tape in a Seattle record store when it first came out because I liked the album art and the band name. (Seriously, that's kinda how you had to shop for metal bands in the 80s!)

I just want to say thanks for this great video, you really put your heart and soul into it.100% agreed on everything you said-Queensryche was one of the most agile band of their time.Just one more thing-"Promised land' is also very convincing record(yet so dark) and different than their previous work, but I like it just as much maybe even more.'Promised land" and 'Hear now in the new frontier' came at point in time when musical landscape was radically changing and it was not easy for bands of heavy orientation.

I still have the first print of Empire Album Vinyl, I bought without knowing anything about the band, just out of the reviews of the, by then, printed rock magazines. It blew my mind and while many people still think OM is their peak, for me it is Empire. it was DeGarmo''s album,, it is a piece of art in itself and that jet City Woman track is indeed my favourite, and its solo, one of my favourite solos of all time with such an amazing musicality.

I think the happiest I've ever seen an audience was when Geoff's solo band played *that* riff from The Needle Lies. 🤯🤘

Queensrÿche is another of my top 5 favorite bands. I am a fan since "Rage for Order" All albums including "Promised Land" are amazing; after that they lost their greatness, IMHO.

  • @carsandhealthtoddrosenzwei2661

Exactly what you said... that's how I discovered Queensrÿche as well. My Favorite band... all time.

Amen! Queensryche are amazing. I saw them open for Iron Maiden in NYC at Radio City, Chris DeGarmo back pedalling across the stage while playing the solo to “The Lady Wore Black”. And I saw them open for Metallica during the Mindcrime era.

Great video. "The Mission" is truly deserving of the overused word epic. For free hypnosis, watch the string ball that is dangling and spinning under the Hamer head stock. PS "I don't believe in love" but do in those inimitable clean tones.

Way cool HAMER USA Californian (Elite or Custom?)!!! Boomerangs baby! Dig Queensryche since before they were Queensryche. Good to see a pro playing the same methods I have used as an old hairless hesher and hack. BTW I am "hamernut" on the evilBay.

Favorite Queensryche song??? That's impossible. First song I ever heard was Lady Wore Black, which I love. But Queen of the Reich is there and Take Hold of the Flame. Really can't pin down a single song. Awesome catalog.

Empire was too MTV-friendly imo, it was not bad, but it wasn't great, like previous albums. Often bands have several great albums, then they get a breakthrough and the next album is much weaker and they never recover from it. Fame and money ruin the best of bands.

Rage for Order made me a fan. Love all the DeGarmo age music. Their stuff without Chris is good, but to me is missing something. Miss Scott in their newer stuff. Michael and Eddie still kick it. Geoff was amazing, Todd does a good job.

My favorite tracks are Screaming in Digital, Resistance and Spreading the Disease. FWIW, Queensryche almost singlehandedly made the BBE Sonic Maximizer standard equipment for guitar racks back in the 80's. It's a hallmark of their guitar sounds.
