- FINALLY we have arrived at Ghost Protocol! The Fast Five of the Mission Impossible franchise. This movie was supposed to hand the reigns of Ethan Hunt's adventures to Jeremy Reiner but it ended up jumpstarting Tom Cruise as one of the definitive action heroes of our time.

"Worldwide destruction is necessary"
Everyone: No!
Pat: I get it.
He's a cool guy.
Pain: That's what I'm saying!
Benji is totally *totally* an awesome character. Simon Pegg is too cool.
Thank god Ricky Gervais dropped out of MI:III.
@@TomVCunninghamRicky Gervais as Benji?? Oh hell nah 😂
@@mclovin8435that's what I'm saying! Franchise dodged a bullet.
Favorite part of this movie is that none of the equipment is convenient or works correctly in the movie
They struck gold hiring him, can't imagine the franchise without him now
The entire Dubai sequence is why Ghost Protocol is my favorite M:I movie.
"NO SHIT!"
Tom Cruise gets a ton of credit for this, and deservedly so, but Brad Bird doesn't get enough. Brad Bird has an absolutely incredible eye for action. Which he proved with The Incredibles and its sequel. This was his first live action movie and he brought all of his talent to it. He made the devices break down and force it to be the team working. He went all in on Tom doing the stunts for real. Brad Bird started what MI became.
And they absolutely pulled windows off the Burj and filmed it all for real with helicopter camera ships and crane cams extending out of windows, winches and rigging etc.
He did but no one will praise him for it and that's because of his own transgressions to put it mildly.
True, the series really picked up from this movie...But Chris Mcquarrie perfected it👍
I like how they were asking how Ethan could be handled or outrunned by the old russian guy while in reality the old guy was only two years older than Tom Cruise at the time
Are you fucking serious? Wow
Sure, but the scientist hasn't had secret agent training and Ethan Hunt is really, really good at running.
@@RectPropagation he was in swedish special forces so yes he did
@@lucasfavre1282 I totally forgot this! I haven't watched the movie in ages. Thank you, that makes much more sense now.
"...was only 2 y.o. older than Tom Cruise at the time" sounds so funny 😂 how many years he is older than Tom now? 😅
Who would've thought that the film that was intended to pass the torch from Tom Cruise to Jeremy Renner ended up not only reigniting the franchise but solidifying Cruise's status for the decade and beyond.
Very happy it didn't work out, ns to Jeremy but I couldn't imagine him taking over the role, unlike with James Bond it just wouldn't be the same
@@Shyknit Renner was also supposed to take over the Bourne franchise.
@@aaronmoen7402 again another case I'm happy it didn't happen lol, interesting he's in second place for such big roles tho
Came out near Christmas 2011.
Major upgrade for the franchise.
One of my favorite sequels.
Saw it in IMAX, 5 days before it's initial release.
Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratoutoulle and The Iron Giant) did amazingly well with his first live-action film.
From part 4 onward, they utilize IMAX technology for core visual scenes in these sequels.
This one definitely proved that Cruise is one of the best actors to ever do action period.
The cast (IMF, villains) was great.
Jeremy Renner was super busy between M-I, the MCU and the Bourne franchise.
Not too many 4th installments are this good.
From here on out, the missions stay fully connected (thanks to J.J. Abrams as producer).
The sheer number of times this movie makes you go "Shit! Oh shit oh shit oh shit" is proof it's (at least one of) the best MI installment(s).
This and Fallout are my favourite. Maybe Fallout is a better movie but like Suraj said, this was the Fast Five or turning point of the franchise, so it does feel special. And the whole Dubai sequence (climbing the tower, the tense meetings, the dust storm) is still their most memorable moment
And this is where the mission impossible series defiantly hit its stride and starting doing cool stunts
defintly hit its stride but started doing cool stunts?
Rogue nation is my personal favorite but it really just gets better from here
Yeah man absolutely
Favorite part of this movie is that none of the equipment is convenient or works correctly in the movie
Ghost Protocol is still my favorite M:I entry to date 🙌🏻
It's definitely in my top 3. Just because after MI 3 is when it gets as good as it is today.
His fateful meeting with his wife in Fallout was even more gut-wrenching.
"How is he not dead?"
"Scientology"
😭
Tom cruise is an amazing actor, he is known for being an action star but underneath that all is an emotionally intelligent actor, especially in movies like Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men, Born on the Fourth of July, and Collateral. You should definitely watch those because his performances in them is amazing.
It's why he can sell the moments in the middle of the action as mattering. It's not just action there's story too.
Any time he doesn't have to do romance he does great.
38:16 Actors doing their own stunts is more commonplace in Hong Kong movies, especially back in the 20th century: Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Yuen Biao, etc... Even non-action stars such as Maggie Cheung have been injured doing stunts. The main difference w/ Hollywood is mandatory insurance policies. Hence, safety is still the #1 priority in the Mission Impossible series, making injuries much less common than say the Police Story franchise. Jackie has a permanent hole in his skull while Michelle was once in traction for a month. But even during the silent era, actors such as Buster Keaton were also doing their own stunts.
The fact that this was filmed over a year ago and is just dropping now is fucking with me rn, suraj's beard still in the works lmao
Mission Impossible is such an interesting series. The first one was an attempt to reboot the tv series as a 90's blockbuster, while the second film leaned heavy into the nu-metal, edginess of the 2000's. When Abrams came on board with the third film it grounded the series with more of a gritty, real-world feel. But this film was the resurgence of the series, pointing it in a new, continuity-driven direction. But with the fifth film onwards, Christopher MaQuarrie came on board as this series' Justin Lin (director of six Fast & Furious films).
This is by far my favourite Mission: Impossible movie. Everything just works, and the cast is great, it's just the perfect storm.
I wish Paula had stuck around for future movies; I really liked her character.
I think this one is still my favorite.
Tom Cruise is one fine actor. You guys need to watch his performances in Born on The Fourth Of July & Magnolia. Oscar worthy.
16:54 In IMAX this scene was the most insane thing I've ever seen in a cinema. Everyone was getting giddy in their seats from the heights 🤮
i love this ends with ethan heading to a rap battle
8 Mile style
This is by far the best reaction I’ve seen to this movie. 😂😂
There is a picture of Tom Cruise sitting on top of that building with no wires barefoot
"Again, with this shit!" -Rana. Getting disavowed. LOL
Tom Cruise is three time Oscar nominated and also the biggest moviestar of all time
4 times
I love a LOT about this film, but one of the major things that keeps it from being better than Rogue Nation or M:I-3 for me, is it’s stale villain and drawn out finale. A real casting headscratcher.
That and it’s less than stellar cinematography, the lack of Luther, plus the lingering suspicion that they weren’t sure another MI film would be a hit with an aging Tom Cruise and thus were prepping Jeremy Renner to possibly take over the franchise. It comes across as a less confident film, but still a big triumph for director Brad Bird’s first live action outing.
Overall, I’d say it’s my fourth favorite of the franchise and a really fun time. That tower scene still makes me sweat buckets.
The Burj Khalifa climbing scene ALWAYS gives me secondhand vertigo and anxiety. It's such a great sequence, but I HATE it. XDDDD
a total blind watch experience of this movie is priceless for an action movie lover.
Michael Nyqvist from John Wick is Cobalt in this
Funny how you called Hendricks just an 'Old Guy'. Michael Nyqvist (RIP by the way) was only 20 Months older than Cruise. :D
That Burj Khalifa scene, I CANNOT!!!
“One of the the stunts that Tom Cruise actually did”...I’m sorry wdym “one of”😂
That mission at the end is the group he goes after in the next one. Rogue Nation.
"That's impossible as it gets".. wait till the next one
This is just precursor to what is to come in Rogue Nation and in Fallout, definitely the greatest MI film of all time and one of the best action movies of all time.
Brad Bird also directed “The Iron Giant.”
no way you liked the third one better, never seen anyone think that, after fallout this is the best one for me
“That’s about as impossible as it gets”
Bro, you have no idea.
They considered having Jeremy take over the series if Tom chose to leave after this
whoaaaa they all pronounced nuclear correctly, holy moly what a rarity 🥳🥳🥳
Damn Renner fucked up the streak 😅
11:33 Lol not only is that Juntao but thats also Carmine Falcone
A welcome restart to the "Mission Impossible" movie series.
Absolutely man. Plus it honours the past.
The third one was the restart
Bring on "Rogue Nation"! Still my favourite in the franchise.
Agree about that 😊
The best part was cut out: Next time I get to seduce the rich guy! - William Brandt.
Love Jeremy Renner ❤
Villain was effective and realistic. Saying that there was no time dedicated to him, villain was the Ghost. There shouldn't be too much info about him. You see how he looks like - you don't need more.
Amd he literally spells out his motivation.
This is honestly my favourite one of all the films. Brad Bird is the GOAT
Absolutely love this movie. Also I sleep well at night knowing that if I run out of variations of "Bro" I can always say "What up Ghost Bro-tocol" 🥴🤣
Brad Bird also directed The Iron Giant
Freaking love that sawyer is in this movie! ❤
Dude! Brad Bird directed The Iron Giant, The Incredibles 1+2 and Tomorrowland 😂😂
Ghost Protocol was Brad Bird's first film to direct that is not animated. He previously directed animated films like The Incredibles and Ratatouille.
Good thing Ethan has a photographic memory - what good is flashing 20 blueprints of buildings in 5 seconds and then burning up? Like - can I get some copies of those?
31:10 😂😂😂😂😂 yeah those Anil Kapoor scenes were done for comic relief.
You might cover it in the full-length, but when Ethan leaves to reconnect with Bogdan, right after Brandt explains the backstory about what happened with Ethan, Ethan goes to a dock and meets a tall guy on a boat who makes him put on a shroud in order to be taken to Bogdan and his contact. That tall blonde guy is from the first Mission: Impossible movie, where he was one of Max's goons, who Ethan asks for a light with the pack of Dunhill.
Yeah!! I lovedddd that callback!
when I saw that in theater I really thought we were gonna get Max again, I was a little disappointed.
Being Ethan Hunt’s boss is literally the worst job in the world 😬
I'm glad that Ghost Protocol was an attempt of really making the TEAM the focus of the movie versus making it centrally evolve around Ethan and/or the villain. However, I do agree that Hendricks/Cobalt sticks out like a sore thumb when it comes to being a good villain/antagonist in this movie.
Brad Bird was a director on the Simpsons and he directed the iron giant
We need the last samurai reaction with the full couch. It would be so good ❤
That would be dope
Out of all the Mission Impossible that I’ve seen expect for the new one I haven’t seen that one yet but Ghost Protocol is my favorite Mission Impossible movie
I have not seen the new one too. But I'm looking forward to seeing it.
@@joeldean2706 same
Okay, I have to ask:
At the 19:00 mark, when Ethan is hanging out the window of the Burj Khalifa, and the other members of the team are holding him by his leg, and Seraj (sp?) says "That pant leg better be stitched to perfection"...
Would that be a reference to The Hudsucker Proxy?
Good catch lol
Best villain - 3 and 6
Best story - 3 and 6
Best suspense - 5
Best team up - 5 and 7
Best stunt - all except 2nd
That IS actually how they launch nukes from submarines. Its pretty scary.
That scene in the theaters. You talking bout palms sweaty. Sheeh!
Suraj, there are still four films left.
"Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Fallout, Dead Reckoning Part One, and Dead Reckoning Part Two".
Brad Bird also directed The Iron Giant and Ratatouille before this came out. Loving the reactions guys!
The man is incredibly talented. I wish they'd let him make his 1906 film.
Brad Bird also directed The Iron Giant!
You could absolutely survive the car dropping off.
Still the best movie in the MI franchise. We'll see how Dead Reckoning, Part 2 goes.
This is the only M:I movie I saw in theatres.
How didn't Suraj recognize Mikal Nyquist? aka the dad from the first John Wick?
So MI7: Dead Reckoning Part 1 has already come out, Part 2 comes out next year
Half-life was the word you were looking for, Mickey
So long as Jeddah Tower's not yet reached the height of the Burj, the Khalifa remains the tallest in the world.
i would love it if, when tom cruise finally quits doing his own stunts. They just for kicks , of for a april fools or something, pick the tallest buff stuntactor to replace him for stunts xD
12:41 The message exploded. Lol
Why in first place Chris knew how to undo the handcuffs with clip
the Incredibles and The Iron Giant
Suraj, where'd you get that prescription bottle coffee mug??? i need that!!
i agree this is my favorite because i love the dubai skyscraper scene and yes i fast 5 is my favorite also even though i do like the others aswell
It has become accepted that Tom Cruise would probably die while filming one of these movies.
Others also do their own stunts, but thats not on the Tom Cruise level. Thats on 1000x times another level.
Mission Impossible: * recreates intro from the original series *
Suraj: "This is like one of my Japanese animes!!"
This was my first mission impossible way back when, and I keep away now
4, 5 and 6 are my favorites. Haven't seen 7 yet
Oh man 7 was crazy. The cold open was intense.
@TheNormies Tom Cruise did shatter his ankle while chasing Henry Cavill jumping building to building in Mission Impossible Fallout
I like that Brandt's not "undercover" as an analyst. He legit feels like he's responsible for the death of this guy's wife. He's not "secretly" an agent, he is just *done* being an agent because he got Ethan Hunt's wife killed.
Not only was he not responsible, the entire "dead wife" storyline was damn near created to potentially absolve (any IMF agent that isn't Hunt) of that failure, discreetly. Cleanly. That's not on Brandt for letting it happen, it's on Hunt for killing six people in cold blood (allegedly) over it. The movie could've done a better job explaining it, because that's theorizing a contingency for a contingency. And even then, there's an argument to be made that ALL OF THAT was a cover story to get Ethan into Rankov prison to befriend and extract Bogdan, the goofy Russian guy from the beginning.
Also, how long before somebody deep fakes Brittany Griner into the Russian prison escape sequence?
Paula Patton!❤❤❤
Déjà Vu and Two Guns!
45:21 Rana the best Normie confirmed
I’m about to change my name to “Bogdan” so Rana can hug me
33:18 Michael Nyqvist was only 2 years older than Tom Cruise.
11:47 Endgame theory 🤨
LOL deddd you guys are the best
Thta russian agent thats chasing them looks like Niko Bellic from GTA 4
Because he is
Rana is the first person I’ve heard (besides myself)to ever mention this: If Ethan Hunt is labeled a traitor/ mole in every movie why does he keep going back? Screw the IMF. They are some ungrateful wishy-washy employers!😂
It's brought up whenever anyone talks about the movies
Lol😂
Doing your own stunts is rare. I only know of Tom Cruise and jackie Chan and they both have had some significant injuries. Letitia wright injured her should/ribs and had an concussion doing a stunt for black panther 2, but it's very rare. Most have stunt doubles. Tom sets the bar
Dude Brad Bird directed fucking Iron Giant!!!
28:31 Anil Kapoor dressed as Sean Connery 007 🤣🤣🤣
Respect to Keane Reeves for his stunt work cmon
Hong Kong action stars.
