    Can you guys add metadata changes to the data charts? Like "Thumbnail Change" or "Title Change" or maybe "Changes Detected: Thumbnail, Tittle," etc. marked on the graphs in Analytics of a video, so that we can also see that is the reason why. Right now, we have to approximate when we changed the thumbnail or title.

      Have you ever seen a RUclips survey in your feed (Is this video a good match for you, click a smiley face)? These affect who (if anyone) is allowed to see the video. But they always ask about a video the viewer hasn't actually watched. So apparently the thumbnails/title are the most important factor right now (possibly only important factor), not content.
      Besides, if nobody can see your content, how could you possibly figure out if its good or not?
      I don't know if there is any real connection between quality and viewership (for me there's not, and based on a lot of really lazy/stolen content from big channels that rings true up the chain) - but what I know for sure is there is no connection whatsoever between *effort* and viewership.
      More effort or money spent on production does not mean more viewers. If anything a slower production schedule means far, far, far less viewers. This is because new videos get a small amount of automatic promotion for a couple days before getting killed. A lot of new videos means a lot more automatic promotion.
      More effort means you can put out less content, which is apparently a channel-killing problem.
      Somebody recording a zero-setup 5 minute phone video where they say/do nothing and upload instantly will get a chance to boost to their channel with guaranteed views every single day they upload. But somebody spending 3 months writing/lighting/producing/editing a full production will only get one small chance to hopefully connect with an audience every 3 months. That is a much, much smaller opportunity to connect with people. A high effort well-produced video that misses its audience will get the same handful of views and be killed in the same way as a low effort video that has no audience.
      Small Channels with a high number of low effort videos are rewarded with many chances to be lucky and a small trickle of guaranteed views. Small Channels with a low number of high effort videos tend to be punished with few chances to get lucky. The only way to avoid this problem is with a pre-existing following that is large enough to brute-force a video into success - which means you may need to be building that following elsewhere before you try and convert them to youtube viewership. Or, you need to have access to somebody with a large following who can be convinced to promote your new channel.
      It's not a fair system, nor is it intended to be. You leverage your unfair advantage, or you lose to the people who do.
      The unfortunate end result though, is that this all comes at the expense of the audience. Viewers who try to watch new channels get served a lot of those low effort videos. This trains the audience to stop trying new content (not that they could search for small channels even if they wanted to) and they either stick with the big channels, or they just go spend their time elsewhere, entirely.
      Try to disprove it, Todd.

    think about the fact that RUclips is in bed with MrBeast and other creators don't get a fair chance as the game is totally rigged... RUclips hand picks who makes it and who doesn't. Thumbnails are just a distraction to make you think RUclips is a level playing field

  • @naturalnaela
    @naturalnaela 5 месяцев назад +49

    I’m genuinely curious though, at what point are people clicking on a Mr. Beast video, just bc he’s Mr. Beast, regardless of the thumbnail?
    I just started this video, but I’d love to see this applied to a lot smaller channel (and I don’t mean 100k subs) I mean wayyy smaller 5k or less subs or 5k-10k subs.

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek 5 месяцев назад +4

      Good question. This is my thought process but my rational thought is since he has even more subscribers it’s actually even more of a test with thumbnails since many of us don’t always have time to watch every video we want to but a particular thumbnail will always make a great argument to make us click anyways. Many times I’m short on time so I’m thing to pick a few videos quickly to watch but sure enough if the right thumbnail gets me I’m clicking anyways. With that said the smaller sub count RUclipsrs have to try a bit harder to not just have the thumbnail but to make the content good, entertaining and or informative as well. I’ve seen many channels with AMAZING, thumbnails. I’m talking top tier, but because they didn’t engage the audience as much in the previous videos the algorithm tends to push those out less as they said and the challenge becomes more on improving the content than the thumbnail.

    Even if we can't create custom thumbnails for shorts, would be great if we could at least choose which scene appears as the thumbnail. Very frustrating when RUclips uses a scene that I don't want to highlight, first. As an example, I posted a quiz, and RUclips used the scene with the answers as the thumbnail. I had to unlist it.

    I've found on my other channels that a bad video DOES hurt you with the Algo, because if a specific viewer doesn't watch a certain number of videos in a row from you, they stop suggesting your videos to that viewer. Who knows what the number is or how that's tabulated, but a bad video will shed off the number of people that the algo suggests the next one to. This is clear to anybody who's subscribed to multiple channels, you know that channel you no longer get recommended because you didn't watch a few of their videos? There you go. Normally on your channel you are going to randomly get some videos certain viewers aren't interested in, but a bad video that very few are interested in compounds that and will get more of your viewers 'blacklisted' or whatever it's called when they stop showing them your videos. I'd imagine they probably have a process in place where they eventually show you a few of theirs again to see if you're interested again, but to say that it doesn't hurt your channel with the algo is clearly not true.

    • @YouTubeLiaison
      @YouTubeLiaison 5 месяцев назад +5

      Appreciate the feedback and I'll pass it along! The current thinking is 1) In longform, thumbnails can be a tremendous amount of time/money, and for Shorts, many creators want to keep it casual and not have to compete on thumbs again, and 2) we expect most Shorts views to come from the Shorts feed where there are no thumbnails, so it's unclear how big a priority it is for creators

    • @StoneCoatCountertops
      @StoneCoatCountertops 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@RUclipsLiaison For us DIY/How-To channels that use this platform as an extension of our business, having the ability to choose our thumbnails for Shorts would be extremely beneficial because it makes it easier for our audience to find specific content. It allows for a bit more congruency as far as the channel esthetic as well as keeping content on-brand. Obviously if they're in the shorts feed it's unnecessary, but there's a decent portion of people choosing shorts on the short shelf based on thumb/title.

    • @GoingGreenMom

      I feel like the more I watch the more I realize I'm just getting more and more frustrated with this platform. I only swipe shorts when they don't load correctly. So 99% of the time it is based on their "thumbnail" because I only get to see 2-3 video thumbnails for every set of 4 shorts thumbnails. And 90% of the time Im disappointed by the short and wind up reading comments commiserating with me about how it doesnt explain x, y, or z about the short that would likely be explained in a longer video and so we are hoping for the info in comments. And lately the more time I spend on YT the less I want to have anything to do with it. But I guess they have the addiction aspects down, because I'm sitting here in the midst of a windstorm listening to this feeling bad about not making videos anymore. But whats the point? I seem get more traction on either of my channels without doing all the popularity club stuff my friends do in the genres I hang out in but dont create in, and the biggest part of what I do for that you guys say people should ignore. Just makes it feel like playing with a hidden rulebook anyway. Idk. Think it is time to get off here and switch to a platform that doesnt have me in tears on a random Sunday morning.

Comparing the watch time of a 40min video to a 25min video is like comparing apples and oranges. His advice about putting different text in the thumbnail vs. what is in the title is spot-on. The two bits of text often work better when they are not repetitive, but instead compliment each other by revealing something unique or intriguing about the centent.

      Took a quick look at your channel. Seems like you had a huge hit (and spike in views) with a decluttering video a month ago, and once that video was done, views went back to just above average from before. My guess is, that declutterin video brought in a bunch of new viewers but you haven't given people interested in that specific topic more to watch since then, so they haven't watched anything from you since then. If you want to keep capturing those views, you'll want to make more decluttering videos, or more videos that the people who loved that video would love to watch next

    11:47 To add to my previous comment regarding advocating to allow opt out of auto play for the creator-side, people cannot spend up to 20 seconds looking at a thumbnail if the video auto plays in 2. This whole video doesn't make sense at all because auto play overrides the thumbnail unless the video appears in search, but most traffic comes from the homepage unless it's a utility (how to) video.

  • @MichaelDyrocc
    @MichaelDyrocc 5 месяцев назад +4

    Could we have an op out to the auto play for creators if thumbnails are so important for brand trust?
    If no one knows who I am as a creator and one of my videos auto plays without their consent, consent is given after seeing the title and thumbnail then clicking, then there is no reason why they should watch as they don't know me or my content.
    In fact it's unfairly on me that they scrolled away when they may not even want to watch my content at that time. They didn't click on it, RUclips started it. That's holding new creators back.

    They say they started putting MrBeast, who is apparently also "Jimmy," in thumbnails starting in 2019. That is a really confusing statement to me. 2019 was 5 years ago. Five years ago weren't people watching Simon's Cat, Annoying Orange and Fred videos? I thought MrBeast was new. Also how do MrBeast videos seem to be like a network produced shows like Survivor, at least that's the impression that I got from the thumbnails in this video. Yet PewDiePie , who has 100 million subscribers is basically just a guy sitting in a chair talking about nothing in particular. Like, sit in a chair and talk about nothing, that's worth about 100 million subscribers. Have a huge team of producers, players, editors, lights, cameras and tons of money backing that's worth more, let's say 150 million subscribers. Don't get me wrong 150 million subscribers is amazing. But it's only 50% higher than a guy sitting in a chair talking unscripted for a few minutes. I kind of wish that I had never learned of the existence of RUclips. I'm honestly fine just to watch Crackle and Tubi or whatever. I really don't care. I'm easy to entertain. I don't need interesting thumbnails or anything. My kids are very frustrated at what I watch. For the last few months I've been watching Married with Children on Hulu. I'm up to episode 12 of season 1. Before that I watched Barney Miller. Which took me about a year to watch the 4 seasons that were on Tubi.

Like how are they constantly producing videos, showing up at the Super Bowl, podcasting with Joe Rogan, while also having the entire production team trapped on a deserted island for 100 days? • @YouTubeLiaison
      @YouTubeLiaison 5 месяцев назад +1

      I'd look at it the opposite way - MrBeast can spend a ton of resources coming up with these playbooks which then other creators get basically for free. It costs nothing to sketch thumb ideas on paper, and there are increasingly great tools to comp them into a final thumb. I think new and emerging creators are better positioned to compete than ever!

  • @AiNomadArt
    @AiNomadArt 4 месяца назад +1

    I have an idea for an 'Intro A/B Testing' feature on RUclips.
    After uploading our video, we can observe how the intro performs,
    If we find that certain parts of the intro are not resonating well,
    we may want to make changes.
    However, the current process requires re-editing the intro on a local or cloud video editing platform,
    and deleting the uploaded video, and then re-uploading the edited version.
    This wipes out all the existing views and metrics for the video.
    My proposal is to develop an AI-powered back-end tool that can automatically detect which part(s) of the re-uploaded video according to the existing original have been edited or replaced. It would then seamlessly replace only those edited sections in the existing video, without affecting the rest of the video or resetting the view counts and other metrics.
    This way, creators can iteratively fine-tune and optimize their intro sequences based on real audience data,
    without having to start from scratch each time. It would streamline the creative process and provide more accurate A/B testing insights.

    Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I actually think there's a really good balance with how many times a video is recommended to me. I usually see them enough times to decide and don't need to search for them. One solution, however, would be a more robust "watch later" system, perhaps by better utilizing the list of suggested videos under the video you're watching.
