Here's a blast from the past: Many years ago I owned a stick welding grip meant for use with a standard 12 volt car battery. Obviously it had no control over current output other than the voltage drop as you used it more. But to help in maintaining a near constant (pulsed) arc, it had a tiny solenoid in the head that would pull the welding rod back a fraction of an inch every time an arc was struck, and then let it go forwards again when the arc was lost. On car body panels it was surprisingly effective - as long as you kept the battery voltage constant. I wish I knew what happened to it even though I now own stick, mig, tig, oxy/ace and propane welding equipment. (What can I say? I'm a tool hoarder!)

i used to run pulse with a shallow angle of attack combined with laywire on thin wall stainless pipe, It gets me full penetration without undercutting the material or getting a concave weld bead and minimal overheating. my settings and a full purge usually gives me a full penetration weld that is close to flat on the inside of the pipe. for 2.0mm wall stainless: 1.0 or 1.6mm filler, 50-65 amps, 25-40% ontime with 2-3 pulses per second, shallow angle of attack to your weld puddle gets a bit of an teardrop shape. fine tune settings for your machine and your weld speed.

Tot, maybe you could try making a high throughput diffusion pump? It has no moving parts, and is the only real barrier to a DIY spluttering rig. PVD is just focused TIG pollution, controlled in a vacuum so the vapour from the process ends up on a target. If the ultra high vacuum pump can be made cheaply, the whole process of coating metals becomes open to the home shop. You already have a pulsed power supply and argon gas. With an electro polishing wand (cheap) and your mill, making vacuum chambers would be easy.

Pulse TIG works really well with sanitary tubular fitting welds. I have used it several times to make stills and oil-tanks and have been able to get gas-tight welds without sugaring and no corrosion. For working on "Tuna-Towers" on boats or a the top of a distillation tower. It is a must have as I haven't figured out how to run a peddle while hanging on the rigging.

Funny to see how Adam pulsed in. Always wondered about the big blue fridge in his shop. Didn't know that it is a pulsed cooler from the 60s.

nothing like the loud pop and sizzle when it drops in your ear to test your reaction time....goes hand in hand with the Olympic event of speed lacing and shoe toss...not to be confused with what happens after your grinder watches too many When Tools Attack vids.Nice vid as always!

I weld a lot of stainless at work and we use pulse on everything we weld. We do almost exclusively stainless and it's parts that are really sensitive to heat. I've noticed the pulse also seems to help build a higher bead. It doesn't want to melt in as much so it humps up more.

One of my first welding experiences was using an Arc welder to repair some sieves for our combine. It was fall and rainy so we had to do it inside, my father and I learned after a few days of high temperatures and incredibly achy bodies that welding galvanized metal with poor ventilation is a really bad idea. Long story short, thank you for your content.

I have a wood shop and no metal working tools or needs... but find your videos extremely interesting and entertaining.
