To be fair i think the birds are supposed to be taxidermied and if you were in a museum with taxidermied animals and they came to life and started flying all over the place, you'd be scared too, probably. Also i think the goop is meant to be some kind of stand-in for ectoplasm or blood, and it obviously can't be blood because that's a little graphic, but ghosts love to make blood drip out of things.
