I am, as ever, in a state of bewildered awe at the honesty and authenticity in Merwin's words. He touches me deeply with his poetry, of course. But even more so, he touches me with his humanity, his way of being in the world.

Merwin lived decades on Maui but i'm uncertain what if anything he did to help the Hawaiian people
