Money Mindset as a Tech Professional

  • In the modern world money has come to be seen as something immoral, and financial success as proof that someone is dishonest. The problem is that in the tech world you need money to do anything. Even if you choose to deploy open source software you still need to buy servers, switches and routers.

      Hi Eli
      Would you recommend the ITIL path, for gaining a better understanding on ROI, and more of the service side of things in IT etc?

    • @Shaok353
      @Shaok353 9 лет назад

      Jason raymond There isn't really a path for that. You just have to master what ever your company/contract uses and make it more efficient because you've mastered it and know what corners you can cut without impacting quality. Or just made the impact of quality small enough to make it worth while.

      +Jason raymond I've seen quite a few government / large corporation job postings recently where they want ITIL. If you want to work for a big organization, it's probably a good idea.

    Just found these old videos and am loving them. Been an IT consultant for 18 years and your points are dead on!!!! I’ve worked for VARs, MSPs, a mega IT services company (top 3), and my own consulting firm. I’m astonished by how on-point your observations are in relation to my 18+ years of experience!!
    I usually just skim over your technical videos, but will definitely be watching closer now!!
    Keep up the good work Eli!!

    Don't stop making these Eli. This information is not only invaluable, but unavailable to those seeking employment in the technology field. While open source is a passion for a great many of us, the reality is the IT industry is value driven. If we, as professionals, can't add value to a company.... What are we doing? These new videos seem like common sense, but so many are unfamiliar with the business side of things. I truly want to thank you for being open and honest with your viewers, no matter how abrasive it may seem. I feel people don't understand the motivation behind these videos is centered on success. If I wanted "Ivory tower" information I would pay for classes or get another degree.

    Eli the Computer Guy this is why I love your videos. As an IT professional for 6 years now, this video is real world. I'm moving to a new job now, and what you said in this video as far as I am now (15:27) has already reinforced my decision. I am building a new CRM for a company, and they are paying me good, so what you mentioned about this I can vouch for. Anyone who reads this comment, don't think Eli is trying to make you some money-hungry piece of shit, he's trying to help you further your career because in the business world this is exactly how you have to be. The business isn't catering to your needs, you cater to their needs, and yeah you might have to replace a person with technology but as an IT pro, THAT'S YOUR JOB. Do it. Don't regret it, don't feel bad, if that person can't compete with a piece of technology, why pay for them? Morals mean nothing. Earn your money, buy yourself something nice, buy your wife something nice, buy your children presents for their birthday, take that money and enjoy it and pass it on. Don't complain about Eli being about money, because regardless if you want it to be or not, our world is about money. Money is not evil, you are not evil for going after money to support your family and life. I play guitar, if I wasn't making the money I am I wouldn't be able to afford the guitars and pianos that I want. They make me so happy, and without this money I earn, I wouldn't be able to do the things I want that make me happy outside of my work life. You live to live, not to make money. So if you complain about these videos being about money, you need to get a grip on what your life is about. Money will buy you the hobbies you have. Money will make your life easier, from every single standpoint. If you can reply to this comment with one point that says money doesn't matter and money can't fix this situation, do it. I promise you I will counter your argument with proof and evidence that money can fix the exact situation you're in right now with the society we have.

    The mindset and new direction you are taking with your vids are spot on. Design, configuration, setup, break fix, all of that is taught everywhere, but not this. Coming from a business owner's perspective, I can tell you that you are completely right. I owned and operated an IT company for 3 years, and didn't particularly enjoy it; I closed the doors and ventured on to newer things.
    Being a professionally trained mechanic, I decided to put my business/ relations savvy toward an automotive shop (Mostly computer and electrical related). We did piss poor financially because we catered to people too much. I was only charging $50 an hour. I didn't realize how unbelievably little that amount of money was, and the kind of people it attracted. I was given the same advice by a business consultant, as soon I started charging near $100 an hour, the type of people that I would get work from changed and so did my wallet.
    On $50 an hour, you will not be able to expand and purchase things you need. It's great if you're a humble and kind person and just want to do it as a side note to your current well paying career, but money is the way the world works; If you don't make enough of it you can't succeed in what you want to sometimes.
    People do have a warped view on money. Money is not bad. Maybe I want to run a huge company and be successful. You NEED the money to do it, whether or not you buy hookers and blow with your profit is a different story. You can stab someone with a butter knife, it does not mean that the butter knife is corrupt; It was never intended to stab anything but butter.
    I think people end up with serious conflicting Ideas about this stuff, because they don't understand the core intricacies of how everything cohesively works together. I've learned from my own personal experience because I had the chance to run and own a company, there are some things I was seriously naive to before I had the chance to experience them lol

    Eli, I really could have done with this video ~15-20 years ago. But it's really refreshing to hear this all summarized this well.
    Mind you, I had to figure much of this stuff on my own working many jobs living paycheck to paycheck, unable to pay for all the trainings I needed.
    I remember doing a servicing job when I was asked to do a hardware testing for a job that wouldn't pay even my fare there and back if I didn't live around the corner from the company.
    And what I didn't realize back then: They were a graphics design company. And obviously nobody there understood how business works. It was hell.
    I had to explain to them, that I just don't own the tools and they would have to buy everything if they wanted me to figure it out. Then they fired me.

    What do companies want to see when hiring? An employee that shows up to work on time, doesn't call in sick constantly, doesn't whine and cry about having to work long hours. You can have all the degrees in the world, doesn't mean you can actually do the job you are applying for. Real world experience is what is needed. Anybody can get a degree if they are given the chance, its what that person does outside of that course of material that will make or break their career. A person needs to put those skills they are learning to real world use whether it be on their own personal equipment, or getting an internship through a local business. A friend of mine is working on becoming a certified welder & diesel mechanic. He got a job at a logging company full time so in a way his job is paying for his school, but he is learning both in class and in the real world. Colleges don't teach real world, they teach out of a book full of what-ifs. Real world experience is what a company needs and wants. If you show up with a basket full of certificates and degrees they will likely pass over you because they'll look at you as being over-qualified...Micron did that to me. They will also pass over you because you could be a liability to the company in the way of you are over-qualified due to your skills, you work for xx company for a while, then another company offers you more money so you quit xx company and move on creating a hardship for xx company now because they spent time training you to their standards and now you up and leave.
    I find it funny that people whine when you tell them you charge $60 an hour for a service call. Well I can fix it myself, I can do this, that or the other. A few days later they're calling you back asking for an appointment because they had no clue how to fix the problem, and on top of that they broke whatever it was worse because they were screwing around with it trying to fix it. Now they're even more mad because instead of $60 and what would have been a simple repair now cost them several hundred dollars in parts they damaged due to their lack of knowledge of that product and their lack of ability to properly disassemble and repair the product.
    Another thing too, I've seen companies sending their service techs out on calls all over the place. They don't stop and look at the locations they are sending their techs so their poor tech is going from one side of town to the other, back across town several times a day rather than looking at the calls, and planning a route. Huge time saver is having an office manager that can plan a route on the fly, move calls around when needed, reschedule customers who had to leave and won't be home or work.
    My boss has been talking about closing down our shop and just doing service work, and having me do all the phone & scheduling work from home. I thought at first that would be horrible for me because I'd lose pay and hours. In the end when I stop and think about it, it would save me money, I wouldn't have to leave home and drive to work, I could work whatever hours I wanted because I could work wherever I want and I'd have the phone with me and computer no matter where. Overall many of our calls are people calling wanting free advice...don't need a 10,000 square foot building for that LOL. About 95% of our calls are for service work, 5% for sales. We do appliance service/repair/sales/service/installation. The place to be is in the service/repair industry there's always something breaking. Economy goes downhill and sales goes downhill as well but people want their stuff fixed because they gotta have it.

    For me the EYE OPENER was the quote that this (capitalistic) system might not be the best system, but that we are in it anyway.
    As a natural health therapist I know that most genelal practioners and specialists have to little knowledge of the broad field of the so called "alternative medicine" or "additional treatments" and therefore sometimes reject it completely. I have seen some good results in the treatment of cancer (although regretfully not in all cases). So if your wife does not reacts to her present therapy, you might consider to contact alternative therapists and ask if they see other ways to succesfully treat her.

      Bomb Tech Maybe I didn't say it right, but if money the MAIN goal...you'll fail because your product will suck. What I tried to say is if your goal is to make a good product, the money will come. If money is your MAIN goal...you will fail; if money is the result of your product...you will win.

    • @jc5604
      @jc5604 9 лет назад

    • @danielcoffman1022
      @danielcoffman1022 9 лет назад

      BB Christopher
      I think you misunderstand what I'm saying. I'm saying, if ALL your focus is on JUST getting money, your product is going to suck. If your goal is to make a good product AND sell it for good money, then you will succeed. Money isn't evil...people's mentality is/can be.

    • @danielcoffman1022
      @danielcoffman1022 9 лет назад

      BB Christopher
      That is what I meant when I said "Money is evil when money is the only focus" Money isn't evil...but it becomes evil when people have a bad attitude. This is going to sound weird...but an object/idea becomes bad when it is treated badly...like when people make owning guns something bad. A gun, when used in the correct mentality, for protection, for hunting, for keeping society in check, was/is a good thing. When people started using guns JUST to kill, that is when guns became viewed as evil. It is our mentality that determines if something is evil or not. I can make money good if I have the correct mentality about it; money can also be evil if I decide to have the wrong mentality about it.
      I see now that I need to be better about explaining what I'm trying to say...people seem to be misunderstanding me.

The term "Technology" doesn't mean electronics. It means it's a combination of methods, techniques and processes for either products, services or general purpose to specific fields.

    Additionally, it's the client's choice if they purchase your service for the stated $1000. They are not being forced to against their will. If they do, in fact, make the purchase, they perceive your product as having a value greater than the set $1000 and see the transaction as a deal on their side of the bargain. More people need to understand basic economics.

    The one thing content producers should bear in mind on youtube is that a large number of people who comment on your videos, do not speak English as a first language. This can make what they write seem aggressive or negative, where no such intention was meant. Deleting the posts will not encourage people to participate. Unless a poster crosses the line and gets too personal, let other users deal with them.
    But getting back on topic, your videos contain some top business tips that apply not only to the IT sector but to all self employed or small business operators. I have done a ten week (60 hour) Start your own business course a few years back and did not learn a fraction of what I learned listening to you.

    LOL! People who say money is evil- Do not have any money, and will always be an employee that will work their whole life to make money for someone with the drive and money to be an employer. Don't get me wrong, An abundance Money will not make people happy if that person is sad in general. It will just make that person into a sad rich person. From my perspective- Eli is spot on when explaining how it takes money to create the imtrastructure necessary to be a successful businessman. THAT is the reality of maintaining a successful business and keeping employees in a secure environment that they will be able to take care of business, and not have to worry about if they will have a job next week. Without job security for employees, a business is doomed to fail. It takes more than hard work to build a business.

    God damn Eli the Computer Guy I commented before about how this video is so important, but now at 37:14 in your video where I AM an employee for 6 years, wow. I can't even express to new IT guys who are trying to get somewhere and move up in corporate, this is the most important point in this video so far. You need to speak up, you need to recognize when your sales, marketing, etc. is expanding you need to have the software AND hardware to scale to their departments. There is no question about it. No matter how much you think, "Oh IT is the least important and money can be better spent" or whatever the fuck you think, no. NO, NO NO. You speak up. Eli you are the man. At the beginning of this video I was like Eli is fucking on one and tripping, then I kept watching and I was more like Eli knows the fuck he's talking about because he's been there. Listen to this guy. Don't judge him for money, etc. just listen to what he says. This guy is smart, this guy knows business, and if you're an IT guy starting out this guy will teach you the hardships you will ASBOLUTELY face. You will run into these situations even if you're employeed by one company or consulting. YOU WILL RUN INTO THIS. You need to be prepared. Eli the Computer Guy you are fucking awesome bro, and fuck the people who have said you are corrupt or whatever for trying to get paid for the simplicity you offer these big businesses. They just don't understand what the real IT world is like outside of small business consulting. It's a shark tank.
