HulkieD...wow. The Part B vamp is awesome. Reminds me of the late nights I'd listen to 1060 on my clock radio in my bedroom. Great memories. Love the KYW signature.
I seem to recall, of all things, South Park using this theme for a promo some years back. To say the least, I did a massive double take and was half expecting to see a South Park version of Larry Kane pop up out of nowhere. I know it's not out there in the public, but I'd love to hear the theme from the much maligned "News Tonight/Newsbeat/Newsday" era of the early '90s. The execution lacked, but the music was magnificent.
When did this promo air? I get the feeling it must've been before Viacom and CBS broke up, they probably searched for news music they could use without penalty or whatever.
At 11pm on September 9, 1995, KYW-TV aired a special 2-hour edition of News 3 as the station's final newscast affiliated with NBC and owned by Westinghouse, followed by another special edition of News 3 at 1am on September 10, 1995 as their first newscast affiliated with CBS.
Uh, no. They aired a regular newscast that night and then a repeat of SNL. When that was done, they aired a “KYW-3 is now your CBS station” id and continued normal programming.
@@HulkieD I am so very late to this, but is the music that they used for the station switch branding anywhere on the internet? I've been driven crazy trying to find it.
When Westinghouse merged with CBS in 1993, they had to choose between channels 3 and 10, as the combined company could not own both. Westinghouse kept KYW 3, switched it to CBS and sold WCAU 10 to NBC, which had always wanted an O&O in Philly (remember the mess when KYW moved to Cleveland in the 50's, then had to move back?). New imaging and themes were prepared for both stations.
Westinghouse bought CBS in 1995 but prior to that they had reached an agreement where Westinghouse would affiliate all their stations to CBS. That required CBS to sell WCAU.
Again, the CBS/Westinghouse merger happened in 1993, not '95. CBS/Westinghouse, now a combined company, was stuck with two stations in Philly and had to divest one to meet FCC rules. NBC, which had long wanted an owned station in Philly, struck a deal for WCAU (10) and purchased it from CBS/Westinghouse, which did operate both stations briefly before turning over the keys to channel 10 to NBC when FCC approved the deal. That's when KYW switched to CBS and WCAU to NBC.
Sadly, the 1998 package dubbed KYW Enforcer and the 1999 package, KYW New Generation, haven't shown up in the wild. The 2001 Deaf Dog package and the 2003 Stephen Arnold packages are known to be floating out there, and obviously the ones they used after that - News in Focus and Regular-Ass Enforcer - are lurking about. Obviously I'm not going to tell you how to access them. ;)
Besides the KYW themes, I wonder if you'll happen to have the entire cuts of Non-Stop Music's "WPIX Custom News Package" (including cuts from the 1998 update) by any chance? Though the entire news music community is still looking for it!
As a lifelong resident of the Delaware Valley, I thank you so much for this. I love it. It takes me back to my childhood. Is there any way you could get one with the theme from 1998?
That's a good question. While I like the Westinghouse 3, I get a sense that its time has passed, at least here. The current logo is plain, but not that bad, and the CBS legacy here, thanks to WCAU, was pretty strong to begin with. "CBS 3" and that logo were absolutely the right moves to make. If they decided to go back to KYW-3 like KPIX and WBZ did, it would be a mistake.
Jacob Smith In Philadelphia, the universal designation for not-cable/local stations is "3, 6, and 10". i.e., "I don't get cable, I just get 3, 6, and 10." Calls, at least here, just aren't important. Plus, the KYW branding and musical signature was lifted from Newsradio. If you say "KYW" to someone they'll recall 1060, and not 3. The vamp of the theme above is almost an exact match to the Newsradio vamp of the time. It was a borrowed identity.
Jacob Smith I like "CBS 3" because it separates the stations and gives the TV side its own identity. It also helps alleviate the lingering confusion from the Big Switch. And the PNP/Enforcer signature is just as well known as the KYW sig. People noticed when CBS 3 brought that back.

I agree with that last part. The themes give me chills every time I hear them.

“Check It Out With Dr. Steve Brule” also used some tracks
I remember this ever since i was 2. Man does this bring me back memories.,
This is awesome, thanks for posting.
Still missing News Day Theme, News Beat, & The News tonight themes. I miss those!!
Awesome news theme!
"You give us 20 minutes, and we'll give you the world"

WCAU was the one that had the big hoopla. At 1am they did “News 10 Premiere Edition”, their first newscast as NBC.

KYW was affiliated with NBC and owned by The Westinghouse Broadcasting Company (Group W) before The Big Switch with WCAU.

+HulkieD LOL @ "Regular-Ass Enforcer"
If you know of one specific source, they just recently put up full, good quality versions of KYW Enforcer and KYW New Millennium/New Generation.
and they might actually use them again in between Commercial breaks.
@@BlaineStewart123 It's true 😆

The 1998 theme of KYW was actually a custom version of Enforcer that was dropped in mid-1999 due to the station's low ratings.
I remember this as the package used during the NBC-to-CBS transition
Bea-u-ti-ful!
do you have the 1991 variant?
sounds like the sims
Gabe Village
There's a slightly different version of this theme for the morning news broadcasts, do you happen to have that one?
Do you miss the old "3" logo, HulkieD?

Why do you say that? A lot of Bostonians did miss the WBZ call letters, and WJZ has never dropped the Group W "13" logo. I personally like the logos.

Wait, people are still confused about KYW and WCAU some twenty years later?
