When I was a kid we used to watch these races every weekend at the local tracks around. There were a bunch of tracks we could drive to and my fathers friend was one of the drivers. We had some much fun driving to the tracks, camping out and watching the races. I miss these kind of races with these cars. These drivers had big brass balls.
ah Winchester! when it was in dirt it had even higher banking, could you imagine the fury back then those dirt champ cars would run with, it was said to be about 40 degrees banking on the wiki, and even today its the highest banked track in the world or equivalent to the highest in current auto race use, if you are talking about outside of Winchester Indiana, The one I missed was seeing the Hoosier 100, the equivalent of Indy racing on dirt, though I never really cared about it till about last year I mean I heard about silver crowns but I just though they were another sprint car, when I was trying to find footage of running at the Hoosier mile thinking they ran the world of outlaws there, I think I mistook them for the silver crowns as several of the outlaw drivers also competed in silver crown at the time like steve the king of the dirt kinser and that iss who I saw in the race, or maybe I am not crazy and it really was the world of outlaws at the hoosier mile but I cant find any evidence that it ever happened, I remember the race in question was on tv in the late 90's early 2000's I saw they raced super dirt week at the moody mile but that was in New York, and now the Hoosier mile has had its surfaced lime stoned for year round harness horse racing and training, tradition of auto be condemned and cast to the wind, covid delayed the work in 2020 and it looked like they were going to have one in 2021 but two or three weeks before the Hoosier was to happen this year they started the conversion to limestone :{, one of only three miles the silver crowns raced and in the racing capital of the world city worst of all, it would be like building a hindu temple in vatican city, or a church in mecca saudi arabia, it almost seems like sacrilege, however there are big horse tracks in central Indiana, and one is a mile just outside Indy in Shelbyville, now if only I could convince the parties involved, it is the mile dirt that its said the dirt roadsters were made to use and did best at. right?
How'd I miss this great collection over the years... thanks. Salem...Winchester...Terra Heute ... these make today's wrecks seem tame. I think you have a fatal at 2:29
They look pretty much the same, but technoligically they're worlds apart. Modern drivers would crap their pants behind the wheel of a sprint car build in '66.
In the 60's and into the 70's. That's when racing was still fun. I remember when we would see at least 60 hobby stock entries and about 30 Sportsman class with an equal number in the Late Models. They ran Super Modified cars also, until they proved too be to dangerous for the track owners on a paved track. These Modified were way to fast for a third mile paved oval. Local Racing is just a shadow of what it used to be. Money and technology destroyed the sport. Our State Fair used to have auto racing as a big draw for our Fair here in Minnesota. Running multiple classes over the two weeks. But the city finally tore the track up because there was not enough entries to justify the expense to maintain the track for a once a year event. Very sad.
Watch USAC sprint cars and World of Outlaws sprint cars they race at dirt tracks all over the country highlights on youtube. USAC still races at terre haute action track featured at 2:10 in the video
@@nickphilkill818 I have seen both series race many times. No one will ever top A.J. Foyt in his day when he raced any kind of car, anywhere, anytime, and second place was losing. Only a young Tony Steward has ever come close.
Back in the late 60's and early 70's the full cages were viewed by some drivers as dangerous because they felt it gave those drivers a sense of invulnerability.
Did you need Dick Wallens permission? I have hours of his stuff I bought years ago and wasn't aware he was giving permission to use it. I don't think he would have enjoyed the sound track. I don't mean to jump on the band wagon and I appreciate the effort but the music didn't exactly enhance the dramatic narrative and emotional impact of the film as it should. I love sprint cars and nearly all forms of music but that was almost unwatchable with the sound.

Nice video! Reminds me of an old VHS thrills and spills tape! Excellent color!
Those cars were absolute beasts and so were the crazy bastards that drove them.
Great video, Thanks for posting
Thanks old video of Winchester In speedway. My cousin Charle Shaw owns race track. Thanks Alan

One of my favourite YT videos.
Those old school sprint cars had no protection. Those guys risked their lives every race!
Great to see these old cars, but the dumb music does not work in any form of motor racing IMO.

Nah he had a roll cage
Not everyone walked away from all these crashes
No he survived
some fantastic footage
Great video
Back when racing was a game of Russian roulette with your life.
It looks like they had GoPro's in those days...lmao 😜😆🤣
It's kinda funny just how little sprint cars have changed since then.

nice but what would possess you to put this noise on a great video.I dont just mute anymore.I dont watch..

Back in the late 60's and early 70's the full cages were viewed by some drivers as dangerous because they felt it gave those drivers a sense of invulnerability.
Kevin Mcniff they said the same about putting wings on top too.
Undoubtedly true. However, safety advances have gone so far that nowadays drivers practically ARE invulnerable.
Music is distracting. Had to mute it.
Tip : Just turn the volume off, shitty music doesn't help anything.
2:55 who, and where?
Dick Wallen footage.
Kevin Furay I have at lest 2 more old Dick Wallen videos on VHS in need to get transferred and downloaded
