- In this episode of Kult America, we visit some of the Soviet monuments in Warsaw Poland. This was an interesting experience because despite many Poles having a strong aversion to the memory of what USSR did in their country, they are still surrounded by constant reminders of that era. We visited the former seat of the Communist authorities (Known as KC PZPR), The former site of the planning commission which was a great example of the social realist architectural style, Marszałkowska Housing District (MDM) (Marszałkowska Dzielnica Mieszkaniowa (MDM), Konstytucji Square (Plac Konstytucji), The Soviet Military Cemetery which is burial place to over 20,000 Soviet soldiers who died fighting against Nazi Germany. Before the day was over we also visited the Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), Defilad Square (Plac Defilad), and the Red Army Memorial, in Skaryszewski Park in Warsaw.

From my perspective as one polish person, i think that as long as they'll make sure history about this monuments is known for viewer, they should stay.

The Soviets invaded Poland with their Nazi allies in 1939, these memorials are memorials to invaders in oppresses.
I'm a polish girl and when I watched your first movie today I was really shocked and I was under huge impression how American guy can talking about especially polish but also international history and can blow my mind because of knowledge, feelings and everything! +Marzena Muntowska I was recently telling my wife that people probably thought I was insane when I first started visiting here, I'd literally ask strangers for their home address so that I could send them letters from America and get to know them, I was desperate to connect.. I can't explain why, but I had a deep fascination for Poland from the first moment saw it, love at first sight. Art, music, radio, and now video have all been a pretext for me to feel I have meaning in the Polish society. So thank you for subscribing, in some weird way this type of connection with people makes me feel at home here.
plac konstytucji was originally named after constitution of 1952. since we have new constitution many asume that the name is harmless and as we recover true meaning of words constitution square name should be left as it is.
Great video! Despite nickname i'm polish by the way. Constitution square originally refered to the Constitution of People's Republic of Poland from 1952, after 89 they didn't change the name but in the official papers, they've changed the meaning reffering it now to all our historical constitutions.
As for the soviet soldiers, thanks to them we get rid of nazi's from here. They fall for that purpouse and I do respect them. None of them have in mind an idea to "enslave" Poland after war, they're main goal was to take a revenge on nazi's.
Palace of Culture and Science it's a great building itself, it is the home for a museum, three theatres, cinema, swimming pool, few private schools, famous congress hall and a lot of sport groups like fencing or acrobatic.

Well. I (even though I'm from Poland) do not like Warsaw. I find it ugly since I literally hate communist architecture. Looking at Warsaw today and comparing it to recordings or photos from pre-war Warsaw, I can only feel great regret that communists took over. So much of our culture just gone, replaced by ugly buildings planned by regime we did not ask for.

True. But if there was independant Poland after War there is no doubt that Warsaw would be reconstructed a lot more. (Not to mention we would get war reparations instead of rejecting them or passing them to Russia). Or at least it would be spared the ugly communist architecture or the so called "Gift from Stalin". To zależy do jakiej konstytucji odnosi się nazwa placu. Mamy święto kontstytucji 3 maja, która to konstytucja przywróciła absolutną władzę króla i obaliła wyniszczającą demokracje szlachecką co było ważnym przełomem, oczywiście komuniści zapewne nawiązywali do ich chorej komunistycznej konstytucji.

+Kult America No, it wouldn't be a good solution. It is the highest building in Warsaw and nearly everybody weds The Palace of Culture to Warsaw,it is a kind of symbol but the history will be always conected with that one. :D

I wish those monuments remain(that goes for all of those monuments all over Poland not just Wasaw).Those Russian soldiers who liberated Poland were just soldiers they had no say in what political figures such Stalin dictated.

Plac Konstytucji (Constitution Square) was named for commemoration of communist constitution from 1952. But the name can be used also in plural form without any changes - as Constitutions Square - for commemoration of all polish constitutions, from one from 1791 (second one in the world, after american one) to the present. There was also reason, that plenty of people live at houses with adress "Plac Konstytucji", and in case of change all of them must change identity cards and other documents.

Maybe an option would be to convert Pałac Kultury i Nauki into huge museum of communism? It could be surrounded by all remained monuments. Maybe it is just a dream becouse this location is important point of city traffic. Definitely we can not just destroy it. PKiN is a part of history.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Germans wanted Slavic extermination and resettlement while Soviets wanted to create communist republics across the globe. Between October Revolution and WW2 there was loads of Poles, Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians living in all Russian Empire regions and all those nations later on were these who went on to Berlin through Poland. Many of soldiers were Polish, many had families in Poland and they didn’t treat Poles as enemies - Soviet government did as they seen any state and nationality enemy of ‘ new soviet human ‘. Average Soviet soldier was doing what he was told to sometimes under treat of death what was tragic but necessary to win the war. About rapes - of course they did happen but whats interesting if you look at polish pre war border they were happening on territories of Third Reich at that time or western/northern Poland. How come theres no information on rapes in eastern part? Because in western part and on eastern borders of Third Reich, Poles were signing voluntarily volksdeutsche list and were often soldiers of Wehrmacht, betrayers of polish state and enemies of both Soviets and Poles.
Jak bardzo negatywnych emocji nie wzbudzał we mnie symbol sierpa i młota to szanuję ludzi i życie. Tak samo szanuję ofiarę krwi żołnierzy Armii Czerwonej. Ci żołnierze zostali wyrwani ze swoich rodzin i musieli przebyć tysiące kilometrów bo wysłał ich tu ich rząd i dowództwo armii jemu podległe. W Rosji od czasów wojny do teraz widać demograficzny deficyt mężczyzn spowodowany właśnie wojną. Pomniki "bohaterów" Armii Radzieckiej to dla mnie po prostu miejsca, które przypominają co wydarzyło się w historii, ilu ludzi z różnych stron świata zginęło i co było tego przyczyną. Historię jaka by nie była należy pamiętać.

Odnośnie pl. Konstytucji. Nazwę nadano w 1952 r. co zbiegło się wtedy z wprowadzeniem konstytucji PRL, dla ówczesnych było jasne którą konstytucję upamiętnia. Miejsca tego przed wojną nie było (inny układ ulic) więc i nazwy przedwojennej nie ma i nie ma do czego wracać. Nie wytworzyła się "podwójna pamięć" o tym miejscu. Kiedyś były próby poszukiwania nowej nazwy ale ostatecznie postanowiono umieścić na placu tablicę upamiętniającą wszystkie polskie konstytucje i w ten sposób nie zmieniając nazwy nadać jej nową treść. To się chyba udało zważywszy, iż to ten plac jest wybierany na miejsce demonstracji wzywających do obrony konstytucyjnych praw jak i ostatnio samej Konstytucji (tej obecnej).
Plac Konstutucji NIE UPAMIETANIA konkretnie Konstytucji z roku 1952. Tak bylo tylko pierwotnie. Obecna nazwa upamietnia wszystkie konstytucje w liczbie mnogiej jako symbol odradzania sie panstwa stad taka nazwa placu. Upamiętnia konstytucje:
3 Maja (1791)
Księstwa Warszawskiego (1807)
Królestwa Polskiego (1815)
tzw. Małą (1919)
tzw. Marcową (1921)
tzw. Małą (1947)
PRL-u (1952)
tzw. Małą (1992)
aktualną (1997),
Wiec -Plac Konstytucji (l. mnoga).
Constitution Square was commemorateing the constitution from 1952 only at the begining. Nowadays the name of the square commemorate all constitution in Poland like a symbol of regeneration (1791,1807,1815,1919, 1921, 1947, 1952, 1992,1999).
[So it should be a pluar form of the name -> constitutions]
+Warsaw Movie Guide Jestem innego zdania. Otóż nazwa "pl. Konstytucji" została nadana temu miejscu dokładnie 22 lipca 1952, czyli w tym samym dniu, w którym Sejm uchwalił tę konstytucję, której imieniem nazwano plac, oraz w tym samym dniu, w którym uroczyście otwarto Marszałkowską Dzielnicę Mieszkaniową.
Natomiast ten wykaz konstytucji kolejnych... to jest współczesna interpretacja. Nazwa "plac Konstytucji" brzmi tak ogólnie, że da się do niej dopasować dowolną interpretację. Tę współczesną interpretację umocniono w świadomości niektórych ludzi poprzez Miejski System Informacji: na szklanych tablicach z nazwą placu, wyjaśniających pochodzenie nazwy wypisano konstytucje polskie w kolejności historycznej. Jednak nikt nigdy nie ogłosił zmiany interpretacji nazwy placu. Przedmówca usiłuje sprytnie umocnić swoją interpretację powołując się na deklinację rzeczownika "konstytucja" i podnosząc, że dopełniacz liczby mnogiej tego rzeczownika uzasadnia jego interpretację. Zabawne, że dopełniacz liczby pojedynczej tego rzeczownika jest równy dopełniaczowi liczby mnogiej tegoż rzeczownika, a zatem argument Przedmówcy jest do niczego ;)
Proszę zauważyć, że ul. Rydygiera na Żoliborzu nazywała się przed 1991 r. ... Rydygiera! Ale w tym przypadku nie mamy takiej dowolności z interpretacją nazwy. Ulica powstała po II wojnie świat. i nazwano ją imieniem Juliusza Rydygiera (1892-1942), działacza Komunistycznej Partii Polski. W 1991 r. zmieniono nazwę ulicy w sprytny sposób: wystarczyło zmienić imię patrona... bo Ludwik Rydygier (1850-1920) to profesor medycyny, pionier chirurgii raka żołądka.
+Sebastian Kozłowski oczywiscie kazdy ma swoja interpretacje (jak widac rowniez Pan i bardzo dobrze), jednak z prawnego punktu widzenia --jesli mamy juz analizowac to tak dosadnie to Plac Konstytucji (upamietniajacy ta z 1952 roku) mimo ze oczywiscie z zalozenia mial ja upamietniac to formalnie nigdy nie istnial. Byla to nazwa tylko zwyczajowa funkcjonujaca ,,oficjalnie" w przestrzeni miejskiej i tak zostala przyjeta przez mieszkancow jednak nigdy nie posiadala podstawy prawnej, zreszta jak wiele innych miejsc w Warszawie. Okreslenie ,, nikt nigdy nie ogłosił zmiany interpretacji nazwy placu" jest nie do przyjecia poniewaz interpetacja moze byc dowolna i interpretacji nie mozna narzucac a ,,zmieniac nazwe" mozna tylko oficjalnie funkcjonujaca na mocy prawnej a Plac Konstytucji wczesniej jej nie posiadal. Dopiero w roku 2012 weszla w zycie ustawa podtrzymujaca nazwe placu jako upamietnienie wszystkich Konstytucji (rowniez ta z 1952..). Czy byl to efekt lenistwa i oszczedzenia sobie klopotow na zmiane nazwy na zupelnie innaczej brzmiaca moze nie byloby zle i oszczedzilo sporow ale to juz zupelnie inna sprawa. Jednak z upamietnieniem Konstytucji nie jest to tylko nasze zdanie ale i rowniez innych varsavianistow, z ktorymi na miedzy innymi ten temat mielismy okazje rozmawiac kilka lat temu:) Moim zdaniem odrzucanie ,,do niczego"argumentu z identyczna liczba mnoga rzeczownika jedynie z powodu ze brzmi on tak samo jak w liczbie pojedynczej jest co najmniej absurdalnie. Wiec paradoksalnie z formalnego punktu widzenia odnosnie nazwy placu jest odrotnie jak Pan napisal. Nie mniej dziekujemy za podzielenie sie z nami Panska opinia. Pozdrawiamy!
+Warsaw Movie Guide W "Encyklopedii Warszawy" wyd. PWN, Warszawa, 1994, na stronie 358, pod hasłem "Konstytucji, plac" czytamy:
(...) nazwa dla uczczenia Konstytucji PRL uchwalonej także 22 VII 1952 (...).
Ponadto w "Encyklopedii Warszawy" wyd. PWN, Warszawa 1975 na stronie 549 znajdujemy hasło "Rada Narodowa". Na kolejnych stronach jest obszerna tabela zatytułowana "Sesje Rady Narodowej m.st. Warszawy 1944-1974"; na stronie 551 pod datą 19 VII 1952 mamy temat obrad "Uroczysta sesja w związku z 8 rocznicą Manifestu Lipcowego, debatą konstytucyjną w Sejmie (...) Uchwała o nadaniu nazwy pl. Konstytucji."
Nie było, nie ma i jeszcze jakiś czas nie będzie żadnej ustawy o nazwie jakiejkolwiek ulicy i jakiegokolwiek placu w Warszawie, ani innym mieście w Polsce. Ustawa bowiem jest aktem prawnym wydawanym przez Sejm. Sejm natomiast nie zajmuje się nazwami ulic i placów, bo te kompetencje przekazał Radom Narodowym ustawą o drogach publicznych z roku 1985; ustawa ta wciąż obowiązuje. Ponieważ Rad Narodowych już nie ma, to obowiązek nadawania ulicom i placom nazw wynikający z tej ustawy ciąży na samorządach terytorialnych. Samorządy zaś podejmują takie decyzje w drodze uchwały, a nie ustawy.
Informacje rzekomo uzyskane przez Panią/Pana w rozmowie z gronem anonimowych varsavianistów, na które się Pani/Pan powołuje, to nie jest żaden argument. To jest klasyczny argumentum ad verecundiam (w anglojęzycznej literaturze przedmiotu logiki i dialektyki ten wybieg nazywa się argument from authority). Zawsze jest mi przykro, gdy muszę wypominać swoim PT Rozmówcom używanie wybiegów erystycznych, zwłaszcza, gdy sięgają po takie prostackie środki, jak ten.
Na ten team można by napisać rozprawkę hehe :P, ponieważ z jednej strony powinno się zniszczyć poradzieckie, brzydkie i pozbawione prawdy pomniki. Z drugiej strony tak jak powiedziałeś ludzie przechodzą i widzą to kłamstwo wypisane na kamieniu i przypominają sobie, kim byli i są Rosjanie i kogo tak naprawdę powinniśmy się bać.

Ну, я живу не далеко от Москвы и у нас в городе стоят дома, во время правительства сталина. Выглядят очень красиво, но, в Москве, слава Богу не в центре, стоят тоже дома того же периода и смотрится это ужасно, хотелось бы, чтобы их снесли. Жаль, что у нас не избавились от куммунистического прошлого, огорчает.

It seems to me that you shouldn't tell the version which you know, it would be interesting on opinion of people that they answer this or that question, to listen that they tell as they live today and to ask people in the different countries, simple people on the street will never lie.

scars and reminders of Soviet occupation, no point in keeping monuments built to glorify Stalin and Red Army, criminals and oppressors.It would be more understandable if German had Hitler-Monument in Berlin. Actually there is a huge Leopold monument in Brussels - murderer, but would they keep a monument of a murderer of Belgians?

Moim zdaniem wszystkie pomniki, miejsca i inne budynki są upamiętnieniem tych zdarzeń jestem pewien że dużo ludzi przechodząc koło tych wszystkich pomników i miejsc , pomyśleli jakie życie było dawniej, i jak bardzo nasi żołnierze poświęcili się temu co mamy teraz. Wydaję mi się że wzbudza to bardziej wzruszenie i dumę niż chęć zemsty i nienawiści do danych krajów , czas leczy rany .
Soviets didn't liberated Poland! They grabbed half of our pre-war territory and occupied the rest. USA agreed that with Stalin at Yalta conference. Churchill who also involved in the conference was only the background. These obscure monuments are definitevely the scars commemorating long period suffering and lack of freedom. Hitler was Stalin's doormat so it's obvious that Germans and You have both pillaged and burnt my country. Germans regret and have apologized at last. My ancestors in last moment fled NKWD to central Poland. Don't insist me your shitty propaganda. No one in Poland think that "Stalin liberated" the country. Even former commies. There's no single pro-Russian political party in Poland.

Artjom Pavlov So why you repeat soviet slogans? I don't understand it. Russians have captured cinders of Warsaw, not liberated. They were even killing or catching Polish partisan and Home Army groups which have been trying to get torn to fighting Warsaw.
Jeśli chodzi o groby żołnierzy radzieckich, to nie mamy za co im dziękować. Niby "wyzwolili" Warszawę, a spowodowali upadek Powstania Warszawskiego, śmierć lub wysiedlenie dziesiatek tysięcy ludzi. Ja nie uważam ich za bohaterów. Ale co zrobić, skoro groby już są? No nic. Przecież grobów bezcześcić nie będziemy. To wbrew naszej chrześcijańskiej tradycji.

Te miejsca to nie powód do dumy, to symbole opresji pod którą znalazł się nasz kraj, gdyby w Polsce faktycznie coś się zmieniło to po 25 latach "wolności" śladu nie byłoby po tych budynkach. I know when I was in Warsaw, I found it strange that the president lives in a mini White House and the Soviets have a palace and a compound of many acres. Why didn't they kick them out when they had the chance?

Definitely scars. I (and I'm speaking for myself) do not see soviet army as liberators. First they invaded us along with Hitler, denying us a chance to continue resistance. They disarmed or killed thousands of polish soldiers, and those who were disarmed, a lot of them were killed as well, later. Patriots that were seen as danger to future communistic rule. Then they let Warsaw bleed during the uprising which took care of another batch of polish patriots. They fought against our resistance army. Then, after the war they took control of our country leading to further deaths and oppression. Branding patriots as traitors and glorifying Red Army. Most (if not all) of these monuments (I mean these in gratitude to Red Army) were not put there spontaneously by grateful citizens. They were placed there by communist party to appease Moscow and forge new history.
Arris I agree. Before the war, Warsaw was known to be one of the most beautiful city in Europe. French writers even said it was the "Eastern Paris" during the 1920ies.
But of course, it's not easy for Poland to maintain her things. Hitler bombed the city to ashes, and Stalin build concrete on the top of it. WTF.
Since Soviet startet the world War along with Hitler, they can never be seen as "liberators". My grandparents took part of the Warsaw uprising, so I will always have Warsaw in my heart.

I basically hate the russians. They signed a pact With germans and attacked us for the east. They murdered also many talented generals, pilots and officers (read about Katyn). After the war they hunted for Zolnierze Wykleci. Those were the People that fought against the communust. I recommend you the upcoming film "Historia Roja".You have an very interesting channel. I do not hate the children, women, or men... their grandfathers. My grand grandmothers family were murdered by the Red Army in the beginning of 1940. They entered their home, killed her father and order brother. Afer that they raped (4 men) her younger sister (11 years old) and mother. After they were done, they killed them. Mabye you want believe this, but my grand grandmother survived this by hiding under the table in the kitchen (she was 13 then). After that she went to a family living in the same village to ask for help and they took care if her. My family is not the only one who such a thing have happend to...
In Poland the people are saying that if you had to be killed, it was "better" if the germans killed you. They only took their gun and shooted you, however the russians... Well, you know the story...
Im 16 years old, very patriotic, and not the only one who have such a opinion about them. I hope that you are in Warsaw at the Dzień Wybuchu Powstania Warszawskiego. You can meet many old people that took a part in Warsaw Uprising and talk with them about the war, and you will hear the same from them just what i said here. After you are done talking, go to the way with the Palm Tree, and be there at 17.00. You could do a video about that (that would be awsome). You will take a part in W-hour. The W-hour is when the Warsaw Uprising brought out and fought. You will see Warsaw stooped in 1 minute. The whole city.

Moim zdaniem żadnych pomników nie powinno się likwidować, jest to część pamięci i historii Polski jak i Rosji. Niestety większość Polaków żyje przeszłością, a nie powinno. Mają żal do Rosjan ale czy to coś teraz zmieni. Nie możemy całe życie wypominać ale nie nie możemy też zapomnieć..

Poland, a recent former Russian governorate, invades the Ukrainian SSR in 1920 and occupies Western Ukraine which results with the deaths of 40,000 Russian POWs. Some years later, in 1934, Poland is one of the first nations to sign a non-aggression treaty with Nazi Germany and occupies the Czechoslovak province of Zaolzie in 1938 whilst Hitler annexes the Sudetenland. Now given this context, we know that Poland is later invaded itself and fully occupied. However in 1944, 600,000 Soviet soldiers are killed for her liberation. 600,000! That's 30 times over the number of Polish victims in Katyn. After the war, the Russians reconstruct the entire country. Maybe now you can see why people in Russia rightfully call it a liberation!
The Poles, as a nation, have a very short memory. If it was not for the Red Army, the entirity of Poland would be a big mass grave.
