I like how the lion on some of the early versions is hanging back not in the mood..."yeah I dont feel like roaring..you got a problem with that!!" This is a good example of the use of connotation as a way to build brand recognition. The lion being an exotic animal and a symbol of wealth and power yet also from the circus. Its the preeminent symbol of wealth, adventure, and entertainment...connecting references stretching through time to ancient Rome and gladiators.. The lion symbol is also the guardian at the gates of the dream estate watching as you pass through into the land of dreams made for the dreamers created by "the dreamers of the dream."
I like your description of why a lion was used for MGM. It's much more fascinating than the actual reason: an homage to the studio chief's alma mater, Columbia University.
FUN FACT: The word "Goldwyn" is a combination of the founders of Goldwyn Pictures (the people behind the lion)' last names, Samuel GOLDfish and Edgar SelWYN. The former would later change his last name after the company.
one of Goldwyn's descendants, John Goldwyn who is now openly gay had a daughter with Colleen Camp who played a stripper in Apocalypse Now (Harrison Ford aka Han Solo was in that), Camp's dad was the brother of my great grandma on my mom's maternal side
Amazing logo history as always! A LOT of these logos are recognizable and I remember a lot of them as a kid during my time in the logo community about 3 or 4 years ago! My favorite lions are Jackie and Leo, and my most favorite logos from MGM are the 1st, 3rd, 9th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th logos! I'll watch your logo variations video!
I was surprised that the early versions of the logo don't have sound. But, that makes sense because they were silent films! When they started doing talkies, suddenly the lion needed to roar! I remember when I put an MGM movie on as a kid, there would be silence and then the lion would roar REALLY LOUD because we turned the volume up too high and we would scramble to turn it down before the movie started.
10:56 The first appearance of the 1982 roar track, which served as the basis for several remixes of said roar track over the years, most notably the 1995 version. And the 1995 roar track is still in use today.
Brilliant logo history of MGM, Fabian bro!!!! It's definitely one of your best updated logo histories so far. And also, MGM is one of my biggest favourites out of the "Big Six", because of it's unique logo design, especially with the lion on it!! Aww!! My favourite lions from MGM would definitely be Slats, Telly, George and Leo. But other than that, if I did pick a favourite, then my most favourite logos from MGM would definitely be all of them (my most favourite being the 1st logo (Goldwyn Pictures), 4th logo, 14th logo and the 15th logo). But like as always, awesome logo history Fabian bro and keep up with the awesome work!!!! :D :) ;)
Thanks Dylan bro!! This is one of my favourite logo histories of all time and it's also one of my favourites of the classic "Big Six" film studios. I can't believe MGM still uses the same design for their logos since Goldwyn Pictures designed it in 1917!! My most favourite lion is Slats, he's so cute. :-3 Thanks for watching Dylan bro! :-D
Apparently the Metro Pictures logo used a Bird instead of a Lion for their mascot (Goldwyn Pictures was using the Lion mascot until the company merged with Metro Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures the latter used an Eagle as that company’s mascot)
Liking the update! The CGI lion will take getting used to, but the new logo is pretty cool! I like the English slogan that shows before it turns into the traditional Latin phrase. Good luck with your project, too!
I'm a logo designer, I love lions (and all cats big and small), and I'm fascinated by sound recording and cinematography. You did an outstanding job of presenting the evolution of a fascinating logo. (Where's the kitty cat for MTM Studios - enjoying a saucer of milk?)
That's MGM Cartoons not MGM Studios... keep getting comments like this. -_- However, MGM Cartoons is in my list for future videos so don't worry, that video will include that variant.
@@TR3XProductions1stChannel Don't forget to include the wild "Tiger Rag" lion from cartoons as The Early Bird Dood It Blitz Wolf, and Chips off The Old Block
@@TR3XProductions1stChannel Thank you for this video, especially in providing stamps as to which variant pertained to an era. Other than MGM Cartoons, think you could please do one for the times the logo was altered for laughs like in Crocodile Hunter: Collison Course and Robocop 2014?
When I was little, the MGM lion was the main reason I watched Tom and Jerry and the other MGM cartoons and movies, funny how it was the logo I was interested in and not the cartoons. I think that's why lions are my favorite big cat, because of MGM.
Fantastic history TR3X. With regards to the 10th logo, this associates me most for 2001: A Space Odyssey, and a version of this particular logo is used by MGM's resorts chain. I'm pretty sure the old Milton Keynes Lions basketball club used that logo as well. Regarding the 15th logo, has anyone noticed that when Leo roars, his head momentarily pops out of the Ars Gratia Artis frame? Their new logo is great, but I wonder what they will come up with in three years time for their 100th Anniversary...
For MGM's 100th anniversary, one of the 0s should be the filmstrip with Leo or a newer lion, and either have 1924 on the left and 2024 on the right where the Trade Mark positions are, or a blurb on the bottom of the big 100 logo that says: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer "A legendary roar since 1924".
When I ever I hear the MGM lion or logo, I always think of James Bond, because James Bond is like a lion ready to strike. And the best secret agents movies come from MGM. And I’m glad James Bond and MGM has been bought by Amazon.
I do wonder, would it be possible to modify the MGM logo for a future Bond movie where instead of a lion, Bond walks up to the circle in the logo formed by the film reels, then faces the screen, and shoots it?
The once mighty MGM, known for colorful music as and widescreen epics, the studio that launched careers of Garland, Gable, and others, is now reduced to films like Child’s Play, RoboCop, the Bill and Ted Trilogy, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
Many may not like it. But I ❤ it. I also heard that Warner bros. and DreamWorks also updated theirs. If you can find them, can you do those videos(updated)?

The older one looks like he was about to sneeze.
The early versions are unintentionally funny, the lion looks confused, like he's looking around for someone to give him his cue 😂
The first lion in the Goldwyn logo looks surprisingly cute!
