went to see this film at the qft in belfast with my friends. a middle aged woman with tears in her eyes came up to us at the end of the film and told us abt how she loved the book when she was a little girl and how this adaptation made her cry at the end. although i found it slightly strange that this lady had come up to us (probably because we were the only teenagers there as the rest of the theatre was filled with mainly old ppl haha, also i think she worked there) i thought that it was amazing how well ghibli can make it's audience feel emotions with something as simple as animation. i'm pretty sure that if a book i loved as a kid was adapted into a ghibli film, i'd cry at the end of it, too. seeing my childhood memories come to life in an artform. ghibli had that special touch to their films, they stirred emotions and memories so well in their audience it was almost like magic.

When Marnie Was There was my "first" Ghibli movie. Actually, my first was Spirited Away, but I watched it as a kid and barely remembered anything about it before watching this film, so I consider WMWT my first Ghibli flick. Both are amazing movies, but I found this movie much more touching, in my opinion, because I related to the protagonist more.
