Just wanted to add, the necessity for growlights is generally a myth if you are on a budget. Normal LED in the cold/daylight spectrum (3000-6000K) work perfectly fine, at least for green/foliage plants. All white light has all wavelengths, and LED have higher blue lengths (foliage growth) with lower red, which can be adjusted with added brightness or duration.
I would guess some families of plants really do need full spectrum light, and some benefit better with it.

That has been my experience as well.. you need to measure that each plant is getting the amount of lux it requires, other than that my plants have done super well under normal bulbs 3000k to 6500k as you mentioned

I live in Indiana and overwinter my plants in the basement. I use the inexpensive shop lights that are between 5000 & 7000 lumens. You can plug them end to end like Christmas lights. They're not very pretty but you would be surprised how well my plants do. I also run a fan and my basement is a little damp. About the end of May I will take them outside to a covered porch. These shop lights cost between $15 to $30 in the big box home improvement stores.

You could spray paint the silver on the lights to add some character to the light vs looking so industrial. Rustoleum high-heat paint would work wonders. Painting might help them blend into the environment as well.

I never used grow lights up until a couple years ago…I have a lot of windows so that helps, but in the winter it can get chilly. I already had a couple table lamps with an adjustable arm that I used feit led grow lights in, and noticed plants seemed much happier💚 I place plants on an old painters ladder in front of my s facing window with sun lovers and aim the lamp towards them. 👍I grow veggies from seed and took advice from another channel purchased a couple cheap led shop lights, mounted them on an old potting bench and it’s been a game changer for seed props! I also put some houseplants near that set up and also noticed great progress on some plants that were struggling. For sure lights are key…thanks for sharing your light journey with us.

Thank you for this video. I have the cheap purple led strip for 2 years now, not much of a natural light in the corner where my plants are. My plants kind of surviving but not growing much, so we decided to add an ordinary white led strip (not growing light) and since we put it I see that my plants are loving it, ficus for example have a new growth. So I think the combination of these two are enough, will see in the future. That's my experience for now.

I have 2 of the basic amazon double gooseneck lights. One i have had probably 3+ years now, the other just over 2 years. No issues out of either. Light 1 had a bulb go out, but ordering a new bulb was a sinch. That said, mine are the basic lights. Just individual on/off switches, no dimmer, no built in timer and not usb plug. I paired them with Kasa wifi power strips (I also have fish tanks). The 6 plug strip tells you all sorts of info about electricity usage. So maybe sometimes, less options is the way to go.

Thanks for the advice! I have some amazon clip lights, and they are ok but I noticed that they weren't suitable for plants that want a lot of light. I had some succulents and they etiolated badly despite 12 hours of these LED lights for the winter (I had them in an east window as well). I ended up giving up on succulents because I couldn't keep them nice looking and it was too easy to overwater them with our lighting conditions. I put the amazon lights on my lower light tropicals instead; I'm crossing my fingers they will be sufficient.

I highly recommend NOMA Full Spectrum LED Grow Bulb, BR30 from Canadian Tire.
It has a nice warm glow. Pretty affordable too at C$8.49. I bought two of those, one in my living room attached to an IKEA Havsris pendant lamp.
I also like the SANSI grow light bulb in 10W which I attached to an IKEA floor lamp. This one has a cooler light but more powerful. I'm pointing it to my newly bought monstera hoping it will grow some new leaves.
My first grow lights were those bendable ones with 4 arms also with clamp from Amazon. I find them ugly and they don't produce enough light. I returned it when I got my grow bulbs.

For under a shelf or in a cabinet, look at full spectrum LED aquarium/vivarium lights. They are reasonably priced and can be mounted fairly easily on most surfaces. I have several mounted under glass shelves with velcro strips, liked to a timer so I don't have to fiddle with them at all. I think mine have have been installed for 5+ years, on for 12+ a day and still going strong.
I also have some of the gooseneck ones but I bought the fitting and the bulbs separately. Again, they're on a separate stand alone timer and are doing fine. I did buy one with the lights and the timer built in but it failed after a year or so.

It is difficult to know which lights to buy on Amazon since they are almost all made in China. GE does still make some grow lights but they are all made in China as well but at least you recognize the name brand. You do need to have a lamp to hold their bulbs. With the prices of everything going up it can be difficult to decide which type to get.
I have bought quite a few Barrina grow lights and they have done well for me. I use their under the shelf type lights since I have a six shelf plant stand and some others. Barrina has different types of lights like warm or white lights and various full spectrum lights. With some you can adjust how much light they put out.
I have been looking for a grow light lamp that will sit on a table that I have several plants on. There is no way to clamp lights on this particular type of table so it is going to have to be something that can stand on it’s own. It also has to be over two feet tall.
So far I am pleased with what have purchased on Amazon but do your homework before buying. Reviews can be unreliable and there are some people that could not find their way out of a paper bag on there so watch out. Once you find someone that you can rely on (mostly) try to stick with them.
I did get one bad one (so far). It had absolutely no type of brand name on it. Not even the fake sounding type of name that most have. I needed a smaller light for a succulent in a smaller pot. The light was the right size and only cost $10.00. Some people liked it in the reviews and some did not. I decided to risk it and ended up regretting it. It had a short in the switch and I had to waste my time going to the UPS store to return it. Was not happy about that one.
It is also a good idea to have a light meter that is made for plants to check to see if your are actually getting the type of light that the grow light manufacturer said you would get. There is a wide range of light meters but what you need is usually under $30.

That gorgeous alocasia cuprea (?) on the right has me completely distracted 😂 I live just north of Seattle and the combination of clouds and low eaves on our house mean I need lots of plant lights. After tons of YT research, learning that white LED light is mostly all the same, I settled on $17 30W nice-looking shop lights from Home Depot. I have 6 throughout my living room and kitchen, hung with strong, clear line from the ceiling to make them a little less conspicuous. Would I prefer Soltech track lighting instead? Absolutely! But I have limited money, which I'd rather spend on plants. I also found my my $40 light meter to be really helpful when I set them up, so I have an idea of how much light everything gets.

do you use light meter to make sure each plant is getting its light requirement? i have plants that require 200 fc and my grow lights are not putting out that much according to the meter

What grow lights are for specific plants, orchids, hoyas ?

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  Год назад

It's not necessarily the type of growlight for plants but the distance you have the light from a plant. For high light plants the light needs to be fairly close and obviously the opposite for lower light ones

    • @EverythingPlants

They seem to mysteriously switch brand names and etc so they are always 'unavailable'. Plus, I no longer recommend them as every single one I've had either stopped working or broke in some manner. If you are looking for a gooseneck light, check the description of my newer videos and the links to my Amazon accounts are there. I have the sansi gooseneck lights listed there and are SO MUCH BETTER

I use several of the clamp type lamps with the Feit bulbs. I'm very happy with the results and the versatility.
I spray painted the "trumpet" part of the clamp lamps with matte black paint, and it definitely improved their appearance.
I also bought some matte black hanging lamps from IKEA, and the Feit bulbs are completely hidden by them.

Fungus gnats love moist soil. If you notice them then I like to bottom water my plants and let the top of the soil dry out. That alone will reduce the numbers. I've also used predatory soil mites that eat the larvae (grub grenade is the brand) and I know some people use mosquito dunks

I highly recommend the Soltech grow lights. I have 2 large aspect and 1 vita (w/pendant) grow light. Personally, I would get the large aspect vs the small aspect as you can always put the light higher but will effectively always have more light with the large. I would also recommend getting the aspect over the vita. The vita bulb is very heavy (for a light bulb) and really only functions well in large heavy duty lamps. The vita will not work well in a small nightstand lamp as it just tips over. Don't cheap out on your grow lights, some just look plain awful and you will be disappointed. If you can't afford a quality grow light, you also probably can't afford plants. Put the money into making your plants thrive vs having more plants that don't thrive.

    • @EverythingPlants

Despite your setup, it is actually 0% your fault that the tall light is wobbly. You don't have to be a physicist to see that the base is completely insufficient. You can probably attach it to a larger wood base, though it would take work to make it look nice.

Great info...thanks for sharing. Another "in between" option are the Soltech light bulbs (called Vita) - still pricier ($60 ish and they do have sales thru the year) than the average Amazon variety, but the quality is super. And my plants just go crazy under them. They can be put in almost any light fixture, so you're not limited to that industrial look of the clamps. I've found attractive, inexpensive hanging fixtures to put them in and use plant or shelf brackets to hold those - that sort of mimics the look of the Aspect (which I did indulge in as a Christmas present 😉). All that being said, we all do want to put our money into the plants themselves, so Amazon has nothing to worry about! Thanks again for keeping it real.💚🪴💚
