- A rarely seen documentary from 1979 following Robin Cousins' progress through the 1979 season, culminating at the World Championships held in Vienna. Lots of great, never before seen footage and backstage glimpses. This was shown prior to the opening ceremonies for the Torino Winter Olympics in 2006. Apologies for the aspect ratio but it was broadcast this way. Enjoy!
And even after 40 years Robin we are looking back and saying - you are still the best!!
That guy has the longest legs and the hugest jump in the history of figure skating. When he throws that working leg forward, one never knows if he ever lands back on earth. Such a handsome Celtic face with a very becoming blush. Was fun to see his parents - they could not have been more proud!
I attended dance classes at same studio with Robin Cousins in Denver pre-1980 Olympics. A ballet soloist, I had never seen a tall white man jump like Robin could. He asked me to go for pizza once after a class. My then boyfriend, was not amused. Wish I had seen Robin onstage in Cats in London's West End.
All these years later back here in the Deep South of New Zealand - I’m so thrilled someone has shared these on RUclips. Loving every minute of watching this amazing and oh soo elegant ice skater ❤️

I love the section of John Curry performing figures to music, the foundation of all skating moves. Never an ugly line or body position, the young hopefuls today could do worse than to study this
I had such a crush on Robin Cousins. I remember watching him on TV in the Winter Olympics when I was young, skating to Don't Stop Till You Get Enough. I remember it so clearly. He was gorgeous, and so so wonderful.
Lyall Blanco I used to go skating at the same rink as him, I'd go really early in the morning. to avoid the crowds...there would be no more than 15 people at most. I did meet him. He even showed me how to backwards properly lol I was even on one of his documentaries. iv come on here to see if I can find it...

Everyone is going nuts for the triples and quads but Robin's singles are out of this world for height and elegance. So beautiful!
Such Grace and Elegance , the most beautiful skater on the eye ! The best of his era , by an absolute mile ! And for me , one of the best ever !
How much this sport has changed over the years. I’m not sure if it’s for the better. Has the beauty of it been lost in the never-ending quest to jump higher and rotate faster? Of course it’s exciting to watch most of the men these days land quadruple jumps in dashing style. But the long lines of simple elegance and grace as well as the moments of pure joy are still appreciated by many, me included. 😊
The artistry and personal style have been lost in the quest for quads and hyper-technicals.
This was some of the best skating of the 70s/80s! This is the way it should have been done! (some 30 years later...)
Why is not like this anymore? Without taking them out any merit, I do not like male skaters of today. I see they jump and do difficult things, but they are not GRACEFUL. They do not move me as these guys do. Ice skating used to be artistic, has it lost its soul? It happens the same with gymnastics, today they are not elegant and graceful as Nadia Comaneci, for example. Why? What have happened? It’s sad to lose Beauty.
He was the best. His jumps were so high and so fluid. His spins were amazing. Spins are now a lost art. Spins are an after thought with today's skaters and it shows.
Actually, under the rules of the last few years, spins are just as important as the jumps - even more so at the lower levels. The difference is, (like all of it) the rules are now very strict with the Elements. What is missing is the freedom and artistry. For instance, the number of jumps and spins are proscribed by the level you are at.
No-one today over a certain level would do an open axel because this would be wasting the marks you could get for a jump-element. Quads, of course, carry the highest marks - but only towards the top. If you do a jump that is HIGHER than the level you are at, it will not be marked. This is Universal whatever your level. Spins at the top-level need to be at a level-four ideally.
E.G., the rules state 'a spin with change of position, (you need all basic three positions for a full mark) with or without change of foot,' whereas in a Programme the rules also call for 'a spin with no change of position.' These rules are proscribed all the way through. The foot-work also carries as many marks as the other Elements; at the lower levels, even more.
E.G. It is possible at a low-level to screw up every jump and spin element and still win a Competition if the basic skating/footwork is good!
Spins have become 'who can do the most contortions'!
Just because you can get into certain spinning positions, doesn’t mean you should 😳😜😉 some look very ugly !
The best male skater ever, his performances are true dancing on ice. Would take this over the quad machines that we see today.
This was when skating was elegant, beautiful to watch and Robin was truly wonderful to watch. Long legs, excellent lines, huge jumps, I had such a crush on him and maybe I still do.
I remember this being on TV in the summer of 1979. Once again you do not disappoint floskate - a real gem. I like the bit where Robin was working with music for the following year and obviously he must have decided not to use the Spanish disco version of 'Don't let me be misunderstood' by Santa Esmeralda, opting instead for Belle de Jour/Dragons at Midnight/Orient Express/Paint it Black for his Olympic year long. In the end the outstanding Olympic performance to 'Don't let me be misunderstood' was by Denise Bielmann who won the ladies long and just missed an overall medal.

Thanks for posting this Floskate. Fascinating to see the figures competition, and how stopping at the top of a loop made him finish 13th in the final figure. It didn't look like a big mistake. And the short program. I remember in 1979 and 1982 the combination jump was a double flip and so many people would miss the triple toe loop that in the end the ISU stopped that combination after 1982 in the SP
He was the class of the field in 1980. His basic skating skills were just superb.

Does anyone have video of Robin, circa 1979/80, skating to Stray Cats Strut in exhibition at Richmond Ice Rink - face painted a bit like Ziggy Stardust. Have been searching for years.
What he achieved was nothing short of astonishing ! Learning to skate in that shithole which was Bristol Ice Rink ! ( I should know , I also skated there . ) Pam was a great first trainer for him though !

You know, I've been looking for that too. It WAS a great performance and very entertaining as well. I have been looking thru my collection and will post it if I can find it. This is the kind of skating that is fun to watch. Not this stuff we see today. I do realize that it's become a jumping competition because there are so many great skaters that compete so it's hard to determine the best in a way. Choosing the most artistic is tricky because it is so subjective.
Thank you Scooter - was beginning to think I must have been mistaken, but no-one could skate like Robin so it had to be him. My favourite male skaters were John Curry and Robin Cousins. I love some of the ones who came after, Orser, Petrenko, Browning etc. but John and Robin were in a totally different class.artistically.
