Absolutely fucking Magic work my friends!, well done!. as I have said before, most professional hobby powersupply rig I have ever seen!, some real hours and dollars put into that one!. Looking forward to the fun!.
Cheers mate..I will have to do a hundred decent vids to pay for it, all editing issues gone too :) new camera, computer, and pinnacle 17 works well for me, only just learnt about file types, I must thank you for your advice, hope to catch up with you shortly.
Brilliant !! Awesome set up and load test. Russian 10 kW lamp, just epic ! Hope you have some spare mains fuses too, just in case. Love to see your CL27.2 meter spin at 10 kW load. Nice Volt - Amp - Watt meters too. Great to see that you back in action again. Vacuum motors are always fun to burn out.
***** Aaaah, I'd like to see that as well.... Some proper satisfying loadwheel action. The meter won't know what hit it. :D If you do the experiment at off-peak time, you'll get the FUNN at a discounted price! :D It's bit of a shame that the meter didn't have a higher loadwheel characteristic. Your one only has 187.5 revs/kWh, so it'll need some hefty load to get the wheel to buzz around at a decent speed. A Ferranti FNE meter with 225 revs buzzes around quite nicely at 40A, but that's its loading capacity, which is probably why you don't have a Ferranti FNE-type meter..... You would've popped it by now. :D Still, at least your one has a higher loadwheel characteristic than our old L&G CL-147h, which only had a characteristic of 150 revs/kWh.... It needs some PROPER AMPS to get one of those to go around at a satisfying speed. I know once, I got a CL-147d-h up to about a guesstimated 100A ( with those two transformers you gave me! :D ) and the meter (which was rated for 80A) was starting to make tricky sounds. :D Speaking of which.... Your meter is also rated only for *80A* If you tug 100A through it for too long, things are going to start warming up a bit uncomfortably in there. :-O If you see a warm orangey-glow inside the back of the meter..... CUT THE POWER IMMEDIATELY...... SHE'S GONNA BLOOOOW !!!! :D Yes..... Some nice loadwheel action at Mr. Photon's house. You'd might as well while you still have a nice chunky loadwheel-based meter, because when they replace that, you'll get a little plastic-fantastic electronic box! Join the ranks of Rodalco2007.... Buuut security complaints apart, as always, I fucking love to see you blowing up things :D (Definitely needs a volume warning - for headphones users - at the end of this vid)
Love the videos. I've seen many. Chapter 2 looks exciting. May I make one teeny suggestion? A better microphone, or a microphone on your body would improve the listening quality greatly. Just don't run current through it. :)
You have a 100A single phase service at home? I always thought that this kind of service (high amp single phase) is not used in Europe except some very special occasions. So you've wired cables in parallel in this three phase plugs, correct? BTW the fact that despite 100A service and turning variacs one by one you still have that much light flicker is surprising: These are 25A variacs not really that big (but the ones that I use at work and are also 25A tend to occasionally trigger B25 circuit breakers at startup
In this vid, it can be seen that he has a 100A breaker in the consumer unit which has a C-curve on it, so it might permit the inrush associated with those three variacs. At a push, a domestic household can have a 100A service if the supplied-as-standard service cable can handle it, as some older properties won't. Our service fuse is 60A. Flash-the-cash, and the electric board would be more-than-happy to dig up the road and install a 200A service.... possibly 300A or even a 400A service. ......Even three-phase if the price is right! Years ago in the UK, there used to be this thing called 'Economy-7' which basically gave 7 hours of off-peak electric overnight (typically between 23.00 and 06.00 the next day) and the household would have had electric storage heaters and electric stored hot water, and when the whole lot thumps-on at 23.00 at night, the power consumption of the household could easily rocket up to 80A at 240v (approx 19.2kW) People even used to put plug-in timeswitches on their washing machines and tumble dryers so that they could operate them at the cheaper rate of electric, so that's another 4,000 watts of power on the overnight power consumption! :-O Economy 7 is still available, but not as popular anymore because of the price of electric compared to gas-fired heating. This is why Mr. Photon still has one of the old-style off-peak electric meters with the two kWh readouts on it. On my channel, you can see some more two-rate electric meters and even the chunky 80A timeswitches that would have been in use to operate all that power-hungry storage heating! Those timeswitches do make a nice satisfying CLONK when they operate. :D -BoomBoxDeluxe.
BoomBoxDeluxe So in UK single phase service is popular (well I should have guessed that from common use of 32A ring circuits), here in Poland you rarely see any service bigger than 5 kW as a single phase.
mibars My goodness, 5kW services went out here in the late 1950s. I have an electric meter which is rated for 25A (25A, 240v = 6kW total) and that is dated at approximately 1951. Meters after that model were rated for 40A+ -BBD.
BoomBoxDeluxe I've had 5 kW service in apartment and it had C25A fuse before meter, now I'm changing to 10 kW because I'll be switching from gas to inductive cooker and this will have 3x C20 on utility side. BTW it is a small flat build in 1950's :)
***** It really depends on what one needs and what one plans to have at their home as part of your electric bill is based on what you declare, here the most popular way for heating houses and cooking is gas and that requires lots of power. Right now I'm in a house built around 2000 and we have 3x 35A fuses before meter (not circuit breakers! Utility company explained me that they like their slow response curve as this provides quite reliable "selective action" combined with 16-20A B type circuit breakers at home so they don't have much calls for "power down after short circuit" ), I think we have 20 kW supply. Heating is gas, cooker is ceramic electric about 5 kW (yup, it's slow), there is one power consuming item installed (I recall 8 kW) but really rarely used and that's it for high power equipment. Our neighbour has "63A" written on his service box so I guess he either has some electric heater or maybe some snow melting stuff embedded into driveway. On the other hand I know a guite big new house with just 10 kW 3 phase supply (that will be 3x 16A protected by 3x 20A) since they will use gas cooker.
look at that carpet, i hope it's not too long before we see some burn holes in it lol glad to see you back in action!!! if i ever meet you i'm gonna have to buy you a pint, keep it up!!

Years ago in the UK, there used to be this thing called 'Economy-7' which basically gave 7 hours of off-peak electric overnight (typically between 23.00 and 06.00 the next day) and the household would have had electric storage heaters and electric stored hot water, and when the whole lot thumps-on at 23.00 at night, the power consumption of the household could easily rocket up to 80A at 240v (approx 19.2kW)
People even used to put plug-in timeswitches on their washing machines and tumble dryers so that they could operate them at the cheaper rate of electric, so that's another 4,000 watts of power on the overnight power consumption! :-O
Economy 7 is still available, but not as popular anymore because of the price of electric compared to gas-fired heating.
-BoomBoxDeluxe.
BoomBoxDeluxe So in UK single phase service is popular (well I should have guessed that from common use of 32A ring circuits), here in Poland you rarely see any service bigger than 5 kW as a single phase.
mibars
My goodness, 5kW services went out here in the late 1950s. I have an electric meter which is rated for 25A (25A, 240v = 6kW total) and that is dated at approximately 1951.
Meters after that model were rated for 40A+
-BBD.
Sweet. Would love to see some kind of ion engine from your variac.
The intro... It needs more arcs and sparks!
good work mate, incredible you can pull that much power from a 240 socket
Glad to see you back ;)
The Internet got boring without you!
Thank for showing us where you hook up that was neat.thank for the video.I been watching you video for a long time i see you always put safety first
look at that carpet, i hope it's not too long before we see some burn holes in it lol
glad to see you back in action!!!
if i ever meet you i'm gonna have to buy you a pint, keep it up!!
You've got 7x32A on single appliances like a gas cooker. But then again, you did rewire the whole house so everything would be belt and braces.
Im not too clued up on electronics, but I love watching your vids none the less, great stuff!
I assume the three Variacs are in parallel on the single phase supply? The meter must be spinning like a top!
You are absolutely insane... please don't ever change!
(Wish I could do that in my shop hee hee!)
Damn glad to see you back mate!
I'm waiting on you building the largest Tesla coil that's ever been seen in the UK!
Very nice power supply mate. Got a name for it yet?
looking forward to see big stuff get popped on it! Should do a car starter motor, or see just how fast you can get a washing machine to go
