    Would anyone be as so kind to have a bash at the maths for the approx temps please? At the point of failure (at the point I paused it) there was 501 Volts pulling 19.5 Amps, 9592 Watts. That must have been, and I quote "stupid 'ot".

      depending on what the heating element is made of, and the wire gauge, its most likely about 800degrees C. Give or take

    • @GreaterDeity
      @GreaterDeity 7 лет назад

      given that wire is coiled, what kind of induction is occurring in the wire has he increases the power? I'm not sure the direction of the magnetic unit vector from moving charge -- which way does it go in the coil? I was thinking that the changing magnetic field would induce a current in the bottom coil. :S

      Well nichrome melts at about 1400 degrees c, kanthal about 1500 degrees c. Both are often used to make heating elements. And we can safely assume it well and truly melted!

    • @nitebomber51
      @nitebomber51 7 лет назад +1

      Jon Edwards it was at 500 volts though, you have to remember that for every kilovolt it'll ark a centimeter if I'm not mistaken, and there was arking between the coils, so as much as some of it was melted, I'm inclined to believe that was from the arking and not the heat of the coil

      I found this regarding alumina ceramics (the type used in modern soldering irons up to, well, heaters)...
      "HTCC ceramic heating element is made up of high melting point metal heating material such as tungsten, molybdenum or molybdenum - manganese and 92-96% alumina ceramic substrates. The metal heating resistance slurry is printed onto the tape casting ceramic green body according to the design requirement, several layers of ceramic green body are then laminated together and is fired at 1500 ~ 1600 ℃ high temperature, with the aid of 4-8% sintering additive, to form the alumina ceramic heating element."
      I assume the bubbly mess was the substrate that the slurry is poured on. Maybe (just maybe) that the temps from the over heating made the ceramic even more brittle, and the energy from an initial arc allowed it to fracture and compromise the substrate - allowing it to bleed and melt.
      Still, HTTC is fired at 1500'C ~ 1600'C. **I know this isn't the same assembly**, but the material is now cheap as shit and wouldn't take long to adapt to a nichrome style wire wound assembly.
