    I love Gary as a rival because he's just a dick, that's it, it's so blunt and basic I loved it. As a kid you also had no idea when or where he'd show up for a rematch and chances are you didn't properly heal or switch out your team. Personally I think that's more engaging than rivals who just suck you off and praise you when you win. I think Wally was the last rival that really stood out to me I loves seeing his growth as the game progresed

    One thing to keep in mind is just how incredibly impressive Pokémon was for the original GB. People at the time felt handhelds could only do tiny games like Tetris or basic platformers like Marioland. Pokémon was absolutely massive and something that felt like it had absolutely no business being on the Gameboy. In size and options it felt on par with FF7 while usually the GB felt like a step below even the NES. Having such a massive overworld that absolutely dwarfed any RPG on the handheld and having 150 creatures that all were fully usable with their own typing and moveset was just mind blowing. In that way it felt even bigger than FF7 since every Pokémon was usable. Every Pokémon a boss had you could have.
    There also were so many secrets, fun glitches and especially such a heavy but fun atmosphere to it all. It was so different from the usual steampunk or medieval fantasy setting.

  • @lyncario5515
    @lyncario5515 2 года назад +43

    One thing about the sprites in Red and Blue (and Green) is that they were made while the pokemons themselves did not have their final designs, making it tricky for the pixel artist who did them. So yeah, that's the explanations to stuff like Golbat's tongue.

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 2 года назад +6

      Um, not exactly. Red and Green were made but then the designs were made into the famous illustration and then they made an enhanced version, blue. The original Pokémon red never came out outside Japan. Instead they took the Japanese blue version and took out a few Pokémon to split it up again. So it's kind of like instead of Ruby and Saphire. They took Emerald and made another split from that they also called ruby and brought that out.

    • @IgnitedQuils
      @IgnitedQuils Год назад +1

      Yeah like what MrMarnius18 said, Red and Green were made first; then Blue was made and released in October 1996. The Red and Blue we got was based on the Blue in Japan. They’re reskins of JP Blue but with the available Pokemon from JP Red and Green. Red and Blue were chosen as the International titles due to the US flag to appeal to us.

      The original Pokémon have the best designs. It's one thing gen 1 has never been surpassed in. Charizard is indeed somewhat overhyped but he is a really great design. Being cool and powerful looking but having just enough roundness to him to not appear too scary while still being simple and elegant. Almost all the gen 1 designs nail that balance of both threatening but cute. Creatures that look equally as natural cuddling up to as they look in pitched battle.
      Other Pokémon like Lapras, Snorlax, Sandslash, Eevee and more just work so well.

    One thing about gen 1's story that's nice compared to others is how simply connected it is. Who else would you fight at the end of your journey other than the person you've been butting heads with since the beginning? In the same way, there's few better ways to end a criminal organization than having them be a gym leader you need to defeat. It's not pure genius or anything, but these connections help tie in every plot point very well. And I don't think pokemon has really connected all these dots since. In gen2-4, the evil teams have almost nothing to do with the league and your rival doesn't go any further than victory road if that. Gen5 definitely had the best climax, but the rivals didn't change. Gen 6 was gen 4 again, similar with 7 (although you do fight your rival in usum, I haven't played them tho so I can't say much else) gen 8 does have you fight your rival in the "elite four" and his brother , and the climax for the evil team is right before the champion. But you were pushed away from the plot for pretty much the entirely of the rest. also they made the leader of team yell the 7th gym, but it isn't really an evil team and it's a guy you've never seen before.
    I think this is why there is such a disconnect for people between pokemon having a focus on the plot or gameplay. Gen 5 May have had arguably the best story, but it's still disconnected from the gameplay side overall and can leave players who just want to play the game frustrated. Infact, it can go beyond plot. Voltorb, despite how people make fun of it for being a ball, is a great piece of worldbuilding affecting gameplay. It's designed to be the rpg mimic, to catch people off guard when they think their grabbing an item but actually run into a monster. Sure, it's basic. But aside from amoonguss, what other pokemon has had worldbuilding affect gameplay in such an intense way? It feels like there's this mindset with pokemon where story and gameplay are separate things that need to be balanced when if anything, they can go together like cookies and cream.

    Gen 1 is iconic, and some of my favorite Mons are from here, but it is the definition of “growing pains.” FireRed & LeafGreen definitely made some improvements, but it’s still basic compared to every other generation.
    All the nostalgia-pandering to this Gen that’s been going on for the past decade hasn’t really helped either.

    • @lynxfresh5214
      @lynxfresh5214 2 года назад +7

      I subscribe to the popular theory that due to the overall subpar (At least compared to the other gens) reception of Gen 5 with Unova being the region least connected to Kanto, TPC/Game Freak decided to "play it safe" and go full Gen 1 mode in the future mainline games.
      *Gen 6: Is filled Gen 1 references (Sleeping Snorlax, Mewtwo, bird trio, etc), you get a free Kanto starter during the story and Calem/Serena originally come from the Kanto region.
      *Gen 7: Sun/Moon originally come from the Kanto region too, all the Alolan formes belong to Kanto mons and even more Gen 1 references (Adult Red/Blue, Team RR, Alolan forme Prof Oak, etc).
      *LGP/LGE: Self explanatory.
      *Gen 8: Shameless and open Kanto mons supremacy; A lot of Gigantamax forms went to Kanto mons, Meowth gets yet another regional form, Leon's ace is Charizard, Galarian forms for the bird trio, etc.
      Sure these days many fans are saying they enjoyed B/W as well as B2/W2 while also saying Gen 5 didn't deserve the hate it initially received but that's usually from a retrospective position.
      I know many fans are tired of the Gen 1 pandering but unironically appealing to both "Genwunners" and the normies makes TPC/Game Freak plenty of profits.

    I love how the major heists of Team Rocket can sort of be tied back to Gionvanni attempting to recapture Mewtwo by gaining access to rare fossil Pokemon, "super effective" Ghost types and the Master Ball. Its honestly not a terrible way to make a non linear story by having these elements just lightly connect to each other on a thematic level instead of any established continuity. Personally I strongly disagree with this as I felt that the non-linearity in both of the games led to very unbalanced levelcurves for both the wild Pokemon and the trainers. I'd even say that GameFreak has only shown how bad they truly are at designing non-linearity.
      Though I also believe that Pokemon's progression system doesn't really lend itself all that well to a non-linear approach without some MAJOR tweaks that neither Gen 1, Gen 2 or their remakes ever implemented.

    I think the best element about gen 1’s story and pacing is how it’s basically based around rival fights rather than gym badges like what would become the formula after. Some of it avoidable like the really bad glitches but others like Psychic running rampant and some types just getting next to nothing to work with are a real detriment. Still I'll never say gen 1's fame is undeserved as it paved the way for many more games to come.

    The thing with the rival, at least for me, was that he felt like a moving goal post you had to work towards. Yeah, I'll agree that some of us may be conflating him with Gary, and he does drop some helpful tips every now and then, but he is always one step ahead of you. Go into any gym, he's already been there and beaten it. Headed to the S.S. Anne? Somehow Gary is already chilling out with the captain. He's even at Silph Co. during the Team Rocket occupation. Still not sure why he was there. I suppose that point of always being one step ahead of the player on top of some of the more antagonistic lines he drops is what makes people look back on him fondly. They see a rival as someone to but heads with, someone that may simply be better than you but you still work your ass off to catch up to and eventually surpass. And again, this is just my opinion, but I don't really get that feeling from any of the rivals in the games later on.

    • @charlessegale6493
      @charlessegale6493 2 года назад

      While I don't disagree that a middle ground would be ideal, I'm 90% certain that the reason so many of us are clamoring for a proper jerk rival is because we haven't *had* a proper one in over 20 years. The closest we really got to that that I can immediately think of at the top of my head would be Bede, but Bede was also outweighed by and had to share center stage with Hop and Marnie who tend to fit the mold that every Rival has fulfilled since Gen 3. N from Gen 5 was really more of an antagonist via circumstance who pushed the protagonist due to differences in ideology.
      Compare that to the rivals in the first 2 Gens. They may have been simple, but hey worked for what they needed to do in games that were just as simple. For Gen 1, Blue/Green was *always* one step ahead of you and was always bragging about it. Beating him until the end where he finally comes to grips with the fact that *you* were the better trainer was most likely a conscious decision considering how this game was developed in an era where many JRPG protagonists were still silent so as to make you the player avatar.
      On the flip side, there is the rival from Gen 2. Silver straight up is a delinquent who not only talks down to you no matter what, but treats his Pokémon like dirt. Your journey runs parallel with his where he learns *The True Value of Friendship (TM).* His eventual acceptance of Pokémon as partners is even noticeable on ludonarrative level with his Golbat evolving into a Crobat, an evolution that's only possible with a high level of friendship.
      So, to reiterate, I do agree that a middle ground is a better idea overall. However, aside from maybe Bede, this franchise hasn't seen a proper jerk Rival for longer than many fans have been alive (outside of remakes, of course).

    It’s been kind of fun to watch challenge runners exploit the glitch associated with the boost given by the badges you collect. When your stats get adjusted, positively or negatively, the boost from your badges get applied again. Seeing Speed being increased by a decrease to Attack is pretty funny. Gen 1 was definitely busted.
    I think Gen 1 also rides on anime nostalgia for many people, myself included. I would play R/B/Y on my grey-brick Gameboy while watching the anime, which created a lot of positive associations back and forth. But as the video points out, the story is pretty flimsy overall (though Sw/Sh’s story is way worse, in my opinion). I still love this generation, but it definitely has its flaws~

    I certainly respect Gen 1 for kickstarting a series that I still whole heartedly enjoy even 10+ years after I was first introduced to it with Pokemon Pearl... but that is pretty much about it. I have little to no nostalgia for this region (though I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't in part due to the Gen 1-bias in recent gens) to the point that I get somewhat annoyed with how revered certain elements of it are (I will forever question why some people believe Lavender Twon is STILL the scariest location in Pokemon). I also don't think the design of the region is all that interesting. Sure, you can do gyms 4-7 in any order you like, but this also leads to the levelcurve of that part of the game being a little lacking (an issue that only became worse in Gen 2).
    And another reason as to why the Psychic type is so powerful in Gen 1 (something that was also carried over to FRLG) is because the Poison type is only surpassed by the Water type in terms of representation in Kanto (in part because a good majority of Grass types were also part Poison type). And sure, FRLG added in the Dark type, but there are literally zero Dark types available in Kanto so you can really only rely on its offensive coverage.
    And in regards to "the magic of Pokemon waning in recent years", while I do understand where that sentiment comes from, I wouldn't say I am personally affected by that myself... outside of its effect in other fans leading them to do stuff that makes me want to avoid them and enjoy the games by myself.

    Personally there are things I don't quite agree with that to me get overlooked by many people. When it comes to starters I agree Charmander is the hard mode choice, but in the case of Brock I'd argue any of them work with them due to the fact neither of Brock's rock Pokemon know Rock type moves, to me anyway if the typing you have or specialize in doesn't have moves to the rock/paper/scissors type weakness then effectively you don't really have much of an advantage unless things like stats/levels apply. In case of Brock's Pokemon not only do neither have any Rock type moves, but they have low Special, so despite Charmander not being effective you can still get past them, just not one sided like the other two. He does get walled by Misty though and goes even with Surge, which to me is right around the time his bad MUs start to fade.
    When I consider a starter (if I use them) you consider their effectiveness throughout, early game is an important note as other team members can help with that, but it also depends on what you have on your team or if you even have a full team mid game. Bulbasuar may be good against first three gyms, but every gym after that he gets pretty much walled when it comes to any Gym action until Giovanni and is really only effective against Bruno and goes even with Lorelei. He also has to contend with the fact Team Rocket members like to carry poison types, which many major fights consist of. Except the occasional Drowsee or Ratatta line. That's why Cyndaquil is the best in Ge 2 because it has the best stats most suitable for the game and good Matchups throughout.
    Also when it comes to types, people always complain how overpowered Psychic is (and sure it is) but nobody ever mentions that Normal was just as overpowered and had the same issues Psychic types did. Their only weakness fighting was severely underpowered, Submission was namely the only accessible fighting type move and does recoil damage, and the only Fighting type with a strong enough move that didn't cause recoil was Hitmonlee who was among the worst fully evolved Pokemon! In fact when it comes to the top threats of Gen 1 the top 3 mons are all Normal types consisting of Tauros, Chansey and Snorlax. And since Normal is often paired with Psychic they never had to worry about a fighting type KOing them. Hell even the strongest moves in the game were of the Normal type (Body Slam and Hyper Beam) alongside Psychic and Blizzard. That's also considering their often large movepools and Reflect neutering their Fighting damage since many Normal types carry high HP.
    If you ask me Fighting was just as bad as Bug types in Gen 1, even the best one isn't very good! I don't think the Ghost type would matter much if they were special, could hit Psychic or if they didn't have a Poison subtype, since their strongest move regardless was Lick, the issue was really just how the lack of a strong move type option. Like if Bug just had a more hard hitting move and more accessability it would be fine. You can even get more use out of mons like Venomoth or Pinsir than you could any Fighting type.
    There's also the fact Bug and Poison were supereffective against each other.

    Sorry to be that guy, but at 8:58, Fire actually DID resist ice (it is listed as so in Bulbapedia). Gen 1 had a glitch where if you were a multi type Pokemon, and you were hit with a move that one type resists but another type is weak to, it will bring up the text that that move is super effective. However, this is misleading as the move just does normal damage.

    I feel like Blue is a good rival simply because he's actually somewhat competitive, story-wise and character-wise. He's always one step ahead of you and isn't afraid to remind you of that, even if you beat him every time you battle. Hell, he becomes the champion before you do.
    Rivals after gen 2 became your best friend. Just someone to give tutorials, heal your team before story events (If I go in unprepared that's my fault, damnit, stop doing this), and tell you how strong you are at every opportunity. And now they're even picking the starter that's weak to yours, so they're rarely ever a challenge. Except May on route 110, always jumping you before you remember to heal...

    Mew was probably based partly on a fetus in utero, according to a lot of convincing theories. It's really obvious when you look at the original sprite from Red and Green, but I think it's definitely for the best that they toned down the fetus aspects of its design, while adding some more cat-like features to its face to make it look cute instead of objectively horrifying.

    The thing that bothers me looking back at Gen 1 that I think most people overlook is how useless Poison types were. The only type they were super effective against in Gen 1 was grass types, only all but 5 Grass type Pokemon in Gen 1 were dual typed Grass and Poison, and unsurprisingly, Poison resists Poison, so it only does normal damage to most of the Pokemon it's supposed to be strong against. And those other 5 Grass types I mentioned? Two are Eggsecute and Eggsecutor, who both have Psychic as their other type, which is a broken type in Gen 1 on the other end of the spectrum and also happens to be super effective against poison. And the final three are Paris, Parasect, and Tangela. None of which are particularly threatening, and the first two even have a dual weakness to both Fire and Flying, which are much better types anyways, and Tangela pretty much isn't even used by any trainer exept maybe Erika the gym leader, but again, the other two types I mentioned are better ways to take one out IMO.

    One thing I think gen 1 still did best was balancing effort and reward. Pokémon like Alakazam, Taurus, Chansey and Rhydon are very, very powerful but also a massive effort to get. Also the Pokémon designs are still the best the series has ever had. The spritework isn't the best but the incredible creative yet elegantly simple designs more than compensate.
    Really the gen 1 Pokémon designs are absolutely top tier. It's a big reason why it was such a massive success.

    Pokemon has been a big part of my life since the days I played red and blue, both competitively as well as from a game experience point. Gen 1 was not my fave gen either given all the issues that the games have back in the day it was fun for the time. It had a charm however that most modern games even pokemon games seem to lack and there is a part of me that will always long for that magic again. That said I will say that I find it funny that my fave generation right now is gen 8 as it has made so much head way that people seem to not want to acknowledge. Yes the controversies and such are a pain. They could have done more but I think most people are too hard on them given the time schedules, fan demands, and holiday rushes that for a group like gamefreak is a miracle that they can produce something like they do without complaining. Most of the people that complain about the issues with gen 8 are either unaware of all the gamefreak has to go through or they simply do not really care all that much. It is not like the days of gen one with things was much more simply with small sprites, a handful of sounds, and all that but now they have to make 3d models and custom animations. I know many even yourself are not exactly the biggest fan of the 3d movement, heck you once said that you wished they would of never went 3d given that it has gone downhill a bit sense that even if it was the most logical and needed next step in their franchises development. Pokemon is changing over time for a multi audience demo and has so much extra stuff that ones like zelda does not like card games and competitive scenes so the demand is going to be much more and given that they are going to have a smaller time that will make it harder to put out what we want without some sacrifices. Is it right to do so no but it is not something that they really can choose as they have a dagger to their throats so to speak. I do hope that someday they do recapture the magic they once had and with the given new entries maybe they can as they are showing more and more attempt at making the fan base happy but sadly only time will tell.

    “Gravity Falls” was meant to have three seasons (and Disney wanted that), but Alex Hirsch burnt himself out just making Season 1 and had to be convinced to finish the story, so he condensed the plans for Seasons 2 & 3 into one… this arguably made the second half better as a whole for its brisk pace, but perhaps neglected a lot of character development that standalone episodes would have granted. One of the biggest complaints I see for the newer games/generations is that the games are "too easy", and while I'll admit they aren't hard, I think the word people are actually looking for for the older games isn't hard but imbalanced. I love Generation 2 since I played the hell out of Silver as a kid, but I hate playing generations 3 and under because of many factors usually with the lack of a physical/special split being the main one. I don't like playing older Pokemon games because of not only the split, but because of a lack of options in both typings/Pokemon and moves. Not to mention things like Dragon typing being a thing because why not have a typing that had two options to beat it like itself and late game frailty? Dumb. There's balance and options and Pokemon can use the right moves for the right stat instead whatever was going on back then. But yeah I refuse to go back to imbalanced nightmare that has been affectionately called "harder" *rolls eyes*
    Generation 1 was the foundation for Pokemon and I can respect that, and while I love the complete mess that it is I don't think I could go back to that. It's in the past where it belongs. I'm thankful for newer Pokemon because Generation 1 has a lot of designs I just don't care for and the Fairy typing, but I can't deny what the original games did and I hope Pokemon learns to be better as Generation 9 comes around because I'm tired of the fatigue that this franchise is starting to show. Also tired of seeing missed potential. Game Freak can do better. The newer games aren't bad but could be better. But that's just my opinion but I'm sure someone will disagree with me because of reasons lol.
