Heya folks! Wow, the reaction to this has been pretty fun 😅I'm glad so many of you enjoyed. Considering how this has gone I've been contemplating covering the entire series on my Patreon while keeping the episodes you're all recommending to RUclips (thank you by the way for the extensive lists, top work ♥). I know that sounds like I'm keeping the whole series behind a pay wall but I know I couldn't keep up with the workload of continuing two series concurrently on my channel week to week and still keep my channel what I want it to be and what I enjoy most.
I would honestly never have watched Buffy in my own time without having delved into it in this way, so I figured this was a way to experience the show in a bite size format and engage with those that love it, and you have all delivered on that end so thank you! I totally understand the comments of 'you've ruined it for yourself!' but for me I would never have had even this experience without making the video, so from my perspective this has been really enjoyable and something I wouldn't have had otherwise, which I'm very grateful for.
All that said, thank you everyone for engaging so much. I've been recording today so I haven't replied to a lot of comments but I've seen them all. I hope you all have a great Christmas, and I hope to revisit the Buffy universe soon ♥
Edit - for anyone coming to this video you should know that I'm covering the entire series on YT. Check out my channel page to see where I'm up to 😊

And depending on your plans you could always edit it down for youtube in the future, maybe? Either way you've got my sub, and a follow on Patreon if you decide to do the full show!

You're a lot of fun to watch! 👍 As I'm sure you've been told, _Gingerbread_ is NOT the midpoint of the show. Good news though: First of all it _was_ a good episode to watch and it was far enough into the series to give a fair impression of how it had progressed. Secondly the two episodes at the actual midpoint, season 04 episodes 16 and 17 would have been _terrible_ choices. Ep 16 was a "concept" episode and is not at all representative of the series and Ep 17 would have need far to much context to follow. So...... Good job with the math! 😉👍
I'm going to message you on Instagram with some _(hopefully helpful and new)_ information about the show.

Don't be too concerned with having "ruined it" by doing this, I know a lot of people in the fandom enjoy seeing people react to it with no experience whatsoever and are jealously guarding every piece of spoiler that might come but honestly that's a bit of a tall order today, and in my opinion not such a detriment. Aside from having been aired 25 years ago, people come from different places and have different experiences. I grew up with friends who were obsessed with the show, which made me resent it and not want to watch it, all the while watching the spin off series, absolutely loving it, not even realizing it was connected. Years later when I _did_ learn of the connection and wanted to go watch Buffy I already knew so much - It was still awesome and amazingly written, it still took my by surprise and I totally got on board the hype train that my friends have been riding since junior high.

Welcome to the Buffyverse! Time to join the crowd and say, please just watch the whole show. This, along with its spin off, is my favorite show of all time. Nothing has overtaken it and that's coming from someone who would count Breaking Bad and Mad Men as fighting for 2nd and 3rd place. I promise you the whole journey is worth it. Something this show can take credit for is really figuring out the balance between season long (and that's 22 episode seasons) arcs and monster of the week episodes. It actually coined the term "Big Bad" to mark the difference between the season-long enemy and the MotW baddies. The show also deserves credit for really figuring out how to do dramedy. There are huge dramatic /tramatic moments/arcs in it's run and also some of the silliest, funniest, joyful moments and episodes. It's a very special journey and we as a fandom genuinely love going on that journey with new people. You are a lot of fun to watch, funny comments, thoughtful analysis, I really think you would enjoy it and so would we. Here's Hoping!🤞

You’d asked if there was a switch from handling monsters to more focus on relationships, and my answer would be that they keep it pretty even throughout the series. The later episodes are more rich in the character interactions just because there’s a history with the characters.
In terms of what they deal with from season-season, there’s always an Evil that’s deemed the “Big Bad”, and the plots for the character arcs are spliced with trying to take on those challenges. There’s a whole season in which “Life” was deemed the Big Bad of the season-depression, loss, humanity, self-loathing, money issues… a lot dealt with in a single season. And that same season dives into the ethics of taking down ‘humans’ who are evil, in a really intense way.
I love this series with my whole heart. I hope you watch the full thing when you have time.

Buffy is regarded as one of the best shows of all time by many critics and fans alike. This show tackles so many things from relationships, depression, addiction, pressures of growing up, and much more. It has a lot of thing many people can relate to. And of course we have monsters and an overarching bad guy each season that Buffy and her friends have to defeat, and post season 1 has some AMAZING fight choreography which the show is highly praised for, especially for it’s time on television. You will hear a lot that season 1 is the weakest season, which it is because the show was a mid season replacement with only 12 episodes and had little to no budget for that first season. But it is a great introduction season for the characters and to get a glimpse of what the show will be like. Season 2 forward the show picks up a lot. A couple episodes I recommend watching are “Season 2 Episode 22,” Season 5 episode 22”, and “Season 6 Episode 21”.

All good episodes, but most of them lose their impact if you only watch the show sporadically. Like "Graduation" will lose most of the emotional impact if you're not familiar with Faith's character and her journey. Same goes for "The Gift" and "Seeing Red", those episodes stayed with us because we spent time with the characters, I don't think they would hit as hard if you skipped the key moments that set them up. IMO, stand-alone episodes like "Lie To Me" and "Hush" are better for casual viewing because can be enjoyed without context.

18:33 Well to be honest, one of Buffy's greatest strengths as a show is that is flows really well and is very much reliant on good character development. I know at this point in the show (3x11) it may not exactly look like it, but literally go one episode backward or forwards and you have epic character development plot you probably would have not been able to truly appreciate.
I would definitely encourage you to try reacting to the whole show, one ep at a time but if you are really set on doing "highlights" then the only one I would actually recommend is 4x10. Anything else will be lost on you without context (in my humble opinion)

4x10 Hush (Doesn't require much context, Emmy award winner, but already reacted by many first-timers)

** Season 1 is considered the weakest. 2, 3, and 5 are the most popular ones, 6 is the darkest and most controversial one. 7 is not as liked.
** Season 1 is the high-school years, 4-5 college and adulting, 6 full-on adult life, 7 goes deeper into the slayer lore.
** Becoming (two-parter) and The Gift are series finales (2 and 5), while great I don't think you'll appreciate them as much if you don't watch the episodes that come before.
** NOT Once More With Feeling. You'll need SO much context for it and it's hard to focus on everything at once as it is.
Also, NOT The Body, like OMWF it's not a "regular" Buffy episode.

Also still made even better in context of the rest of season 2, but it's up there with the really renowned Buffy episodes for its merit on its own too!
But yeah, it would be a pretty great one to do this format of reaction in just in the sense that the pilot and finale are both fantastic 😊 for a middle, rather than something from season 3 I'd definitely go with Epiphany- it's close enough to the midway point, and it's an absolutely crucial turning point that gives us the profound core thesis of the whole show

Gingerbread was very monster-of-the-week compared to a lot of episodes around this one. So it was good for your 3-episode-watch to understand, what is going on. But there were season-long arcs (and longer ones) with earned resolutions. BTW the better version is the 4:3 version. In the 16:9 version they mostly cut the upper and lower part of the frame. To hide the loss in resolution they blurred the image and mishandled colors and brightness - some nicht scenes look as bright as day. If you watch another Buffy episode, you could try to get the original version with the full image (4:3).

The remake is actually even worse than what you're describing here. In addition to all you described, they didn't just take the resolution that was sent out to TV stations: the resolution the show was filmed on was actually larger, and the crew simply filmed in such a way that they would get the shot composition they wanted once the cuts were made. So they would have little bits of equipment or scenery that would be cut out later in the original shot. When they went to make the remaster they picked *the original film* to work off of, which means the remaster is all sorts of fucked up because they didn't bother to cut out the things the original crew hadn't meant to have in the shot.

I’ve rewatched this show a lot and I can safely say it’s brilliant. All the development in characters especially spike. Spike went from evil vampire without a soul going to town to kill Buffy to slowly falling for her giving him the motivation to gain a soul. Another favourite plot of mine is Dawn (the young girl with the brown hair) Dawn came in season 5 ep 1 as buffys sister, quite a shock as buffy never previously had a sister. Dawn was created for reasons I won’t spoil but it’s honestly a really well written plot. Anyways I’ve gone on a tangent and hope you watch the show!!

TV Guide once listed the 'best' TV shows (this was before Sopranos, Game of Thrones, and Breaking Bad.) Buffy came in 39th, which is not too bad. Above it were shows like MASH, Cheers, 60 Minutes. None of them had the humor, suspense, horror, or erotica that Buffy had. The twists, the jaw-dropping endings, the fight choreography! Buffy is still fun after all these years. They practically invented the serial/arc of a continuous story, but in standalone chunks. That takes so much writing skill. I have often said that yes, Buffy was the most realistic show to ever air. In the midst of the monster fun were true messages of adult life. The core audience would be teen girls, but it never ever talked down to them. It loved them, and taught them truths in some not-so-gentle ways.
Many episodes require context -- if you are going to just dip in, do NOT start with 'The Body', or 'Once More With Feeling' (pivotal, great episodes - I hope to see you react to them someday.) The easy recommendation for another dip would be 'Hush'.

Awww, I thought you were going to go halfway by episodes, which would have been a Season 5 episode called "Checkpoint" (144 episodes in the show, divide it in half and you get 72, which is Season 5, episode 12), which would have been really good for you to watch. Still, Season 3 was good.

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles Год назад

Oh, but a single episode you should ABSOLUTELY watch? That's easy. "Once More With Feeling". It kind of popularized the "musical episode" thing, which a lot of shows have copied, but none have gotten to the level that Buffy took it. BtVS managed to do it in a way that it didn't feel *outside* of the rest of the story arc of the season. I mean, you might need a little recap of what had happened before to give yourself some context with the various subplots of the episode, but it's still HUGELY fun and yet also rather deep.

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles Год назад

They did comics for what happened next in Buffy's life and, with the exception of a really shaky first "season" of comics (while they worked out what did and didn't work when it comes to transferring a TV show to comic form, rather than the other way around), they were really good and really allowed Buffy to continue to mature and come closer to her "cookie" self.

So I haven't seen anyone else recommend this in my brief glance and the comments but Buffy actually has a spin-off called Angel. Which as the title suggests follows Angel, it is 5 seasons long and starts after the third season of Buffy.
I think it would be a fun idea to do a similar type of reaction for the first episode, a middle episode and the last episode. In the same style as this. It would definitely be an interesting video when taken in context with this one.
As for Buffy episode recommendations as many have said it is difficult to do. Many episodes build on the rest, like any good tv show should.
Some funs ones are as follows:
4x10 - Hush is a classic stand alone episode and is one a number of people watch to get a feel of the show.
3x06 - Band Candy is a really funny stand alone episode that isn't too heavy.
2x03 - School Hard is the episode the show finds itself and introduces two fan favourite characters.
If you are wanting to see THE stand out I'd recommend:
5x16 The Body is one of the most harrowing episodes of TV I've seen and is probably why Buffy stays in my head.
The video was great and I hope you do more. It is always fun to see some discover a cult classic.

The middle episode would be episode 72 - So that would be "Who Are You?" - an episode that would be totally incomprehensible without seeing "This Year's Girl", which would be totally incomprehensible without an understanding of the events of season 3. Gingerbread is a much better choice because it's a MOTW episode rather than something that relies on past events and relationships.

I'm so glad you're considering reacting to the whole show. I'm one of those people who've been with the Buffyverse shows for over 20 years. I've seen all 7 seasons well over 100 times (why, yes. i am autistic! 😁). Obviously it hurts me down to my footnubs (aka toes) that you watched it this way but I'll live🤔😉. What hurt the most, though, was that the middle episode you randomly chose was Gingerbread. 😭 Not a horrible episode in the context of the show but it's surrounded by absolute gems which you had the bad luck of missing. You just didn't get the best roll of the dice, that's all. But I really enjoy your style and delivery so if you do react to the show, I'll show up, watch faithfully, and hit Like on every video. I've also subbed. Fair enough? ☺️

"Who is that voice? Is he in the show?" Haha. That makes me feel old. No, he is not in the show; that was the WB's voiceover actor who did all the promos for ALL the shows. This was the first actor I believe, whose name I actually do not know. After him, we got the now-famous Hal Douglas, who would go on to do loads of 90s/00s trailers. WB fans quickly came to know our voiceover talents. 😆

Gingerbread was a little cheesy, but it had so much substance in it if you think about it. I think you got it, I also think making Joyce influenced by the demon kids lessened the impact of the story, but I guess they had to, so they could do a monster of the week.
The finale was kind of low key, but I wouldn't say it deteriorated. Characters getting more to do in the latter part of the series run was an addition, not a detriment to the show as a whole. This was fun, thanks for the jokes and the dancing, it was great!

Loved your commentary on this - you seem to be very observant and picked up on a lot of things I wouldn't have expected you to catch! Part of what makes Buffy so great is that the finale gives us satisfactory closure on Buffy's arc - from 'reluctant chosen one' to 'choosing her own fate', and I think watching the first and last episodes really highlights that. Like a few other people have said, 'Gingerbread' isn't actually the midpoint, but it's a good average episode and Angel's 'why we fight' speech in that episode perfectly sums up the overarching themes of his spin-off show. And the actual midpoint is the second half of a two-parter which is a great episode but it would have made NO sense to you 😆
In terms of recommendations, '4x10 Hush', '5x07 Fool for Love', '5x16 The Body', '5x22 The Gift' and '6x07 Once More with Feeling' are some of the highest rated episodes of the show. Some of the issues you've mentioned, like the morality of killing humans who do bad things, do crop up in the show, but are larger season-long arcs which you can't really pinpoint down to one-off episodes, although '3x14 Bad Girls' and '6x13 Dead Things' both deal with season-long arcs that tackle that subject.
