Never saw a burning tree being fell like that.
In a hollow tree, the rotten wood inside is more flammable. If there is an open spot in the trunk that allows air to get in, the fire will smolder until it opens a passage up higher in the tree. The fire will then burn very intensely because the heat causes the air to flow rapidly through the inside. It's the same principle that makes a rocket stove burn so hot.

Why do you have to cut burning trees down in a forest? I can think of some reasons, but I’m very curious why it’s better to cut a tree, than just let it stand there.
It's a matter of controlling when and where the tree lands when it falls. A tree burning like that is a risk that would have to be watched until it falls and burns out. When I was a kid, I found a tree that apparently was hit by lightning and burned. Fragments were in a field that it was close to and the tree had burned and fallen apparently during the storm from the remnants of a hurricane. The trunk was mostly burned up leaving branches laying around it and the stump was just small parts of it sticking above ground. If the surrounding woods had not been saturated, we would have been dealing with a pretty bad fire.
If you look closer the forest floor is all ash and there's half burned trees all around. The fire went through the area but the trees were to wet to fully burn is my guess
Had to show my wife this video so she can see how a real saw on a fire crew works instead of the made for tv crap lie on fire country ....beautiful job

As you can see a small ground fire has gone through, burning the underbrush. Early in the video you can see that there was a hole in the base that allowed the fire to catch hold on the tree. Healthy newer trees are able to withstand fires but when they rot on the inside they are susceptible to burning. A tree like this can continue burning for weeks after the main fire was put out. This means that as it burns internally, it will eventually burn to the top, spreading to the upper portion of the surrounding trees. This is to be avoided. Once a forest fire is up in the top(or crown) of the trees, it becomes incredibly difficult to control. This is why they have to go through and find these trees and cut them down.

@@jeffsnyder210 No. The big Ponderosa Pine probably had an old fire scar and some internal decay, and so when a wildfire burned up to it it got into the punky wood inside. The pie-slice had a gap internally where the rotten wood was that burned away. More oxygen in the rotten wood means it can burn much more readily than sound heartwood.
