i have owned one of these for 5 or 6 six years and i have not encountered any trouble with the cd writer, i mainly use the sampler and the multi-fx processors and i connected a sony studio mini disc recorder to the digital optical in./outs for quick overdubbing...it's super useful while making demo recordings by myself....even if the cd drive broke i would still use this unit as a sampler/FX's processor.
I did not find the high speed cd rw dics hard to find at all. I got a 25 pack on a spindle at Best Buy for $18, and they also had them locally at Wal Mart. This thing was a steal for me as I got it at Music Go Round for $99. Sounds great and records well , I'm very happy with it of course I'm old school and like to feel the sliders and press the buttons vs. doing it on a computer
theres a trick i learned for the discs if u still have this unit, when u format a hs disc and u save it before u eject it and try to use it again most the time it dont work, what i leanred is always record something on the disc before u hit save and eject. just record 1 second of nothing on the first track. i always used tdk or memorex high speed cds but there very expensive. once i found a 25 pack on sale. now i cant find the discs at all. it has alot of flaws i posted above
for anyone asking it uses high speed cd's there expensive 10$ for a 3 pack with jewel cases, the better way is finding a 20 pack spindle without cases. barely anyone sells the cd's. it must say HIGH SPEED right on it, youll know its the right ones by the ridiculous price and if they work when you pop them in lol. memorex usually makes them. tdk i think it was called use to make them as well
i got this unit in 2002-2003 i been using it since then i mainly just use it for vocals. i paid 1,200$ for it with a dr roland mic and akg headphones. the headphones fell apart within a few months. the machine is decent if u buy it now for about 300 on ebay, if u pay what i paid its not decent. for its time it was ok, but quickly got outdated in a year by other recorders. theres big flaws. the display will scramble on you but you can get it back. the levels shown are not right. and the hs discs
@sonnicheeba i just say this is for people who dont know what theyre doing because seriously, i switched to computer software for recording after this and never looked back. so much cleaner and more control
@@dolphinbeta514 That´s interesting. I will get mine that I ordered soon. I never recorded with a DAW but with a regular CD-Recorder (from Master-Out / mixer), so do you think this will help me?
@hippa2dahoppa2 hmm interesting... usually i started recording right away so i didnt have that issue. i will probably buy some discs just to have this as some kind of option if i want to really downgrade how im doing everything (i recorded ms-dos music tracker stuff into it recently, sounds VERY early 90s and crap which is what i wanted). i occasionally use it for an fx processor but nothing will make it ok i payed over 1500 for this
mine doesnt have to detect the ram each startup, u might want to try a different kind. i agree though computer recording is better. everyone tells me they like how my vocals sound on this machine and i tell them i think there computer recordings sound better.
God have I learned even more since this comment 13 years ago. Like how I’d never trust KRK speakers 😂. CDX1 is still here and working- primarily for it’s weird efffects
@hippa2dahoppa2 ya my display does that too and i have to hit the display button and it goes back to normal. i installed the upgradable ram but thats pointless because every time you turn it on you have to have it detect it and that takes over 20 minutes!!! everyone take it from me, just USE A COMPUTER! ableton live is amazing, or there are many options out there for you, it wouldve been cheaper if i bought a mac and an audio i/o than this pice of junk that sits in the corner untouched
I recorded a guitar and synthesizer with this machine on my channel! This machine was handy for mastering, and burning cds at one time. However, this thing was SO unreliable for multitrack recording. I would NEVER recommend it for that. I lost data so many times. Now it barely works. I paid 100 bucks almost 10 years ago for it. For what they wanted for these thing brand new, that was highway robbery! Worst multi-track recorder ever!
this is the worst thing i ever bought. if i had seen this video first i wouldnt have. the EQ NEVER comes out the same after you burn to disc, the midi in/out is very pointless the way its utilized, and it needs hispeed cd-rw BUT only 650mb size, 700mb wont work, and it must be certain brands, i have found. wish someone had told me for the price i couldve gotten a laptop and audio i/o, and probably enough money left for good headphones or monitors
That FUBU jersey is the bee's knees.

Annie! I got a chance to be her drummer back in 2001-2002. She rocks!

i own this & will keep if forever. there's so things i can do with this machine
I own this and it's great...
No lie?
I'm actually looking for some outdated products like this...I like the nostalgia, I guess? Thx for your post.
How do I get all 3 inputs (tracks) to play/rec at the same time?

Yes! I thought my discs were dead weight, but you gotta record just a couple of seconds of anything, and make sure to save it before shutting it down.

Yes it uses High Speed Cd's
how can i record with thiz 2001 Roland CDX-1 DiscLab on a computer
I wonder if I replace the cd burner with a newer one will then burn to regular cdr's ?
have you tried it yet?
It's pretty much an SP 808 with double the tracks and a CD burner.
i had one as well. where do you find CD's for it. isnt it true you have to use a Certain CD? High Speed CD's?
thrift stores

I went from computer to this. Im using all hardware to get the creative juices flowing.

I realized that this machine is 24 bit but the cd is 16 bit.

What was the internet?
How can this look so dated? Jeez it was only 2001, I must be old!
I just bought one for 60 Euro. For fun.
Go for it! CDs are now vintage and desirable?
James Porch I did not buy it for the cd, I bought it for composing. I ve got a zoom 24 and a korg d3200 too.
Has anyone noticed, that it can burn CDs? :)
@sonnicheeba ive learned a lot since then. now i have an m-audio delta 66 i/o and use ableton live, and some KRK rokit 5 monitors.
Monitors are monitors
lol

Screens suck

Wow I was going to get on for $50. About a 2 hour drive.
so obsolete nowadays ..... just funny how fast technology develops
@reconstructiv also i will NEVER buy roland again for anything
That original song she did sure sucks
