For those definition minded folks: Yes, historically a coupe could have had more than two doors, however check out Oxford or Miriam Webster's definitions, they consider that archaic and the modern definition is a 2-door vehicle.
But consider also that what is considered "correct" in a language is not based on what the dictionary says, it is based on what speakers of that language say. Dictionaries are a product of language, not the other way around. I believe the definition of "coupe" will change again before too long.
I think Acura should've kept the ZDX. If this segment does better than their midsize sedan siblings, then I think Acura could've profit from it. Especially now with their new brand design.
Agreed………They pulled the plug on it too soon……….They should re-introduce it……….Imagine a ZDX with the Hybrid of the 2020 MDX and adding twin turbos. You are talking at least 450 horsepower with great fuel economy.
Lower fuel economy, worse ride/handling balance, uglier, and costs more. That’s a lot of trade offs to haul the occasional big purchase at Home Depot. 10k different over the sedan will get you a lot of rental hours for one of their cargo trucks.
Even folks like me and you cannot find any sense in this kind of vehicle, unexpectedly these are selling quite well. Maybe it is happening due to fashion?
Everyone (especially women) these days is obsessed with higher seating position. They think these are somehow safer, gives them better visibility and comfier than sedans.
The German car manufacturers have pulled a stunner….add a significant premium price to capitalise on an obsession for SUV……and folk rushing to pay that premium
Exactly. In China a GLC costs the same as E-class, while a GLE reaches S-class price point. it’s all marketing oriented, i.e. more consumers just like SUV. It’s not a bad thing that people who want a sedan can demand more discount!
I think you nailed it Alex. The true comparison is not with an SUV, it's with a sedan. Ever since this car came out I have loved it, but I'm not an SUV lover, I'm a sedan lover (and some coupes). For me SUV's have never made much sense unless they seat 7 people and up, they just don't drive as well as a sedan. This car offers more space than a sedan with amazing driving capabilities, so it's the best of both worlds. I can see, however, why if you ARE an suv lover you would have a hard time making sense of it.
Also, I should say that my favorite European reviewer, Thomas of Autogefuhl, says EXACTLY the same as you about SUV’s replacing sedans since the seating position is more comfortable and there is more practicality
Hahaha..."vestigial trunk" ~ this made me laugh so much, just fantastic. Cheers Alex! Also, I think you're spot on with the E-Class Sedan comparison. Once you're spending that much money on this kind of luxury car it makes sense to be drawn to the benefits of the GLE especially when it represents a departure from the norm and an opportunity for a 'new' experience.
Alex has provided a logical explanation as to the existence and popularity of the "Coupified" crossover--it is the next iteration of the sedan. But to truly command its new market segment, we need a coupe version of the lower trim levels of the regular GLE. And I have another comment: who would want a glass roof that doesn't open? It's just an invitation to bake yourself alive in the summer. The pano roof in my SUV and sedan open, so why can't the Mercedes'?
I kinda see what Alex means in saying this is the 21st century sedan, but I prefer normal sedan ride height personally. And if I can get an E63 wagon with 90% of the utility and practicality of this with a lower ride height, I’ll take that every time.
Well, in French "coupe" means "cut", so you could say they did "cut" the box profile of a traditional SUV. It is an SUV that has been cut. Edit: The Germans are technically correct in calling this thing a "Cut" GLE because, well, it literally is. I'm well aware that the conventional use of coupe is for two door vehicles (2 and 4 seats), but I'm afraid they are not wrong. "Schnitt" or whatever it is in german doesn't sound as fancy.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Well Alex, it's not a matter of doors if you go by your link (would have to be a 2 seater). At least I would be able to see past them when driving behind them on the road. And overall it would be better for the climate too. Alex I do appreciate you enthusiasm for this vehicle. It is very obvious that you enjoyed it and just from my experience with you I can tell when a vehicle ranks high with you. However with that being said at E 63 wagon for me is the only way to go. The size and shape of the GLE coup e is something that I find not appealing. I do understand why you find the coup appelling. However they added size and weight for me do not justify the towing ability and it just being not pleasant to look at. On the other hand my wife loved your review of the Nautilus.
The "coupified crossover as the new sedan" is a sad commentary on society and likely an environmental disaster. Very few people need the ground clearance - especially not the pedestrians and cyclists you might hit - or any of the other benefits. Hatchback cars are dropping out of the market left and right, so that benefit is not compelling to most buyers. I suspect it is little more than the flavor-of-the-month for wealth signalling.
Kudos for the perceptive comment that vehicles like GLE 63 S "Coupe" represent an alternative to traditional sedans. And of course you're right that calling it a "coupe" is ridiculous, at least to the more (ahem) mature folks who remember when a "coupe" was a sedan with two doors. But we're a shrinking portion of consumers and will die off eventually. Furthermore, I'd go a step further and say that vehicles like this Benz and some other vehicles that fall between sedans and SUVs are effectively the replacement for what Americans once called station wagons. The liftback design found in vehicles like the (apparently soon to be extinct 😒) KIA Stinger , the VW Arteon, and the Audi A5 and A7 provide the versatility in terms of nearly the cargo capacity of a compact SUV in a manner very similar to wagons of twenty years (or more) ago without fashion penalty that wagons project in America.
Personally I agree. But a huge portion of consumers (like my wife) is willing to give up handling on secondary backroads for elevated driver seating. Of course, it's much like a nuclear arms race. As the height of other vehicles increases the desire to improve visibility in heavy traffic follows, especially among more "petite" drivers.
Okay, you have convinced me that SUVs are taking over for sedans. That is no small thing, and it is due in large part to your years of credibility from your excellent reviews. If I had to choose between a 911 and an M5 I was M5 all the way. In sum, I was a sedan guy. And until recently, I've held out for sedans even during the SUV craze. But this has all changed in the last couple of years. For the first time in my adult life, I'd rather have a "4-door coupe" from Mercedes or BMW than an E63 or M5. I can hardly believe I'm writing this. But it's true. And I'm not alone obviously. When I sit in an E63/M5, I feel very limited. I much prefer sitting high up in the GLE 63. I prefer being able to tow. I prefer being able to stash stuff in the back area in a way that can not be done in a traditional trunk. Just like you said at the 21:30 mark. I think the sedan is going to follow the traditional 2-door coupe into the graveyard (have you notice how few traditional coupes exist today?). People like me want it all in one vehicle: utility and performance. Thanks for pointing out something that may seem obvious to some but is actually a breakthrough for me in my thinking.
Sorry Alex. Can't sell me on this one or any other MB in their line. I have owned five MBs over the years and the last one ('08 E Class) did me in. Too much electronic wizardry that failed way too often for me to feel confident and safe driving on trips. There are so many autos today at half the price that are much more reliable and less expensive to maintain. Love your reviews!

You keep saying impractical, yet indicate that it has more trunk space then sedans. So are all sedans also impractical? Or it's impractical compared to a non coupe SUV? If thats the case how many times a year are you filling up the trunk were this space won't suffice?
This makes me miss my 2006 Mazda6 hatchback, but of course it was only about $22k. It was a lot better looking than this. No way I could (or would) pay anywhere close to that Mercedes price.
Somebody driving one of these just hit and killed a cyclist in my city, and now I can't see this vehicle as anything other than a deadly symbol of excess that adds nothing to the luxury sedan formula.
Inferiority complex… having to compensate certain body parts… liking to look down on people… thinking that at least if you crash the other one dies first… needing to tell everyone how you can fit a barbecue grill in your trunk… 😂 I cannot come up with nice reasons even if I try
I’d rather have an E63S and then have a cheap big car like a Suburban or Sienna. This car sacrifices too much. Doesn’t fit a ton in the trunk and has inferior dynamic performance to the E63S
I suggest something even better: A Lincoln Aviator. GV80 can go for 65K for a 4 cylinder, so how is that a value? I would rather get me a Lincoln Aviator, which is actually the true value king and competitor to the GV80 in the segment. Hell I'd even rather get the new MDX over the GV80 too since the Koreans is asking way too much and too confident. Aviator starts at 51K and GV80 48K, so on the first glance the GV80 is undercutting the Lincoln. However not only does the Aviator also has RWD, but comes standard with a base 3.0L Twin Turbo Ecoboost V6 with more horsepower and torque than either the 2.5 or the optional 3.5 of the GV80. Also in the GV80 you need to pay extra 11K on top of the 48K starting price to get the 3.5 (and still don't have as much power), so comparatively spec by spec, GV80 is more expensive. Of course the Black Label Aviator is most expensive than the GV80 but you get more ownership and membership features that you don't get in the GV80. Not to mention the Aviator is bigger vehicle and can tow and haul more as well. Ecoboost is also proven to be reliable with the 3.5L reaching north of 300000 miles.
Mercedes styling has really gotten bad. I don't know who signed off on that frontclip , but its very unattractive. I would be very curious if any E Class shoppers ever considers this. I have a strong feeling they don't. There are those that want ride height and there are those that don't. I've yet to find someone who didn't care if they got an SUV or car. I also wouldn't quote a dealership statement as truth. I've yet to find an honest one
@@damilolaakanni that’s a good point. Maybe that’s the BMW designer’s grand plan… to sway even more people into buying these huge ugly piles of garbage

I’d rather have an E63S and then have a cheap big car like a Suburban or Sienna. This car sacrifices too much. Doesn’t fit a ton in the trunk and has inferior dynamic performance to the E63S
I didn't think that Suburbans were cheap...had one as a company car many years ago. It certainly was big.
@@kenc2257 I mean a used $4000 Suburban or Sienna
Do engine start/stop systems shorten the life of the engine in an effort to save fuel?
I'll just take a GV80 with the V6/Prestige Pkg and invest the rest of the cash I'll save by not buying this...
This is for Americans, real enthusiastics will buy e63 s amg wagon.
It costs this much money and it still doesn't have all the options.
Umm…it’s called E63 AMG wagon
At 6 figures, I'll stick with my peasant-spec Tesla :)
I'm sure this is a great car but I can't stand the looks of it from any angle.
Mercedes and BMW are definitely going through ugly phases right now.
UGLE Phase
This just depressing.
GLE and X6 are the ugliest cars on the road.
No, that would be M3 and M4.
@@damilolaakanni that’s a good point. Maybe that’s the BMW designer’s grand plan… to sway even more people into buying these huge ugly piles of garbage
17 mpg lol
$100k plus… what’s the point?
all copy from acura ZDX
👍🏻
Easily the ugliest vehicle since the AMC Gremlin and Pontiac Aztek
Fat Hatch
