    really enjoying the sharpening episodes, would love to see more of the same. Would also like to find episodes on improving graver cutting techniques. I'm beginning the journey of learning these tools, any lessons on best practices, etc. Anyway thx, love the content.

    Does this mean the onglette can't be used unless sharpened in this way?

    one tip, the 'heel' as you are calling it, by woodworkers/metal machinists is known as a "bevel" as in a knife; micro-bevel, the small facet on the cutting edge end of the main bevel, and by a machinist, a Releif, or clearence angle which is there for flow of chips off of the tools cutting surface.

    Great video! I've been practicing sharpening/polishing my onglettes. Side question what is a scorper? I've heard a lot of different answers to this question and no one seems to agree. Some say it's a v point with a tiny flat. Some say it is a v with no flat. Any thoughts?

      After discussion around the shop we have not come to a consensus on this either. Like many things in the engraving and printmaking world, there seems to be a mix of terminology and definitions. We have seen it both ways. Sorry to not be of better help.

    This is a bit confusing, when he is sharpening face and at the same time he said 30 degrees on top. Is it a post angle? But face and sides should be sharpen separately. First video was more clear. Next time I am coming Molly, you have to clarify this to me. Nara from KC. #anaraandco. Thank you.

      This video is demonstrating how to sharpen an onglette for cutting tight curves or circles. The face angle is 65°, but there is an additional 30° tilt when sharpening the face. This is what helps cut those tight curves. So, you would set your post angle to 65° and the tool dial to 30° as well.

    On 0:46, can you explain what graver's angle can fit in graver's holder? so when we follow the step on 0:46, the graver and graver's holder and the sharpening fixture can line up ? thank you

      The graver itself is straight stock and does not have an angle

      am new to this channel, but from what I have gathered so far, the tools are mouned in a collet for the duration of their usefull life, so once ground the first shot, the collet ensures alignment to the fixing jigs thereafter (collet+handpiece+grinder jig have a pin/slot to allign with each other); the difference is one collet for round stock (one set_screw), another for square/diamond shape stock (two set_screws,perpendicular to each other).

    What about heat treatment..?

    • @savestheday258
      @savestheday258 3 года назад

      Ben is sharpening a c-max carbide graver and you don't have to worry about any heat treatment with those. I do keep mine cool with water when using a hone but with the yellow diamond wheel you can polish carbide within seconds almost. And it doesn't get very hot.

    I would like Molly to learn how to do this and demonstrate it herself. I think it would be much clearer.

    Insufficient explanation as to what he is doing. Is this for cutting only one direction? Does a mirrow image graver need to be cut for cutting the other direction? The video needs better information as to what is being done at each step and why. Whereas the video is technically adequate, it is lacking in its educational value. J. Dan Weathers, M.D.

      Part 3 will show Ben using this tool and more explanation on if a mirror image graver is required, the direction or directions you can cut, and more. This video is more of a demonstration of what Ben does to make the tool. When dealing with hand sharpening there is not a great method to explain every little detail. A lot of it is learned through experience, trial and error, and hands on teaching.
