- How does an electronic throttle work? Whats inside an electronic throttle? Well...
On this episode of Motorvate’s DIY garage, we are going to show you how an an electronic throttle works and the inside operation.
The one in the video is from an Infiniti G37, but the throttle body is also used on Nissan 370z, Skyline, Fuga and a few other Infiniti models like EX37, FX37, Q40, Q50, Q70, QX50 and QX70.
Basically any Nissan or Infiniti with a 3.7 litre v6!
(For the motor geek: the throttle body is the same on the VQ37VHR and the VQ35HR. These engines were used for the last two years of the Nissan 350Z and Infiniti G35)
The video also explains why there are no power gains when the coolant lines are removed from the throttle body, aka "throttle body bypass" or "throttle body coolant bypass".
As a bonus, the video also explains what the electronic throttle is doing when the "Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning" is being performed by the ECU.

Iv got a 2015 370z and bought a kunfine car electronic throttle controller for 89$ when it's plugged in and lights up but engine light comes on and when u give it throttle the rpm go up extremely slow. I don't know what wrong with it. Anyone have any ideas

Great video as always! Regarding those two adjustment screws, under what conditions should the be adjusted? Or are they adjusted as needed at manufacture and should not be touched? I suppose if that were the case they would not be adjustable¿?

Great question! These are adjusted at the factory and we must NEVER adjust them.
In re-watching the video, I should of mentioned that.
I wish you mentioned something about this debate on if you can move the throttle plate or not. After seeing this I don't see what is so highly sensitive with our cars throttle bodies.

I don't know if that is true for ALL throttle bodies, but it is safe to move the Nissan/Infiniti throttle bodies to clean them. Just make sure to do the 3 steps shown here: ruclips.net/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/видео.html

shouldn't be a problem for these "single individual" big throttle bodies, but for motorcycles and some supercars that have one throttlebody opening "per cylinder" , or no RELEARN, then DO NOT fidget around in there or you can knock something loose and each cylinder air suction won't be in sync with eachother and you may need to buy another throttle body entirely since; those are simply idle value factory set in ECU that relies on a fixed position of each throttle body openings.
I remembered seeing something similar in my GSXR shop manual last year when I did the valve adjustments and had to take the entire top of engine apart pretty much. throttle bodies were in a row, all 4 openings opens together. made sure to only spray that shit and not touch and push around in there. rather waste the $8 bottle than several hundreds if I damaged it.

I have no idea on the supercar throttle bodies, but It is easy to set up the carbs or throttle bodies on motorcycles.
I use a syncing gauge (CarbTune: www.carbtune.com/) and set all 4 cars/throttle bodies to be a close as possible.
This is also known as carb/throttle body syncing. I'm sure your GSX-R shop manual has a section on it.
I suspect for any engine with individual throttle bodies, the process would be the same.

When i first turn my car on it goes up to 2 and seems high idle then when warms up the rpm hand goes to 750 at stop sign with a little sputtering i have a nissan what i did i used my index finger and pushed the throttle plate 1/2 inch open so i can wipe a Q tip around to clean the throttle body and the edge of the butterfly

Hi, great videon just wanted to ask I have a 2009 Shogun/Montero depending where your from. When cold and ignition off should it be closed or open and when it comes to idle where should it be closed or open as I think mine is jammed open...
I am not familiar with that engine, so I don't have any first hand knowledge on it.
Typically the throttle is open around 10% on a cold start, assuming the engine doesn't have an independent idle control circuit. (aka controlled air bypass)
If your throttle is jammed open, the engine would rev extremely high, (around 6,000+ RPM) and pressing the gas pedal wouldn't do anything.
Also, the check engine light would be on, as the throttle position is constantly monitored.

As you can guess, it is difficult for me to troubleshoot a car I have never seen, over the internet. (Renault is not sold in North America)
Your first step should be to scan it for codes. Then lookup the trouble code and understand what the issue is. At that point, you can start to troubleshoot or take it to a shop.
My guess would be a problem with the throttle position sensor.

This one is made by Nissan / Renault and it is from a Infiniti G37.

That will be difficult to do... Each manufacturer will use a different electronic throttle body with different specifications.
Your best bet is to find/purchase the factory shop manual so you know the proper method of testing and what values to look for.

Great video man I just have one question. Is it possible for it to work without that smaller spring that turns it from resting to absolute closed position why is it necessary?
That is part of the "fail safe" system. If the throttle body motor stops working due to a failure, the throttle will close to about 5%, which is an engine idle. This way you still have power steering, power brakes and don't stop in traffic.
If the throttle is allowed to completely close, the engine doesn't get any air and will stop. (assuming the engine doesn't have its own idle control circuit)
Of course thank you for your quick answer. I dissasembled one and I am trying to make a different housing and a bit simplified system because original one doesn't fit where I need it so the other spring is giving me a hard time

Here because of a high idle issue on a 350z hr. What kind of motor would that be? It has to hold a position against a force (The spring). Perhaps it operates like a servo motor.
If your HR is an 2007 I guess you missed the warning in the video description... there is an ECU update required to have the "idle air volume learning" run to completion. Some dealers will update the ECU, some want to sell new ECUs and some want to sell new throttle bodies.
Also, Eugene at Enthusiast Auto Care (www.yelp.ca/biz/enthusiast-auto-care-concord) can reprogram your ECU.
If your HR is an 2008, make sure all the per-conditions are met and try again. Sometimes it seems to take a few times for the idle to settle.
my question is , if in resting close throttle position still throttle plate (opens a little bit) when pressed with a finger towards inward. will this be faulty or okay?
On Nissan/Infiniti vehicles, that's normal and is part of the "fail safe" safety system. If the power to the throttle body is removed (due to short or broken wire), it will be open about 5% to allow the engine to make a little power.
The ECU (engine control unit) uses what is called an "H-bridge" motor controller and can drive the throttle to open or close.
Is it okay to push the butterfly even though it's an electronic Toyota throttle body ?
I don't have any first hand knowledge on how the Toyota throttle body system works, so I don't know....
My guess would be is that nothing would be harmed, just like on the 370/G37 throttle bodies.
Heated throttle body does heat up intake air, but mostly @ idle. I parked my girlfriend's car in the parking spot & used scanner to watch intake air temperature in live data & it kept going up but slowly. But I don't think this matter much since most demanded "performance" isn't @ idle speed 😁.

Keep in mind, the air intake temperature sensor is usually way before the throttle body, so what you saw was the intake tubing warming up from the heat of the engine.
With that said, we agree on not looking for maximum air density / power at idle :)
Hi, I have a Toyota Prius 2011, and I'm getting code P2102 which means is "Throttle Actuator 'A' Control Motor Circuit" Low. I need more info before I replace the whole piece. please help.

BUT for $25 you can get 2 days access to the Toyota Technical Information System and troubleshoot the code to determine what is wrong.

I'm not sure I fully understand what you are asking. Spraying throttle body cleaner where the engine air flows is fine.... and that is the only place to use it.
Amazing video man... However I have one question that.. in which situation the throttle motor closes the gap... Is it in that situation when we have to start the car and when we put our car in ignition the throttle motor completely closes the air passage by spinning in opposite direction to choke the air and star the car with just gasoline.. and automatically readjust after the car is started and at idle?????????? As a general rule, the throttle is not closed during engine start up. They are opened about 5-10%... After all, the engine does need some air to start.
The required fuel enrichment for engine start up is done using the fuel injectors. The engine computer looks at the coolant temperature and calculates the amount of fuel needed to start the engine. Chokes were only used on carbureted engines.
The only time the throttle is mostly closed is when you are coasting (foot off the accelerator) like when slowing down for a red light or stop sign.

I have 2010 toyota corolla with electronic throttle body. engine had vibrations at idle. mechanic first clean throttle body with carb cleaner . but did not fix the issue. then he messed up with that idle screw. now the car driveability is more worst, it lack power when accelarate. although engine idle has stable RPM 700.
can you please give me a brief procedure or service manual to bring that screw to its orignal position.
I have requested too many guys on youtube but no body has help me.

Hi bud, I have the weirdest problem! I went to change the air filter and thought to check and clean the throttle body butterfly. It was fully open which I thought was strange as had no real issues, I mean I have thought the car was a little sluggish on acceleration (delayed) and thought maybe my EGR choking. I always put good quality treatment into fuel and try different types so thought maybe not so... Lately had a little stuttering at the first few lights after leaving the house first thing but not pulling off the drive?
My throttle body was fully open with engine off, I sprayed it and wiped but was pretty clean... as you could wish for, I sprayed in with engine running spurts of spray at a time but no movement with butterfly?
I had my naibours grandchild come with half decent scan tool tablet a month or two earlier to check car after I gave him a toe and he said that there was no codes, which he thought was suprising. I dont know if he knows fully whats wha but he mentioned my pedal showing depressed 19% ?? he didnt start the car with scan tool plugged in which I asked and said that I thought you could but he said not with his tool. He said he wiped the car for any codes anyhows. Oh I did have a funny few weeks with my battery dying a while back and got that checked but came back fine (just needs a charge so I bought a smart charger and let it do its thing but it kept dying on me and then I put the battery on a full repair charge and its been fine since plus i've kept car in a lower gear to charge up more as my brother said I was driving like a pussy... trying to save miliage 😂 Any idea bud why my butterfly is full open with no real issue on idle or revs going high and once the car warms up all other issues apart from sluggish accelorator dissapear! oh and I disconnected the battery a few times to charge so I assume the sensor would have reset as ive heard on another vid to disconect the negative.
I have been worried why my surpentine/alternator belt seems slightly worn on the outside but looks great on the ribbed inside? I thought maybe my issues was the belt tensioner or idle pulley but strange how the black is wearing off on the outside and all looked good with no movement on the tensioner. I did hear the other night late on when it was quiet a little rythmic chirp ever so quiet which i've not heard before which makes me think the idle pulley but cant make head way with the throttle body butterly fully open?

I'm not going to be much help. I don't know much about Honda's and nothing about diesels.
Diesel does not have regular throttle body, it have throttle body to shut off the engine, this throttle is open full all the time and only close when you turn off your engine, this is safety feature of newer diesel engines, it protect engine from runaway. In older diesels when turbo seals blow up turbo is spraying oil into intake and even when you turn off the engine/cut fuel supply it still run and it run like hell, max rpm's and shit ton of black smoke. It will stop when there will be no more oil in the engine. Back to the topic this throttle is normally open, in pertol cars throttle is normally close so in you car throttle is used for like 5 seconds and it goes back to its normal position
I would love to pick your brains. I'm from UK and have an iveco daily van. I have got myself a misfire which is very random. I've changed the mass air flow sensor.ive taken off the throttle body as it was so thick in an oil like gloop.its now sparkling clean. But still the misfire. I have no egr valve as its been taken off and blanked but not deleted,but this was 2 years ago it was taken off. How would I know if the throttle body has failed as I'm fairly certain it has to be part of the problem..and when I take the throttle body off,the butterfly is in the open fully position

Without knowing the specifics of you engine, I can only guess. I think it is very unlikely that a throttle body would cause a misfire.
You may want to get an cheap wireless OBD scanner and app for your phone (OBDFusion is very good). Then you can view your fuel trims, air fuel ratio and if you run the diagnostic report, you can see the misfire counters by cylinder. (if supported on your vehicle)
Most misfires are a result of a lean condition or poor spark.

@@MotorvateDIY I have an ond2 reader and things that came up was obviously egr and the other was air mass flow sensor. I replaced air mass sebsor. And fitting and new egr valve and cooler tomorrow. Will let you know if this solves the issue.

What an excellent question!
In the specific example of the VQ37VHR / VQ35HR engine used on G35, G37, 350z, 370z and others, there is no idle air control valve.
Idle air control is done by precise positioning of the throttle plate.
I would assume other manufacturers would also use a similar, system as it reduce costs and simplifies engine assembly.

He provides a service which bores out OEM TB’s (to the safest extent). On his website, we can see that he already bored out GTR’s/370z/G37 TB.
I think his work is amazing. It would be sooo cool if you were to try out maxbore.com and do a before/after dyno

I don't think a bored out throttle body will work well with the factory tune.
You may want to look into that before spending any money.
The intake efficiency episode should be out in about 4-6 weeks, if all goes as planned.

Good day Sir .....i just wanna ask if the throtle plate will open when you press the gas pedal even when the engine is not running?
It all depends on how the engine computer (ECU / PCM / DME) is programmed.
In the example of the G37/370z, when in neutral/park, it doesn't move.
BUT with the engine off, ignition on and in drive/in gear it will open up to 30-40%.
Great video. I have a problem in my sx4 the engine has low rpm when I drive shift to low gear the the car turns off and if i press the clutch the car turns on back and it 50-50 not all time . Sometimes I have to turn the key on again . I have cleaned my throttle body . I have checked the ignition coil . Spark plug. All are fine. So what the problem any idea? Is there any way to increase rpm.

Sorry I don't know anything about the Suzuki SX4. Suzuki left North America 6 years ago and I have never worked on one.
From what you describe, it sounds like an electrical issue that is making the engine cut out. Maybe have a look in a Suzuki Facebook group or online forum.

Hey Bojan Jokanovic,
The throttle body "percent open" will be different for different engines. Some engines use the throttle body to control idle speed (like the VQ37VHR) and others have a "idle air control valve" that controls the idle air.
If your idle speed is normal (typically around 650-750 RPM) then I would think your 11% open is normal for that engine.
You could ask around on the Golf 5 forums to see what other engines are at.

If the motor failed in an isolated area, or in an emergency situation, could you rig a cable to the throttle shaft and manually open the valve for motion, or will the computer disallow this action?
Suppose you could manually turn the TPS a bit as well?
If the unit failed when pulling into traffic and you get hit by a semi going 70 mph, what then ?
Why is there no backup system built in to the throttle body ?

Very interesting questions! Different manufactures have different "fail -safe" system. Below is what Nissan does:
The electronic throttle systems are very safe. When power is removed from them, like when the engine is turned off, they are open 4-5 degrees.
So, if the throttle body motor fails, the engine will still be able to run to about 2,000 RPM.
I don't think they could be manually operated since the manual operation wouldn't match what the engine computer is expecting and that would put it into a "fail safe" mode.
As for "Will future designs have this?" ... well, just about every vehicle made in the last 15-20 years already has it.
They have been used for a long time and have proven to be very safe.

But, you can't trick the computer's awareness of the failed throttle motor r? Yes, things are advanced, but 2000 rpm may not be enough when something goes wrong whilst passing a semi uphill nearing a blind corner. There has to be unforeseen danger in every design. Otherwise people would just stay at home and eat Pringles.

The engine computer has a feed back system for the electronic throttle.
It will send a command for the throttle to open a specific amount, and then look at the throttle position sensor to double check it is where it was told to go.
With the above in mind, you wouldn't be able to open the throttle just the correct amount that the engine computer has requested, and this would result in the engine computer going into a fail-safe mode.
I understand your concern about an electronic item failing, however, do you ever worry about that single throttle cable breaking? I don't think you do, as they have proven to be very safe, just like the electronic throttle :)

Physically, a cable has more tensile strength if kept lubed often.
Cables of sorts reinforce tires, for incalculable confidence.
But ( in my mind ( a motorized / electronic ) throttle body is like a Pheriengi weapon used to control Picard's mind. Ha, ha,...It is what it is. Someone has to complain about something.
