ABANDONED ESSEX CHURCHES | ST PETERS BIRCH

  • The 170 year old Grade II-listed St Peter and St Paul’s church in Birch, near Colchester, which closed in 1990, has stood empty for almost 25 years and has fallen into disrepair.
The Diocsese of Chelmsford, which looks after the Church of England’s affairs in Essex, says it has been unable to find a suitable alternative use for the historic building in that time.
Regrettably, despite having found a willing buyer for the church who is prepared to spend £1,200,000 restoring this iconic landmark, the Church Commissioners in consultation with the Diocese of Chelmsford, have decided to proceed with their plans to demolish.
In our opinion, this is unnecessary destruction of local heritage. The resultant harm will not only be in the loss of this Grade II listed building but also the detrimental impact of the loss on the Birch Conservation Area and the surrounding landscape.

Great video from you but not good that they plan to demolish such a wonderful building. And all the graves have so much history and memories, what do they intend to do with all the graves awful to think. Thanks for showing these churches and bringing these history videos into the general public X Take Care X

These old flint churches are everywhere, almost every village has one, they should be protected and if somebody is willing to take on its care they should be passed on..... Within reason, whatever it takes to keep our heritage alive should be considered..... In London and other places in the UK old buildings have been given over to homeless communities to rebuild and care for. There must be another option rather than the distruction of a historic beautiful building.

That's sad to see a building of such fine quality and local historic significance about to be demolished. Particularly if the suggestion of someone buying it could have been allowed to go ahead

I have now picked up on the fact that you also visited St.Mary`s ruined church , at Little Birch. You caught the atmosphere of that place, so perfectly. It would be good if you could make a video of All Saints, East Horndon.

sent you an email btw, cheers pal, just google it and i see that church up on the hill all the time when i'm driving to see Candice. never knew it was abandoned. once lock down is over i'll go and check it out, its locked and the key has to be obtained from a keyholder apparently, no idea where that is though.

S.S.Teulon, of Westminster was one of the most propinent, and sometimes contraversial architects, Tom...Another well-known architect was not truly-appreciated. I saw the shameful demolition in 1957 of St.Nicholas, the former 'Dial Church', in Colchester High street.

Thanks for the info mate, I remember going to look at this church. It was so sad, it was at the centre of the village, it dwarfed the village, yet it was shut down and left to rot. Surprised the friends of friendless churches haven't got involved. I really wanted to get inside because I've seen how amazing it looked from photos taken by other urbex groups. But it would of involved breaking in which is never acceptable. Thanks for watching mate.

Yeah thats a real crime to demolish considering they had a buyer, for me this just goes to show the amount of money and lack of concern ''The church of England'' has, they could quite easily restore it but are probably holding out for a bigger offer from a private developer..............(bastards).............cheers,Stu.

@@julieblackstock8650 Can't say. If we had that lovely church in my little town in Montana, it would be full several times over on Sunday provided the Lord's word was being preached. They don't make lovely buildings like that, anymore.
