WARNING !! Do NOT Attempt to install the RAM Tough-Track in your Crosstrek if it is equipped with the EYESIGHT System !! There is separate manual on this system that is included with your package in the glove box. READ IT. I got all the parts from RAM parts and was ready to start the install on the dash when I found the book. I called the Dealer where I bought my 2021 Crosstek Premium to see if this would be a warranty voiding issue and he said "most likely". Even the rear view mirror has to be kept "straight across" for the system to operate correctly!! It's even in the book. Tom has put together a great idea with the best parts and an easy to follow video.
Excellent. Our 2022 Crosstrek Limited is supposed to arrive 7/18 and I have an FTM-400DX that has remained in the box since I got it. Can't wait. Thanks for the tutorial and parts links.
Nice job and clean installation. I absolutely did not want any suction cup mounts, and found a RAM track for my Jeep to secure my phone (GPS mapping apps), ID-5100 faceplate, mic holder and inReach mini. I even have room for a dashcam and am looking at Garmin units for that. Six months of use (with lots of off-road/washboard road travel out here in Arizona) and everything is still as secure as day one. Great product with nearly infinite possible configurations so everyone can benefit from this system keeping their devices secure. Peace. Pete - KI7LIL
Just did this on my 2019 forester sport, the dash uses the exact same parts for the 3 removed in this video from what I could tell. Great tip with the center punch. For the track I went with a 8” extruded composite tough-track as I’ll likely be putting the ram balls right on the ends of the track.
Excellent! Hope you're as happy with this mod as I am. it's proven quite versatile since I put it in and I use it regularly. Most recently as a mount for my ham radio, but it's served multiple purposes as needed :) Ram gear aint cheap, but I can't help but love em.
Firm believer in RAM products. Have their phone mounts on all our bikes as well as mirror mounts. I even use one to hold a drone controller to my handlebars since it needs to be tethered to my phone to operate. If I ever think I need something like this - I’ll look this video up again. Nice work
Thank you! And yeah, I've come to really like RAM products. They're not cheap, but in this case, you definitely get what you pay for. I've used a couple RAM knock-offs before and most of them just don't compare with respect to quality or durability. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. I think that's what I'lll do to mount some stuff in my wife's Impreza. Ram also makes a magnetic radar detector mount that should fit our needs. I ordered a few tracks for my Titan XD to mount my Ham right before watching this.
Nice! And thanks for watching! I really like this mod myself. It's super handy and versatile. Right now it holds my Yaesu FTM 400 XDR (my main mobile dual band Ham radio) and it's held up really well. Good luck!
Glad to help! I love this mod personally. I currently use it to mount my ham radio face and mic. I find it extremely versatile and inconspicuous when not in use. Ram mount stuff isn't cheap, but so far I think it's worth it. Thanks for watching!
I actually just installed a powered JL sub (link below). Was planning on doing a video on it but it didn't work out as planned. Still might do a short video on it in general using some pics I snapped of the install for guidance. Bottom line, I'm very happy with it. www.jlaudio.com/products/acp108lg-w3v3-car-audio-microsub-amplified-subwoofer-systems-93330 I also plan on doing a full stereo upgrade but couldn't quite make the full investment in speakers, amp, sub, etc... so I'm building as I go. Starting with the sub definitely provided the best bang for the buck (literally and figuratively). Next will be speakers all around and another amp. Deciphering the Crosstrek wiring is interesting to say the least. Spoiler alert: The wire colors for the speakers out of the head unit are NOT the same colors as the ones to the speakers themselves. Doing a continuity check across the leads saved my bacon. Good luck and I hope to hear how you like your mod! OE speakers are definitely a bit lethargic. :)
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I love this setup myself. Super versatile. I was originally hesitant to drill holes in the car, but I didn't feel like dealing with adhesives failing...especially in the dash area with wild temperature swings. The mechanical fastening of this rail has proven excellent and I have no regrets. Good luck with your project!
have you noticed any warping of the plastic the track is drilled to when loaded with accessories? or any warping of trim panels around it? thanks again for making an easy to follow install.
Tom, before you had the Ram mount track, you had a seat wedge. I have a HT that I want to put in my vehicle in addition to my GMRS mobile, but don't know if I want to drill (that part) of my dash (plenty of holes in other places including my illuminated accessory switches, in exactly the same place you put yours... like minds). What brand were you using and how did it work for an HT with remote mic? Thanks!
Finally made it to your channel! Good DIY presentation! I will have to make a video on updating this panel in my Hummer H-2. Did you clamp the camera to the headrest or do you have a dome light mount for your GoPro? I could even put one of these rail mounts in the plane! Looking forward to you growing your channel! 73 de wa9e
Thanks Roberto. I use a few of SMALLRIG clamps for all sorts of GoPro and camera needs. Link below for reference, or you can check out Amazon for "SMALLRIG Multi-Functional Ballhead Clamp Double Ball Adapter with Bottom Clamp". For this video, I just clamped the GoPro to the sunroof opening which centered it perfectly for the shot. www.amazon.com/SMALLRIG-Multi-Functional-Ballhead-Adapter-Standard/dp/B07GWJJ6Y4/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-drs1_0?cv_ct_cx=smallrig&dchild=1&keywords=smallrig&pd_rd_i=B07GWJJ6Y4&pd_rd_r=1fb90f6f-3b7f-44c4-bbdf-aaeb9472c47a&pd_rd_w=gBhp8&pd_rd_wg=FBqOW&pf_rd_p=f3f1f1cd-8368-48df-ac69-94019fb84e3f&pf_rd_r=KZTMFXY9EBDRRMWW9YW1&psc=1&qid=1600142312&sr=1-1-f7123c3d-6c2e-4dbe-9d7a-6185fb77bc58
Thanks! Been using it a lot. Currently is the mounting point for a newer mobile ham radio. Super happy with the versatility and highly recommend one of these for any car. Take care!
It's held up very well. It's now actually used to hold up the face and mic for a ham radio and it's working very well. Ram mounts seem to be pretty solid with respect to the friction balls not slipping. Though I've had mixed experiences with off brand brackets from Amazon...some work even better, some not so much. I'm afraid I can't recall which brands were better. Anyway, I'll be doing a short video on my interior mods soon and I'll cover the bracket again with the currently mounted radio if you're interested. Thanks for watching!
not yet. hand held GMRS are required (I believe) to have non-removable antennas so not much in the line of options there. I can change out my mobile unit antenna though so might give that a shot in the future.

What on earth would this interfere with that has... 1- to do with the Eye sight, and 2-with the rear view mirror?
I did this to my crosstrek and it’s been one of the best additions to my build. Thank you for making this video!
Did this on my 2021 forester the panel was a little larger but same basic design so it worked perfectly. Thanks for the video Tom it really helped
I like this but wonder if you could glue this instead of the nut and bolt mounting. I'm checking this out .. Thanks
Yet another Tom The Dilettante modification successfully added to Scubroo! Thanks for continually sharing your knowledge Tom!

Another great video. I must be weird, but I love the sound of the clips snapping into place, lol!
Not weird. It’s as satisfying as the sound of them breaking is disheartening :-)

Thanks Rick, now time to sink more money into various Ram mount pieces ;)
I had never heard of this mounting hardware, so thank you for the information and how-to.

Well done ! In lieu of the hardware used, I like to use black colored poprivets. Esp when no wiring involved.
So cool! I was trying to figure out how to mount my Wouxun KG-1000G face plate in my GMC Sierra and this looks like a win! Great video!

have you noticed any warping of the plastic the track is drilled to when loaded with accessories? or any warping of trim panels around it? thanks again for making an easy to follow install.
Negative. Still straight as a rail.

I'm about to do this today, wish me luck! Thanks for doing the install video, I was wondering how the dash came apart 😜
Nice! It's by far one of the most handy and versatile mods I've done to date. You shouldn't regret it :) Good luck!
@@TomtheDilettante All done with zero issues, thanks man!
Success! Thanks Brother, it was a perfect set up on my 2021 Crosstrek

Hey Tom, where did the washers go? Assuming on the bottom before the nuts but just wanted to be sure.
Yessir, that is correct
@@TomtheDilettante perfect timing. I’m starting this mod tonight.
Excellent! Good luck. I haven’t regretted this one bit
@@TomtheDilettante finally got around to starting it. I found it much easier to pry off the top piece underneath it at the top of the head unit.

Very nice Tom

Great idea.

There's different ball sizes for the track. Is this a b or c size ball?
I'm using B size (1") ram balls. They work well for all my needs so far. Thanks for watching!
