It must be UK ...I do have the same power extension cord... only mine is black with orange... and the toilet exhaust pipes are outside 😁..I don't have a big garden..I do grow tomatoes and running beans...I do have about 6..7 square meter...I managed to sift half just with a small sifter by hand.. I'm thinking to build a small manual rotary sifter to finish the other half.. Great work mate 👍

Back in 1992, I put ALL the top 12" of soil from a 50' x 15' garden through a 24"x15" hand riddle on a frame. Made for superb growing conditions after removing more than a ton of stone & built me a lot of muscle... Thankfully the soil in my present garden is dark, largely stone free & much easier to work with.
Great idea i could have used this just lately, i have sieved all the gravel at the bottom of the garden and got 7 wheel barrows of soil out of it, One change you may want to make is put your plywood boards on the inside the frame and it will stop the soil landing and laying on the bottom frame board.
Hi yes, I did that in the old one, but its much more work to cut them to the inside due to wheel support and that little bit of soil sitting on the 2x2 timber in negligible so decided the extra work wasn't worth it. Also by having them outside when painted the rain is less likely to get caught up when it got a cover on the top. Thanks for the suggestion though and it will be relevant for those who make their own that may want to implement that :)
This is brilliant!!! I’m going to show my husband and see if we can build one! We’re both 62 and it’s getting harder for me to sift soil and compost and such by hand.
Its pretty easy to build. Do it over a week or so. the frame is easy and so is the drum. just got to get hold of a good motor and your laughing. once you have one you will never want to be without it. I sieved 5 tons of compost in an hour with it
Yeah man, I'm loving that invention - works so well and the soil stays in for a decent amount of time which means you don't get any good soil ending up in the barrow. Groovy
Built one of these almost 10 years ago, still works great, new drive belt, re-screened, and replaced a few casters, but no problems otherwise. It is called a "Trommel", mine uses a washing machine motor and bicycle rims with 1/2" x 1/2" wire screen. Have even loaned it out to a few neighbors, they couldn't believe was a Labor Saver it is.
Yes BigDog. I had one years ago too, if you look back in the older videos around 9 years ago you will see it I called it a trommel then too. but the reason I called it a soil sifter this time is that it got searched more in youtube and google than trommel did :) sorry for the late reply :)
Uk, No worries, I was merely pointing out another name for this contraption. They are used on a large scale in mining and milling operations. And hey, whatever name gets the most searches ! ! !
great video, id recommend either putting a tarp underneath or put a board underneath to catch the soil more than having to shovel again just a thought.

You certainly have to look after your back as a gardener. I have personal experience of that and why i build contraptions like this to make life easier
Thats a great Idea David. Anything that saves bending is a good thing. Once i use the sieve to remove most of the stone on the plot i will be building a few raised beds for carrot and parsnips and also one for my herb garden
Great video Tony. I remember your old one and the amount of work it done. This is the best sifter I have seen anyone build. I've recently got behind the real science of making good compost. I built a 3 bay compost area the first 2 bays are for building up the pile and then turning it between the 2 several times before it is sifted into the last bay which after a period of maturing coir, seaweed, rock dust and vermiculite or perlite is added. (tip here as vermiculite is expensive, Jewson and other builders merchants sell micafill for stove flue insulation. 100 ltr bag for 30 quid. its exactly the same stuff). I was always a bit dubious of the claims people made about making good compost in 6-8 weeks but it's really possible. A compost thermometer is key for when to turn it. around every 7-10 days in my case. turn it 4 times then it's done. It's like compost from the shop. my only problem is I'm still sifting it by hand with a standard round sieve. I did have a plan to build a much larger sieve on wheels in a frame which would help but the whole point of my plot is using all the best proven modern techniques and ruthless efficiency. so no weeding, no watering. everything automated but done extremely cheaply. This would be perfect to put over my final compost bay and save me a huge amount of work. I don't have mains power on my plot so I'd have to do it with a battery drill or dc motor but the rest the same. Thanks for the ideas!
This will be used at the allotment too, for compost sieving but bare in mind it can be run off an extremely small generator I could also add a smaller motor if i want to run dc or just add an invertor now and job done no generator needed
UK Here We Grow yeah good idea. I did pick up an inverter for solar and wind which will be going in somepoint in the future, too busy at most finishing a passive solar greenhouse. i could use that. suitcase generator would be good, I have been needing an escuse to get one for a little while. cheers mate.
I got sick of small hand held sieves so I cut out the bottom of an old wheelbarrow and replaced with welded mesh. Works an absolute treat but still back break rocking back n forth. I’m definitely considering building one of these!!! Good work 👍🏻
u move the whole barrow back and forth? oh god haha :p my sifters made with filler wood and i just grease 4 corners and it slides on top of the wheel barrow like an air hockey puck lol i can do it 1 haded if i want
Yes but your limited to lifting that on and off each time the barrow is full and when you have real rough soil or compost this will go through a barrow full in a couple seconds
Great video, Tony! Can't wait to start on this project! I've been hand-sifting my homemade compost for years. I aim for 150-200 gallons of finished compost every season and this will be a massive time (and back!) saver.
I have been thinking about a 2 x 2 frame; glad I came across yours. I will put my sheet of plywood on the inside of the frame so I don't have to clean the dirt off the lower cross member. Also, for the ends, I will use a locking gate hinge on each end of the lower and upper 2 x 2s so I can disassemble for easier storage; large lot, but minimal storage space. Great job; they work like a charm. Because my frame will be less sturdy, I will use pieces of 2 x 2 at a 45 degree angle to strengthen the side frames. Likely it will be mounted on saw horses; I really like your setup with wheels, but lack of space means set up and take down each time. I live in Oregon and the whole front yard needs sifting. Great job, great visuals helped tremendously. Thanks!
Thanks, Tim. Glad it was of interest. I built one around 6 years ago and picked up some ideas from that. the cross members wasn't an issue as its only 2x2 so won't hold a lot of soil and by placing it on the outside it was less intricate cuts so makes it easier for someone to follow the build. They really do make a hard job much quicker and easier. :)

Waw this is amazing! Wish I had one of these, currently digging and hand sifting what feels like 60% stone to soil ratio land at the moment 🥵 hard work but necessary as want to grow some veggies this year 💪🏼 will get there. Welsh soil is nutritious but very stoney where I am 🤦🏼♀️
Definitely could do with 1 of these, great little machine, I've just spent the last week or so digging and hand picking a ton of smaller rocks, big sandstone rocks, full and half house bricks, loads of weeds, plastic and even a few high heel shoes lol out of the garden of my new house. Ive got 2 areas each about 30m2 so I've seeded 1 area with grass seed and the other is for loads of lovely veg. These video's are coming in incredibly handy as ive never really grew any veg before, although my dad used to have an allotment ive never had green fingers. This lockdown though, got to keep busy somehow and I'm quite enjoying it. After digging all of the lawn side though and half of the veg side i had had enough of picking rubble out (and i had a HUGE pile of it) i decided to do the other half of the veg side as "no dig" so it will be interesting to see the difference between the areas.

Why not do it as an allotment project. let the site fund it and the members build it. A couple hours and it be done. Everyone can use it then for a nominal fee
I've seen videos of someone driving a sand sifter/rake on a beach. It is probably very expensive but if you have a large area to cover, may worth renting if you can find one. Or, make something that can be dragged by a small tractor.
its too bad the trommel doesn't have space underneath for a wheelbarrow to catch your beutiful screened soil. mounting the motor on the top is GENIUS! no dirt falling into and wrecking the motor. great video!

Surprised you didn't use treated timber for longevity. The extra price is still worth paying. Looks excellent. I was going to build one because of stones on my plot but power is an issue. Plus now I am No Dig convert.....👍

The device I’m making is for harvesting the composting worms that I raise and sell along with the worm cast that is separated and sifted at the same time. Should work very well and efficient I plan to run this by 12v input and motor (treadmill motor & controller) along with a battery bank 🏦 . I like the design of your set up, portable and lightweight. However my contraption will be longer.
I do need one, but I made (half way through ) a larger version using blue water containers, top and bottom off, hole-sawed over most surface area, the first with 1 inch holes, then another barrel left plain, and the third barrel with 2 inch holes. This 3 barrel tube is bolted together. I am yet to make the frame but I think I will only need to use some 4" poles spiked in the ground and some wheels, so not permanent, then a motor. This will separate my shale from my rocks and my rocks from my boulders!

Yeah I think the mic is on its way out again. I go through them so much, the prob is you never know until its too late. Im looking into getting some wireless mics so i can hook a transceiver on my back and job done
UK Here We Grow , I have done camera work for my sins. For simplicity I would opt for a recording device and use a laveler mic! A clapper board too. Synced in post it is a simple way of doing what you need with less batts. If your mic needs batts, I would Change them.

I could do one no prob...probably faster than you just did...just need to ask my dad to help me (and by help me, I mean that he plans it all out, and I perform the menial tasks)
G'Day from Aus. I was thinking that it might be better to have it set up so that you could place a wheel barrow underneath to catch the soil, It would mean, that you could then move the soil to any part of your garden. Just a thought.
Could do with one of those for my veg plot, it has no power so would need to run off the cars battery or cig lighter tho. Was going to do it by hand this year, but the bad back ain't up to it. Do you not get people local asking if they can hire it? I'd happily pay to hire if someone local had one.

UK Here We Grow I'm building tables to keep my pots seed trays etc on to save bending as you get older you need all the help you can get

its too bad the trommel doesn't have space underneath for a wheelbarrow to catch your beutiful screened soil. mounting the motor on the top is GENIUS! no dirt falling into and wrecking the motor. great video!

Surprised you didn't use treated timber for longevity. The extra price is still worth paying. Looks excellent. I was going to build one because of stones on my plot but power is an issue. Plus now I am No Dig convert.....👍

What’s your take on coating your wood with linseed oil to protect it from the elements? It dries, impregnates the wood, might be worth doing on this.

The device I’m making is for harvesting the composting worms that I raise and sell along with the worm cast that is separated and sifted at the same time. Should work very well and efficient I plan to run this by 12v input and motor (treadmill motor & controller) along with a battery bank 🏦 . I like the design of your set up, portable and lightweight. However my contraption will be longer.
Yes it will need to be much longer for worm collection but the principle is the same maybe a slower speed though around 15 rpm
I do need one, but I made (half way through ) a larger version using blue water containers, top and bottom off, hole-sawed over most surface area, the first with 1 inch holes, then another barrel left plain, and the third barrel with 2 inch holes. This 3 barrel tube is bolted together. I am yet to make the frame but I think I will only need to use some 4" poles spiked in the ground and some wheels, so not permanent, then a motor. This will separate my shale from my rocks and my rocks from my boulders!

Yeah I think the mic is on its way out again. I go through them so much, the prob is you never know until its too late. Im looking into getting some wireless mics so i can hook a transceiver on my back and job done
UK Here We Grow , I have done camera work for my sins. For simplicity I would opt for a recording device and use a laveler mic! A clapper board too. Synced in post it is a simple way of doing what you need with less batts. If your mic needs batts, I would Change them.
I use a zoom h4n and a lav mic, but i think the connecting on the jack is dodgy I always use fresh batteries . Thanks for the tips though :)

Its maily stone the weed can be rotted down but stone can be used to fix paths or used in bottoms of raised beds as drainage for herbs and stuff
I could do one no prob...probably faster than you just did...just need to ask my dad to help me (and by help me, I mean that he plans it all out, and I perform the menial tasks)

Taking that much out of the soil you are taking away for air to reach the roots of the plants. I would recommend a wider opening in the mesh.

Here's a possibly dumb question, but why does the soil only exit through the far end into the abrrel and not come flying out the entrance as well? Much appreaciated!
The wheels at the rear create a slight incline so the drum is not level its slightly leaning forward forcing the soil to run downhill with gravity
very neat but i have heavy ass rocks so need a really heavy duty screen.
Kevin just wrap it in a thicker gauge of steel if thats the case

Am i right in thinking the drum is ever so slightly sloped to help the rubble leave the drum?
The drum is level in the frame, but the rear 2 legs are raised the diamater of the wheel which is enough to get it to move through
