In The Manga though, it`s kinda weird because aside from her being his baby bro/descendant`s girlfriend and eventually wife as well as having a thousand-year age gap between them(Though to be fair Hao/Zeke looks a lot younger than he really is due to his voluntary reincarnation ability) he loves her because she reminds him of the mother whose persecution and burning at the stake because they thought she was a fox demon because they no longer remembered what shamans were and were influenced by Christian missionaries to view Hao`s symbol,the sacred elemental star or pentacle,as satanic. So Hao was bullied and ostracized from his village for centuries and over time the negative feelings and thoughts of humans poisoned his mind against all other humans aside from his fellow shamans and even them he came to see as merely vessels and pawns.
