Well to be fair this appears to be a much smaller model. I think the machine you are talking about is the bager 288 or 293 which are the biggest bucket wheels in the world. I still wonder how exactly that incident happend though.

I am sure this is one of the excavators at the open lignite mine near Simeonovgrad in Bulgaria. Zoom in on google earth and the huge white scar on the surface looks like clouds when viewed from space. 3 nearby power stations burn the lignite from direct rail deliveries.

See they don't actually rip apart land.They are more like excavators.They pickup dirt left behind and slowly break at it.However they are very inefficient for cutting right through thick stone like butter.They work slowly but in mass quantities being very efficient.
