More great stories from a great storyteller! This one was especially relatable for me. I got a game boy color for Christmas as a kid when we were dirt poor. It was the only console I had at the time and I basically worshipped it. I still have it to this day.

"If it's a Sunday, who cares?" I envy you. My entire week was basically dreading Sundays because of church. Then the high, immediately after going to church, was legendary. Best part of the week was immediately after church because it was the longest possible time before more church.

I'm lucky in that I only got forced to go to church a handful of times when my stepmother went through a thankfully-short spiritual phase. After having to go to school 5 days per week, I can't imagine having to go to church every Sunday on top of that.

Feel your pain. We went Monday, Wednesday , Sunday. There was no high for me. Moms still has que of scriptures on deck to fire off every single time I call. Which is right about now, actually. Hoping for Ecclesiastes, I guess.

I feel both sides of the coin. Church can be boring, but its all relative. There have been times in my life where I couldn't wait to get to church, for many reasons. But as a child, and even as an adult, it can certainly be unedifying.

Thank you for this episode, it called up a lot of memories! I am from Switzerland and had (have) a couple of cousins in New Jersey, which we visited yearly. We also did so at Christmas in 1989, the first Christmas after my Dad had passed away. I was 11 back then and my cousins all got Game Boys for Christmas so naturally I had to have one as well. I distinctly remember picking it up at Toys R' Us with my aunt and mom. I got Super Mario Land and Allyway to go along with it. I beat Super Mario Land on the flight back to Switzerland, literally half an hour before landing and on the last leg of the batteries. It was the first video game I ever beat and felt like quite the accomplishment. Back at school I was the most popular kid for 6 months because the Game Boy only came out in the summer of 1990 in Europe... In any case, thanks for what you do, I appreciate it a lot!

From what I can recall the original grey Gameboy was my first ever games console and just like you I got it for Christmas but I don't even remember asking for it and I think my mother got a bit upset because I wasn't really that fussed about it.
I remember getting the Gameboy colour many years later though and I lost my f**kin' MIND!!
I think it was because obviously at this point I was older and to have something smaller than the original grey one but that had colour graphics was mind blowing.

I had an early Gameboy as well. Mine didn't fail as badly as yours, but my screen became a mess of vertical and horizontal dead lines. I know they're fixable in one direction, but I had it both ways. That happened after a few years. I wonder if your issue was related to that. It was disappointing that the hardware had the flaw, but the system was fun while it lasted. And I really loved Super Mario Land. It's amazing how ridiculously tiny the ROM is.

I also was an early adopter of the Game Boy - got it for my birthday and I didn't know anyone else who had it. My strongest memory of it was when I stayed up late playing it on a school night (it was the day after my birthday). Unfortunately I had to keep the bedside lamp on to play it and my dad noticed the light from under the door. He stormed in the room and yelled at me. He said that it was probably a mistake to have given it to me and if he caught me playing it again after bedtime he'd get rid of it. It agitated me so much that I couldn't sleep that night!
Other than that, it was really cool at first playing Tetris and Super Mario Land. Later, I got Castlevania Adventure and I didn't care for it much. I remember there not being any other games that interested me, and I ending up selling the Game Boy and my three games a year later. I'm still trying to remember what I ended up buying with that money. It would have been a game that I really wanted or at least SOMETHING that I really wanted. I never sold any of my stuff unless that was the case.
Anyway, when Link's Awakening and the Mega Man games eventually came out, I wished I had held on to it.

Another great flashback episode. I asked for a Game Boy, but I never got one. I did have some of those Tiger handheld games you mentioned: Heavy Barrel, Double Dragon, Football and Skeet Shoot. I remember playing them a lot on long road trips. I'm guessing our relative satisfaction with those far cheaper systems probably made my parents feel getting Game Boy was needlessly expensive. Either way it didn't happen. I knew a few friends who had them and kind of like you said. No one seemed really envious of those who did; some of that may have been due to the fact everyone seemed to have the same games for it. Oh, Tetris? Super Mario Land? Oh, Zelda? And then always some random game like Kirby or something like that. But I would agree it wasn't the kind of system that made people really curious or want to watch you play games on it like your NES would. I used to peek at my gifts all of the time. My parents still tease me about it. I perfected unwrapping and re-wrapping gifts. My parents then began to deploy countermeasures like extra tape at key points to make it easily detectable if the wrapping had been tampered with. So I eventually gave up peeking, too much hassle. Another nice trip down memory lane! I'm glad you liked the magnet, I thought they were well done and I knew you'd appreciate the quality!

I'm sure you get a lot of requests and ideas for videos, but I'd like to know your opinion on maybe a top 10 games from any console that you just really enjoyed or loved to the point you would rank them above most others.
It doesn't have to be a list of what others believe to be cool games, but your favorites. I'd enjoy seeing that video from you.
Anyway, keep up the good work.

Also, while you’re here, I just wanted to say that I love your channel. I love listening to memories and stories like the ones on your flashback series. I guess I like to compare your experiences to British ones. I was born in 2001 but I was bought up by a family that wouldn’t get rid of anything (to give you an example we have a 1967 Mini in our garage that hasn’t been used since 1978) and using that ideology I can remember us having a huge wooden 1970s TV with a sliding door on the front, using cassette tapes and VHS pretty much daily and (most importantly) playing Sega MegaDrive (or Genesis in your part of the world, of course). It’s amazing that all the stuff that we kept but didn’t use for 30 years still works. This includes (what is now) my Beta, a few black and white 12” TVs, a couple of 80s HiFis and four 80s home computers (a Commodore 64, a Sinclair ZX Spectrum, an Acorn Electron and an Amstrad 6128, all dating from before 1986).

I AM wearing headphones and the stereo worked! Also, Mario's bouncy balls (lol) remind me of his cameo in Arkanoid with its similar appearance of Mario's bouncy balls. As far as your Game Boy memories go, what you say is absolutely right about kids' general reaction to the Game Boy. I only knew one kid who had it and it didn't make me want to get one at all. Also also, is that more Russian music similar to Tetris when Mario gets a power up? Nintendo must have really liked their Russian tunes around this time period.

I will never forget my first exposure to the Game Boy. Like you, my first experience was seeing it sitting behind glass at Toys R Us... right next to that sweet, sweet Power Glove. Oh how I wish there had been a playable display; perhaps then I would have been able to resist the dark magic spell that Power Glove marketing had cast upon me. Alas, my 8 year old mind was unable to comprehend what the Game Boy really was as it lay there lifeless in its cold, glass prison. A years worth of saved birthday and Christmas money entered the void that day as I made possibly the worst purchasing decision of my life and chose the Power Glove. I can still remember trying that abomination for the first time; the feeling of my hopeful optimism souring into crushing disappointment will be forever crystallized in my heart. That moment, more than any other, symbolizes the death of my childhood innocence; it's my "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine" moment. I never did get a Game Boy.

    • @timbsm
      @timbsm 5 лет назад

There is a flip side to this story. As bad as the Power Glove was as a game controller, it did make for a pretty awesome toy. I'm not sure how long it took, but I eventually ended up cutting the cord off and using it as an imaginative toy; my Zapper had the same fate. This would have been around the time that the Captain N: The Game Master cartoon came out, so a a cord-free Power Glove and Zapper allowed me to emulate that in pretty awesome fashion. I'm still pretty salty about not choosing the Game Boy, but this experience had a huge positive impact on my buying habits even to this day. I credit this experience with instilling the level of thoughtfulness I put into even the simplest purchasing situation; I'll spend quite some time considering my options on even the simplest items. This has served me well over the years as I tend to make very sound and well thought out decisions when it comes to buying stuff. Thanks Power Glove! @@CGQPlus
