  • Emotions are really complicated and interesting, which is why we’ve talked about them a lot here on SciShow Psych. In fact, we’ve talked about them so much that we’ve made a compilation of our favorite emotion-related videos!

    So I got a bit of a story here...
    Until I was about 12, I always hated that everyone could always tell how I felt. A lot of it was probably my parents sanctioning crying a lot. Aka you cry -> you don't get it. Keep crying -> they get very angry. You know, that sort of stuff. Anyway, then I got to high school and I got a friend who was extremely asocial. We got along well. Because of him I didn't just suppress my emotions, I stopped feeling them altogether. Except for stress and anger sometimes. Life was good except I was bad with people. Often got them upset with me and such.
    That all changed when the pandemic started and I became a furry. The wholesome type, that is. At first I was completely overwhelmed by the emotions everyone had, but eventually it grew on me and I can feel more than I have ever felt before. I was actually able to cry during movies, have my cheeks hurt from smiling too much. There was something that made me happy, finally. I have been able to help people through tough times. I was able to talk to someone about _my_ problems too. After years of what turns out to have been depression, I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
    Anyway my point is, emotional intelligence is definitely something you can gain from experiences. I went from "ugh such a bother, it's their own fault they're upset with me" to "aww come here lemme give you a hug" in about two weeks. This has happened half a year ago and everyone has noticed me finally occasionally smile and be less of a jerk, so I guess it worked.

    Thumbs up for recognizing Spock's Half Human Heritage! He totally struggled with his emotions throughout his life, and when his methods of control broke down, or he get side swiped by a particularly powerful emotion, he broke down and did not know how to function. This was a trait native to ALL vulcans, not just Spock. but he struggled more because he had even less control over his emotions over that of a pure Vulcan. He learned later on in his life that his emotions were a part of him and he should accept them, using them as a tool to interact with the world.

      Not sure if it was explained on-screen or just in the novels and such, but the original explanation was that Vulcans actually had much *stronger* emotions than humans, to the extent that they *had* to learn how to control them or they'd never have been able to stop fighting all the time and develop civilization. The Romulans were the branch that split off because they chose to embrace their emotions instead of suppress them. (Hmm, perhaps natural selection led to their emotions becoming a bit less overwhelming over time, otherwise they couldn't have become an empire...)

    • @MissingRaptor
      @MissingRaptor 3 года назад

      @@CritterKeeper01 yeah, it was in the TV shows/movies. But when Spock was going through his mental exercises on his terminal on Vulcan, he got stumped when the computer asked him "How do you feel?" Then his step mom (who was human) pointed out that since the computer knew that Spock was half human, it was asking him that question.

    Are likes/dislikes actually a representation of most people emotions and can we study it?

    • @annonimooseq1246
      @annonimooseq1246 5 лет назад +4

      ASHO well, I feel that the vast majority of dislikes are from anger, likes feels a little different, I usually like a video because either something stands out to me that makes me think “oh this is great! How can I show that I feel this way?”, I’m watching a video on a channel that I feel is under appreciated, some random thing like having good cc, or trying to train my RUclips recommendations. So I think that dislikes are usually a good indicator on how many people got angry at a video, likes are influenced by so many variables that it’s unfair to judge a video by them. Like, what would happen if two identical channels post the same videos, but one person has a little text at the end of all their videos saying some kind of “please like and subscribe “

    22:00 about music i hear, if i listen to a song from platforms doesnt help that much its sounds too flat even if its made good, but i found out if i made the music to 5.1 channel with 9 tracks and one track for middle speaker and 2 tracks for bass/subwoofer that are made to be more visible in each way but not too much and the stereo from the music splitted into 4 groups wich is two on the front tracks and two tracks in the back, while one of the tracks are widen/extended in stereo with a bit lower volume and closer towards middle to front/back tracks placing the sound of the 5.1 settings while the other track is normal and two more tracks front and back with mid equalizer set down a bit and with strong stereo, IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERNCE IN THE DEPHT of the sounds and it helps a bit better rather than sounding flat,,,,

    Like a toddler hearing about a natural disaster, they think about it but without context. They're apathetic & can not get stressed about it. They have no group, or set biological reactions happening, to then be labeled as emotional responses. I.e. when Cortisol & adrenalin are released together, we label that combination as stress. Because of the stress it puts on our biology?? Endorphin rush, we labeled that as happiness. Power of the mind!!! A WONDERFUL THING

    Scishow psych research question: preference for learning from fast-paced speakers. Crash Course (earlier videos), History Matters, etc - the content is excellent, but it's the pace that makes the content accessible to many of us. Fact, many of us speed up slower paced channels to be comfortable listening and learning. WHY? This is a very inconvenient trait to have. P.S. I have no trouble listening to people in daily life - first graders, senior folks, tired friends.... it's the learning aspect that's affected.

    Isn't amazing how much we seem to think some discoveries are new - but then you find it in the old book that most think it's useless. We are all made out of words, so for a moment think about that for a while. What is a word? Sound is an indicator of words not the dictator. What Jesus said was important - its what you say that kills or that gives life. Faith - which is your expected end comes in by hearing...I can go on and on - but I can never cover life time of lessons that this book is teaching us, we need to pay more attention to it - that may help a great deal on how we understand ourselves...

    The one talking about emotional expression and bottling has helped me realize that emotions in general are the problem. Other people's emotion, my emotions. Just ignore the idea that people feel things and move on. Being open about emotions and your emotional-mental state just gives more opportunity to be used against you and to give people the ability to mistreat you.

    I a,ways thought cute aggression was response to wanting to pass on our genes without competition. So we want to squeeze a cute thing to death so it can’t grow up to compete with our own babies. It’s messed up but it just makes biological sense.

    abusers apologize to make themselves feel better and ignore guilt
    abusers apologize with no compassion or empathy
    victims accept the apology often just to avoid more abuse
    or claim forgiveness and quietly plot revenge
    abusers conveniently forget
    victims forget to protect themselves
    but a victim, unless equipped appropriately, will carry the wound for the rest of their life
    and wonder why they just self-sabotaged for 20 years
    go find that little you with the tears and the heart racing...
    wondering if they really are bad, or why daddy is so mad... etc
    find that little one
    tell them they did nothing wrong
    hold them and let them cry, because you can't cry right now
    tell them anyone saying such mean things
    could never have been telling the truth
    parents make mistakes
    and you are a good person
