I’m excited to see how they grow too! Ginkgos are one of my top 3 favorite trees for sure! Thanks for your support as always, I always appreciate your continued optimism and positivity!
Veru cool Dave and it's great to aee that you got these Ginko seeds to germinate. It's always nice when you can start a tree from a collected seed and see it on its journey
Thanks! Yeah I really enjoy having the tree from day one. Most of my bonsai trees are pretty young now, but I am young in my bonsai journey as well, so it’s almost like the tree and myself can grow, develop, make mistakes, and make improvements in bonsai at the same rate! 😃
@@dreamingofbonsaiHey Dave, would you like to be part of an upcoming bonsai Collab that I'm putting together with a few other RUclipsrs. It's all about answering the question "what is a bonsai tree?" Feel free to em ail me if you want to be a part.
Thanks for sharing. I stumbled on some mushy yellow fruit two weeks ago, do they reek! Then I looked up and recognize it as a gingko tree, laden with yellow fruits. It was in a parkette 5 minutes from our house. So far have collected over 2000 seeds for "snack". Best roasted. As a child my mum used to put them in rice congee and there was no limit (before internet) :) With this impressive collection, I freeze them in freezer bags with a little bit of oil so it retains moisture. Now I will try to germinate some in the fridge. Great video.
@@busybutterfly3501 oh wow, that’s very interesting to hear about how you eat them. I’ve been very curious on the preparation of ginkgo seeds to eat. Thanks for sharing! And thanks for watching!
Thanks for video. I really appreciated you adding in the dates you did things. I just found female gingko, collected bunch of the fruit off ground and will follow your techniques. Maybe i will have babies next yr! Im in Alabama. It is now mid October.
Awesome! I’m glad you liked the video! Good luck with your ginkgos seeds, I hope you’ll have some roots coming out of the seeds in a few months! You are reminding me that I need to go check the ginkgo tree I got these seeds from and see if it dropped any seeds this year yet. 😊
I’ve grown Ginkgo from seed as well. While on a seed collecting lunch hour in Central Park, I discovered a cache of seeds after thinking I just stepped in dog poop (or perhaps slipped on a puddle of fermented parmigiana cheese). Unlike you, I was not brave enough to collect them, go back to work, and take the railroad home. I was then successful in finding a vendor on line selling cleaned seeds. I have 5 in the ground and an equal number in pots. Only one started as a bonsai so far. I also have a grafted, small leaf tree that I have to figure out a future for. I love the tree though. Great primer on what to do if you have the guts to do it!
Oh my gosh yeah I think you chose wisely on not collecting them for the train ride home, you may have gotten some strange looks from the other passengers! 🤣 I heard before that 10 percent of the trees in Manhattan are Ginkgos, which makes sense with their root systems! I always love visiting Manhattan in the fall when they have their yellow colors … it’s so beautiful! Your small leaf ginkgo sounds interesting, I’ll have to look into those. Thanks for checking out the video!
Have you ever left some of the seeds outside to winter over and see what germinates? Granted the day and night terrors might dig them out. Just a thought.
Hahaha yeah the squirrels and birds usually prevent me from keeping my seed bags outside. 😅 But I actually have one more large zippy bag of ginkgo seeds in peat moss outside covered up, so I’ll bring those back inside soon to warm up and see if they root out. 🤞🤞
Actually my parents used to have a Catalpa tree at their old house and I collected some seeds from that, but those didn’t take. That’s a good reminder though because I know of another Catalpa tree near me … I should take a walk soon and collect some seeds!
@@dreamingofbonsai I left mine outside to winter over and I have chicken wire covering the pot. Hoping for germination this spring. Pods contain those fine white seeds inside. It was hard for me to find a pod intact last fall. I was lucky to find some.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 that’s a good idea with the chicken wire. I’ll definitely be trying that this year. Hopefully you’ll have some nice seedlings soon!!
Repotting looking good for some nice spring growth. I cannot wait to see some summer growth out of these little gems. Great video.

Nice job Dave, I've got to admit I'm very jealous you have a ginkgo tree next to you and you can collect seed so freely.
Thanks! I am very grateful for it indeed, it’s an ancient tree too. The neighbors tree is probably well over 75 years old. It’s a beauty.
@@dreamingofbonsai you should do a video of your local trees you collect from. Especially that ginkgo 😁

Very jealous, ginkgo seeds in the UK are so hard to get hold of :/
Oh man that’s a bummer. 😢 Sorry to hear. I wonder why they are difficult to get?
@@dreamingofbonsai they're just costly. Saplings are like gold dust!
