Why Is The Minecraft Community So Toxic?

- I've always wondered if the community had been becoming increasingly more toxic or if it was just me. Turns out, the community's changed a lot in the past few years, and mostly not for the better.

Thanks dude, appreciate the support!
your content is certainly a breath of fresh air when it comes to minecraft, thanks man
Thanks man, I appreciate the reassurance that I'm doing something right at least.
@@Basegud i personally think you should be more well known, and i find it odd that you aren't, sucks that the algorithm would rather push repetitive SMP and 100 days content than yours
At least I enjoyed the newer updates, it’s such a shame of how the community don’t appreciate of what they have in the updates.
@@benlockwood886 it will forever baffle me that Mojang gives the community exactly what they want and yet the community will either say "We didn't ask for that" or "we want more you lazy bums!". Its crazy
@@Basegudthey should be ashamed to themselves, imagine they are developers at mojang working on a update, after they release the update, the community will go toxic and say “the devs are so lazy on these updates, we want more!” They will realise how the devs feel with this toxicity.
I feel like with modern minecraft SMP just feels so dry and boring. One of my friends got minecraft for me just to play on his server, but it got really boring after a week because they were all just really tryhard grinders who had all these fancy items and gear. They gave me an elytra, but it kind of just made the game boring and ruined the reason why I like minecraft; exploration. Why go explore when everything's already been explored by the people who constantly play on the server?
never have I ever read a truer statement my guy
i saw your comment on a video about how minecraft videos are all the same and how you made a hard but impactful choice. your story is just starting keep at it man you got a new watcher
I appreciate it my guy!
@@Basegud I'm also watching your vids now!
@@SpaceSoldier248Awesome news my guy! I appreciate it big time!
2 things, poor management on Microsoft’s end, and unrealistic expectations on our end! We’re already demanding an end update despite just getting the tricky trials update, and even then some people have issues with it, my only complaint is that the trails aren’t renewable, once you’ve done it, it’s over, no key respawns, no more loot, it’s basically a one, and done deal.
Everything else you said, I agree with, but I watch positive videos sometimes.
@@loganwolverine5849 About the trial chambers, you do get loot from them on repeat clears, the spawners drop things when you kill all its mobs. The vaults however don't and that is really the one thing that people come for.
I agree. I hate when a friend speedruns for gear and villagers and then flexes on people that they are bad. Before speedrunning players did not speedrun every aspect of the game. Great explanation to sum it up.
Yeah, its unfortunate to see, but its the truth
Yeah, speedrunning and the 100 days crap was the biggest mistake ever brought into the community.
@@Thunderbolt18367for me 100 days isn't that bad.
@@RealRohes
Yeah, it’s definitely not terrible, but it does serve a problem as you’re rushing the game, just like speedrunning. The only difference is that at least it gives you time to do other things in the game
I've been playing Counter-Strike for years, I thrive in toxicity, but modern Minecraft discourse is a whole different kind of toxic. It honestly just feels like nobody ever enjoyed the game in the first place and they're all forced to play it, the way they talk about it. Like seriously, you hate the new updates that much? Just revert to an old one or play another goddamn game lmao.
I agree with you on that. One thing I would say though is that some people are not hating on Mojang, but rather they're criticizing them. I think its perfectly valid to give criticism, because it can help make it better. In Mojangs case, there are a LOT of things they could be doing better right now. One thing that comes to mind is communication on things like unimplemented features that have basically been in development purgatory for over 3 years at this point.
@@Basegud There's absolutely shit to criticise Mojang for, especially like you mention, the lack of transparency with their process and the features. Notch was a lot better at interacting with the community, sometimes for the better, often for the worse lol. But the way it's done, it doesn't feel like critique, just feels like people who are tired of playing the game and want a new one, but instead of playing a new game, they demand Mojang make Minecraft a new game every update.
@@plebisMaximusThen part of the community whines when a new update comes out. Honestly it's confusing me and giving me a headache. Like, what do ya'll want?? Minecraft to stay classic or make every update make the game feel new??? And the way the community sees itself and mojang like they're just two gigantic hiveminds is awful. The community is a community, many groups making up a single gigantic group, and to see them see themselves as the all-knowing single-opinionated people is ridiculous. Then how they see mojang as a single company and not different teams working in the same studio. There's the marketing team, dev team, designer team, media team, and all other teams they have. To blame the whole mojang for releasing crap when truth is that the devs are limited by higher ranks or a few laws.
@@MrBrineplays_I think mostly everyone sees any corporation as just a single entity. So I don’t think that’s really an issue with the Minecraft Community, just an issue with how people see corporations, not as a group of people like them, but a single emotionless being unlike them.
@@thecreatorofpc7929 Yeah you're right. And the corporation sees the community as one being too.
I hate people who thinks Mojang is lazy they should try game development I am a game developer and it takes forever to make a game or update it, and Mojang is a big company so they NEED to make sure the update had no bugs, and if ur comparing Mojang to other companies that release big updates that's because Mojang is the only big game company that doesn't overwork their employees
Exactly, I heard from somewhere that the Red Dead Redemption series dev team was overworked to death simply to add 2 black bars to all the cutscenes, which is honestly just kinda funny to me
Exactly, I heard from somewhere that the Red Dead Redemption series dev team was overworked to death simply to add 2 black bars to all the cutscenes, which is honestly just kinda funny to me
Idk it depends one wher your looking. And its not ljke there isnt valid criticism to mojang. Like slow updates with lacking features. Also how they go about these updates. Agsin game dev is hard but so is a multitude of other professions. The points is that why are the updates both slow and lacking. In this video it was mentioned that its because of the commjnity complaining but from my memory the reason mojang has given as to some of their choices was kinda just bad. It almost sounded like a lie. Like how they didnt want to add fire flies to minecraft becaus "they would hurt frogs". What?? Like huh. Is that really a good reason? Its almost hypocritical too. Just giving my two cents.
@@putent9623
But even then, the community blew that situation out of proportion. It’s only two pixels. It doesn’t matter on how easy y’all think it is to code or how simple it is, it’s literally just a spec. You guys were furious over two squares.
Would you rather want an update with no polish but includes tons of content or a update with less content but is more polished?@@putent9623
I have honestly felt the same way. And I feel like sometimes people need to chill out. Because I'm worried how new players are going to see the Minecraft Community. If they see all of the toxic people in this community, I would believe those new players would be like "My god! What is wrong with those people. I'm going to go and play ROBLOX instead of Minecraft. And I can't blame them. Because I would do it too.
I feel like some people just need to get off of social media like Reddit, Twitter and RUclips and just play Minecraft casually instead. Or if that isn't enough for you, just take a take a step back, and take a deep breath. Because it's probably not the end of the world. In fact let me tell you a story. Back in 2023 I was very obsessed with the Mob Votes. I was so obsessed that I was becoming drained from Minecraft in general. And I was wondering, why. So I looked within myself mentality and I realized that the Mob Votes are the issue. So ever since then, I had continued to vote in mob votes, but I never debated my options to others on social media. Because it was pointless. And also, I realized who would even care about my opinion on a mob in a block game anyways. And that same principle goes for any other debate in the community. Because more importantly, who would even care about these debates? Its pointless. Besides, I'm a casual player. I play Minecraft because I love building and expanding my creativity on what I can and can't do. I love challenging myself to make big things, complicated things and everything else under the sun. And I feel like others should do the same. I'm happy to be a Minecraft player. I have been apart of this community since 2011. And I'm still happy to still be around after all this time.
Sorry if this is to long. I just wanted to get my feelings out about what I think about this topic personally. Thank you for reading this. 😊👍
Love to hear stuff from my fellow 2011 players! You're absolutely right too. The internet has bred this brand of people who all they do is talk shit and have to one up you on everything. These people will not let you enjoy anything if your view even slightly does not align perfectly with theirs and its fucking annoying as hell. Who says your view is right anyway? Maybe mine is, or maybe we're both wrong and the guy over there has the rigtht one! Maybe there ISN'T a right view, which is how I think Minecraft is supposed to be.
I think another reason for the toxic environment of the Minecraft Community is because the hardcore players that talk and chat about Minecraft that is usually on Reddit, Twiiter and RUclips, usually those players live in an echo chamber. And when you live in an echo chamber you sometimes forget that your talking to real people or in fact don't realize that they have life's out side of Minecraft discussions. There is a difference between being critical to someone and being hateful just for the sake of being hateful. For example, there was a bunch of people on Twitter during the Mob Vote of 2023, and that these people said something that was so awful that I actually had to double read it again just for clarity.
They said, " Not everyone's opinions are equal value" or this, "Why should the results be decided by all the casuals that don't care?" And let me remind you, these are actually human beings that said these comments directly over a mob vote that didn't matter and was meant to be for fun. I know they might be dedicated to this game, but for crying out loud, chill out. You have no right to demonize others just because your frustrated about a mob losing in a pole. In fact these comments came and effected me as well. Because why should I vote in a pole for a fun mob, if your going to take it so seriously to the point of demonizing others just because you wont accept the reality that your mob loss? It's just so frustrating that its starting to become an actual nuclear hell hole to be in.
I might like Minecraft, but I can't just watch this and allow it to eat me alive. Honestly I want to this sort of toxic culture to go away, but it becoming harder and harder bye the day. Even if I can't change it, I hope someone else does. I'm sorry, I just can't take it anymore.
Last minecraft live's chat was the biggest cesspool I've ever seen Jesus Christ...
I'm pretty sure they had live chat off did they not?
@@Basegud they had minecraft live's chat on and guess what that means? thousands of ungrateful people spamming 'stop the mob vote' by the second. people were also literally making political posters and petitions to stop the mob vote. it really got way out of hand, im just hoping that doesn't happen this october...
STILL BETTER THAN POKEMON
@autismandgaming4532 honestly, at this point I don't know which community is more toxic.
great video. there are some really good points i never even thought about. i want to add: there are tons of people who somehow feel personally insulted when someone criticizes minecraft. put that together with a lot of people criticizing minecraft, and you get a lot of toxicity being thrown in both directions.
imo there's a lot to criticize about modern minecraft, but it's not the speed/amount of getting new features. i think if mojang started adding much more stuff each update, lots of people would get overwhelmed by it. (they already are in many cases)
regardless what side you're on, there's no need to be toxic. people just have different tastes and opinions and there's no reason to be insulted by that (and even less to insult others because of it).
A lot of the SMPs are improvisation and roleplaying, but there are definitely some where it's just toxicity. There is also no right or wrong way to play Minecraft, you can do whatever you want in the right context (as is the case with survival challenges and speedruns)
I think Minecraft is one of the most toxic communities I've ever seen. It's not even funny anymore. I've never witnessed so much hate, slander, and just being plain mean to other players before. It's terrible. I do agree that the size is one of the factors, because it is MASSIVE. One of the most famous and recognizable games of the 21st century. I've been playing the game since 2014. And man back then it was so wholesome and peaceful. Servers were friendly, it was adventurous and exciting to build creations with your friends, getting to explore. As mineplex and hypixel grew, I played a lot of bedwars and back then, older times it was so fun. You can normally win most matches.
Now, you are lucky if a match lasts five minutes. It's full of hackers, cheaters, sweats that insult you constantly. It's just sad that it gives a person an excuse to be an asshole just because there cowering behind a screen. Usually there just actual jerks in real life and think since there playing a game that it doesn't matter. I definitely think video games in general are toxic more often than they were even six years ago. It’s sad how the gaming community has become. Of course I don’t think video games are bad for you, I play them a lot on PC or my Ps5. But it’s not as fun to play many games anymore, mainly multiplayer ones. I don't go on hypixel anymore or play cod or anything. And the whole study that playing violent video games results into violence in real life is complete bull shit. There is no steady source that proves that. But the toxic stream of any gamers, hackers, try hards are terrible today. Video games were designed to be fun, to play with your friends, and create things. Not to insult and make fun of others. It’s really sad man. It’s like video games give people the excuse to be an asshole. I think that it falls under people that are competitive naturally and want to win. Which makes sense, we are humans by nature and want to claim victory over things, even small things. It’s what makes us interesting and destructive at the same time.
A lot of it I think stems from the certain games you play will have the effect of toxic behavior. Minecraft now is horribly toxic, unless you are playing single player with one friend or alone.. Now it’s filled with cheaters that tell you cringe insults that: “Your so bad,” or “Loser,” or “kill yourself.” It’s insane. I’ve just stopped playing hypixel bed wars now and just stick to single player cause I would rather have a good game that I enjoy than have some squeaky guy scream at me to build faster.
Same is for others like COD, chivalry 2, PuBG, Fortnite, anything that involves a lot of players online. I have been getting into chiv 2 a lot because I like sword fighting, history and medieval time periods. It’s fun to play, hack, win matches, sieges, but the community is toxic as hell. I one time, beat this guy in a 1v1 duel by sheer luck and countering with a double bladed axe. After it ended, he personally sent me a message on my Ps5, calling me trash when I just beat him. I just try to ignore it. Most players like that are no lifers and assholes in reality, that hide and cower behind a screen.
It’s just pathetic that gaming and the community has died and faded to hackers and toxic matches where it’s just not enjoyable anymore. That’s why I stick to single player and open world games now. But great video!
Well said. I enjoyed reading this because I whole heartedly agree! I just don't get why people feel the need to be this toxic, it doesn't change anything!
the Minecraft community is why I never join fandoms or even acknowledge them.
Minecraft has bad people but at least you are allowed to do it alone and play with good people
UNLIKE ROBLOX 1/3 of the community is children 1/3 of the community is online daters 1/3 of the community is people are stock people who want all the robux and most private servers are not free or not available. Mojang is good unlike ROBLOX people THEY they try to make toxicity to go on don't believe me? they made public ugc which now I'm going to stop don't want to get into all the bad game developers and all the people spamming ban and it working all because they said HI
That's why I think people may be going a little overboard saying Minecraft players are toxic because if you look at Roblox there are people that find ways to get past the moderation system To SAY the worst words you have ever seen
@@heyman000
Yeah, but still. At least Roblox and its player base is able to appreciate the game more than the minecraft community
@@heyman000 Yeah of course, depending on the game mode you play in Roblox. I’ve been playing Roblox lately. Not one of my fav games but it’s fun nonetheless. I have not met very many toxic players in Roblox. Most of them have been friendly and nice to me. Players don’t appreciate Minecraft anymore like they used too and they trash new updates. I do agree with you that some areas in Roblox are highly negative. Like it’s version of bed wars. Toxic just like Mc. But Roblox as a whole is a lot more open and wholesome than most other games. Fortnite I refuse to play. It’s overrated. Full of losers who will spend thousands of dollars on custom skins. COD is worse. One time I played on this server with a few friends. It was private but some guy got in somehow, began to burn peoples houses and stealing their loot. We suspected he hacked his way in. Know idea how, but it happened and it was beyond annoying. Took us 30 min to finally ban him as he kept joining then leaving then joining again. Minecraft isn’t fun anymore. It’s not the same as it used to be.
It's actually crazy how annoyingly crazy the community has gotten these past couple of years. The community has far too many useless debates, and if you saw the smallest glimpse of Minecraft Live's chat last year... There were people ruthlessly demanding Mojang to stop the mob vote every single fraction of a second. I'd say the biggest issue right now is the community pounding Mojang with backlash, which mostly comes from people calling their development style lazy.
In fact, I've seen people call 1.21 awful (an absurd take) even if the update has something for everyone (Builders - copper and tuff variants ||| Redstoners -- copper bulb and crafter ||| Explorers --- trial chambers ||| PvP --- the Mace and Wind Charge ||| Datapack creators/modders --- loads of technical changes).
This is because of Issue #1: players underestimate the work Mojang puts in for every single feature: bugfixes, snapshot cycle, developing ideas (and if they are bad, over 200 million people will be mad), version parity, and coding (no seriously, they have to do it across 2 different programming languages and 7 different devices). Not to mention most of their development team doesn't even work on Minecraft, rather Minecraft Dungeons and Legends. Programming is harder than people think, and before you say modders can do it better than Mojang (respect to modders despite how I'm gonna sound) modders don't really have to do any of the above other than developing ideas...
...and Issue #2: When people criticize Mojang's development style, they bring up solutions for (and criticize Mojang for not) having Minecraft as an RPG game. This is problematic because Minecraft is, at its core, a SANDBOX game and NOT a SURVIVAL game. People can play Minecraft as a survival game but when they don't make the most of it they shouldn't criticize Mojang for it. Criticizing Minecraft for not being enough like a RPG is like criticizing Tetris for not being enough like an action-adventure game. Basically the problem is people want Minecraft to be like Minecraft Dungeons or Terraria (and I know Terraria is a sandbox game but it's much more RPG-ish than Minecraft)
TL;DR the community is toxic because they don't understand that Mojang's development process doesn't come with many hurdles, and because they want Minecraft to become an RPG (which it isn't, it's a sandbox game). Also if you actually read all that sorry for putting you through torture 🙏🏽
Nothing but fax!!
Very true
And it may also be the community's own greed that is also making them so toxic
What I find worse the community literally faking all the bad stuff Mojang does, like remember the gun ban controversy? That never happened it was a lie made up to spread hate. The community did the equivalent to a false flag attack
gigachad.png
I feel like a lot of these modern players and speed runners who think they’re really good or try to be toxic would get destroyed by players in 2 b2t
I don't think getting destroyed by 2b2t players is a metric of skill considering they have hacks instead of skill though
Bro the part with minecraft servers is so relatable, I was having so much fun playing a towny server with my cousin 3 years ago. It was much diffrent the people were building stuff and they were nice to us but now every single server is just pvp p2w brainrot and all peaceful server genres are wiped dead. Minecraft multiplayer is in ruins and that's all thanks to the community. 😢
Wish we could go back to the old days where people knew what having a heart was, not just in gaming, but in everything in life
7:30 Nah the reason they seem lazy is Microsoft being bureaucratic and denying almost all proposed changes by the dev team.
I don't quite know about that one bud, but that may be the case. From what I've heard Microsoft has been pretty hands off about the actual development side of the game and are only the puppet master on things like monetization opportunities or account stuff
At least 4 people are sane now.
Theres 3 others!?
in fairness i like smp content, i like the war stories and finding new and unique ways to achieve cool things, i just feel like this community loves drama and sparks it anywhere possible and thats the problem not smp content, pvp or anything like it
Well, you're not wrong. I do in fact wish that this community would just ignore drama though. Its so sad to see people tear each other apart over stupid shit.
Yeah people really underappreciate what you get when you pay for Minecraft. Like every version past, present, in future is something you don't really see nowadays. Though I imagine Microsoft is going to pull a Microsoft eventually
Fr, its really incredible that after all this time updates are still free, but in all honesty Minecraft has been sold so much that they don't need to charge for updates lol
Thing is though, most of this does seem to be a vocal minority. Sure there is thousands of people saying this, but it's thousands of 300 million+. I'm sure at least a large chunks of players out there are still contempt with updates being not as large & hosting slower, more peaceful SMPs
It sounds like you haven’t even heard of about half of the major Smps. Yes, when you get to stuff like lifesteal it is about killing each other. However, smps like hermitcraft or the empires or really anyone along those content groups, You don’t see much toxicity neither was there much toxicity with some less or known smps like dominion SMP. I don’t know since I only really look at the storytelling/role-play side of Minecraft. I don’t really see much of the toxicity. Maybe it’s just the speed runner/PVP content creators/viewers that this is a major problem with?
Comments like yours are why I make content, because I enjoy discussions within the community! I myself don't really consume smp content all that much anymore. For that reason, I don't really tend to explore the whole smp content side of youtube, so I mainly see what youtube is pushing, and what I see is all the garbage that I stated in the video because that seems to be whats hip and cool right now. Its sad because I know for a fact that there is a lot of good content buried under the massive heaps of money hungry trash, I just wish we'd see more of it promoted to the masses y'know?
@basegud Fair point the algorithm sucks I’m not even sure it pushes what’s actually popular in the sense of engagement rather than clicks. I usually only see the Minecraft but…. Challenges or clip channels. That type of content is only popular because most people don’t have an attention span for big story arcs sadly.
every community is toxic
REAL
Not as toxic as Pokemon tbf
Don't even get me started about the Java vs Bedrock debate. It's so stupid to argue which edition is better because all of us have personal preferences! If you enjoy Java, good! If you enjoy Bedrock, good! If you enjoy both, also good! This argument gets so heated that they would get to the point that we Bedrock players are called peasants just because we don't play the "superior" Java Edition, like come on it's not that deep, it's just a silly block game!

I miss when the Minecraft community was known as the least toxic fanbase. What happened man. It got to the point where they start hating Mojang. The devs that made the game in the first place. Like whenever they add or don’t add something that they ask for. They start hating on it to the point where they get called lazy even tho they have to bug fix everyday and even more work with 2 versions and even if you don’t prefer the new version. There’s the launcher. And the community themselves start misunderstanding what the game is. It’s everything. Not a progression game tho it does have progression aspects but you don’t have to fight the dragon but you can instead make structures or make mini games (My fav) or take challenges or heck. Play creative mode. I hope one day the Minecraft community can think about their childish acts and go back to being the respectful and talented community it once was

On the Dream faking a speedrun, I don't think it was intentional.
It seems that it was to do with a mod Dream had used in his manhunt videos to increase luck to make the manhunts easier to record and he mistakingly included it in his Fabric instance.
Dream seems like a bright guy, I don't think he would do something that can easily be scrutinized by Speedrun moderators, and would get him caught.
pretty sure the smp i play on is oike an exception maybe but gor all the servers we've had like all that lore stuff but we do live in communities a lot of the time and it's really fun there wr wof cpurse pkayers who base far away (i was one of then during the last season) but they're usually the exception

How you’re using bundles? Is that just the snapshot? Or some mod
Inside of the latest releases of Minecraft you'll find the experiments tab when you go to make a world and in it you can enable bundles. Its really just a datapack that switches on and off though.
Try roleplay geopol servers. Tho here you will find massive competition too. But ig it's human nature to be competitive and there are always few people who aren't best in the world.
The minecraft PVP community is easily the most toxic game community ever, I've play tarkov, rust, MW2, and none of them close to minecraft. Community isn't toxic. Minecraft is a sandbox RPG and the RPG players are tired and displeased with the lack of content that Microsoft gives them. The last update that gave anything to the RPG players of Minecraft before trial chambers was the nether update.
If you look back, Minecraft was always designed with two audiences in mind the externally motivated and the intrinsically motivated. The externally motivated players barely get content in the game anymore.

I'll admit that I forgot about Hermitcraft, but lets not kid ourselves here, the majority of smp content coming out these days, is the same recycled crap. Smps like Hermitcraft are certainly the saving grace in this category of content, but unfortunately they're only one smp compared to the literal hundreds of other smps out there that unfortunately get more attention than it simply because its whats hip right now. no lmao the minecraft pvp community is easiest one of the most toxic game communities ever. people be ddosing people and leaking irl bases because of tier list fights 😭🙏🏻
you call that toxic? Bro, pls don't start playing Destiny 2 xD It's for your well-being xD
Don't worry, one of my friends tried to get me to play that game for years. I never caved, so I'm safe :)
@Basegud i do love D2, but damn some of this community need to go to a therapist
@@kisoya1087if you had to rate which community is worse, D2 or Dream Stans, which one would you pick?
@Basegud I actually don't know Dream Stans, but I know that I've never saw any other community as toxic like D2..
I've played Destiny 2. It is no were near the deepest toxic part of Minecraft in which I've seen people get doxed, groomed, DDoS'd and getting their PC ratted
