We have just completed an amazing 7-day road trip from Qatar to Oman, covering a total distance of 3255km and creating countless unforgettable memories.
One of the highlights was travelling through the newly opened Rub al Khali (The Empty Quarter) road.
The Empty Quarter Road is a unique and thrilling route that runs through the vast desert wilderness of the Arabian Peninsula, connecting Qatar and Oman. This road trip takes travelers through a remote and rugged landscape, with stunning views of towering sand dunes, rocky mountains, and endless stretches of barren desert.
Starting from Qatar, the journey typically begins in the capital city of Doha and proceeds southward towards the border with Saudi Arabia. From there, the road continues through the Rub' al Khali.
The road trip from Qatar to Oman through the Empty Quarter Road is a truly unique and unforgettable adventure, offering a rare glimpse into the raw beauty and harsh realities of desert life.
For those considering a Qatar-Oman road trip and planning to take this route, here are a few things to keep in mind:
1 . The drive through the barren Rub al Khali desert, starting from Qatar, is a single stretch of approximately 670 kilometers. During the journey, there are no amenities available except for a petrol station called Z Oil Petrol Station, which is located approximately 370km away from Salwa Port.
2 . While the Z Oil Petrol Station does have a couple of restaurants, I would recommend bringing your favorite food from Qatar or Ibri when you return.
3 . Rub al Khali is a two-way road that sees a significant amount of truck traffic. It's important to exercise caution while driving and, if possible, avoid traveling at night.
4 . Beware of sandstorms, as they tend to worsen at night. If visibility starts to diminish, it's advisable to pull over to the side of the road and wait until conditions improve before continuing your journey.
5 . If you are a resident of GCC countries (in our case QID holders), you can obtain an Oman visa on arrival free of charge if your stay is less than two weeks. Alternatively, you can opt for a one-month visa for OMR 5 (equivalent to QAR 50).
6 . Upon your return, anticipate some delays as you will need to pass through Saudi Arabia again after exiting Oman. Your vehicle will be screened in a dedicated X-ray slot, so it's important to be patient. You may encounter some screening staff who can be rude and speak abruptly, telling you to “aage", "peeche," but try to remain calm and cooperative.
7 . It's important to note that the speed limit on Rub al Khali road is 90km/h. Please ensure that you always drive within the speed limit.

Hi. For oman on arrival visa , hotel booking kaanikkano ? If i am going to meet my parents for 3 days by road from qatar what will i do ? Is hotel booking for 3 days mandatory ?
In case they ask for hotel booking, you can explain them the options of staying with your parents/siblings etc. If possible, ask your family in Oman to send you their accommodation proof.

Yes, Saudi entry visa and insurance are required.

What about the mobile network for Qatar Sim?
Google map..It's better to buy a Oman sim, you will get it for OMR 5 (QAR50). As for Qatar sim, we couldn't make/receive calls/use data when we were in Oman so we can't rely on it.

Day 1:
7am: To Salwa Port
Lunch at Z Oil Petrol Station -Empty Quarter Road (subject to change according to border passing process)
Overnight stay at Ibri
Day 2:
8am drive from Ibri to Nizwa (130km)
On the way:
1.Misfat Al Abriyeen
2. Al Hamra Village
3. Al Hoota Cave (inside Al Hamra Village)
4. Bahla Fort
5. Jebel Akhdar /Jebel Shams
6. Finally, UNESCO listed Vadi (ഇവിടെ കുളിക്കാം)
Overnight stay at Nizwa
Day 3:
8am Drive from Nizwa to Muscat (156km).
Check in Muscat hotel
Spend 2 days (day 3, 4) at Muscat.
Day 3
1. Yacht Trip
2. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
3. Muthra Souq (ideal for shopping-household goods, clothing, spices, antiques)
4. Mutrah Fort (next to Muthra Souq).
Day 4
1. Al Mirani Fort
2. Al Alam Palace
3. National Museum
4. Wadi Dayqah Dam (111km from Muscat).
Day 5 -
Check out hotel in the morning.
Return to Doha via Rustaq (Muscat to Rustaq 125km, Rustaq to Ibri 125km).
On the way explore Al Kasfah hot water spring

It varies from person to person. However, food, hotels etc. are comparatively cheaper in Oman. For Qr 200 you will get nice hotel rooms for a family. All the best for your trip :)

No need. Try to fill full at Qatar border, and please don't miss Z oil petrol station located in the middle of Empty Quarter road. Have a safe trip.
Absolutely avoid taking this road unless it's absolutely unavoidable. If you must take it, be prepared for the following:
- The road is excessively long and imposes a speed limit of 100km/h.
- Service stops along this route are virtually non-existent.
- Expect very high temperatures between May and September.
- There are no streetlights on the road.
- It's a two-way traffic road.
- There are no emergency stations available.
- The road is frequently covered in sand.
- Prepare for a lack of traffic and highway signage.
- Expect the journey to the Omani side to take up to 8 hours.
- No GPS unless you have loaded the maps in advance or got a signal!

As far as I know minimum of 3 months GCC resident validity is required. You may please double check with other sources.

If you have valid GCC resident permit (QID for Qatar residents) you can get visa on arrival free of cost for 14 days. If you want to stay more than two weeks, you can request for one month visa for OMR5 (QAR 50). Oman car insurance charge is OMR15 (QAR 150).

Hello @shehab7665. All of our team members passport had long validity date at the time of our trip, however, as far as I know, your passport should have at least 6 months' validity remaining on your date of entry to Oman.

It's around 1000 kms. In Oman, the first city to reach is Ibri.
