Impossibly impressive...seems like his fingers are fighting the guitar but the body and voice are floating above it all to nail “the thing of it” that makes this version transcendent. So great. 😢
Well said. I didn’t know he even existed until I saw a story that he died and then I began listening to him. It’s not music I typically listen to, but he is so gifted and how can you not want to listen to him.
This is my favorite artist doing one of my favorite songs. Two of my favorite things in the world combining like it was meant for me. one of those videos that i cant explain how much i appreciate it being posted. I dearly, dearly thank you for sharing this moment.
So sad, so brilliant. I didn’t know this song (embarrassed to admit), but what an emotional version it is. Justin always manages to impart raw emotion and sadness in his music and it brings me to tears. But at the same time as feeling sad for his premature passing I feel supremely grateful for having access to such heavenly material. It really is out of this world. Another level. Would love to have seen him perform live.
I see a lot of people raving about Springsteen covers on RUclips, but this one actually is really really good. I don't know about it being better than Springsteen's version, I think you still have to give the nod to the person who actually wrote the music, arrangement and lyrics. This is great through.
There’s an old video of Josh Ritter covering “The River”, where he’s just playing it in someone’s living room, just casual jam session vibes. It’s still on RUclips, if you search “Josh Ritter covers Springsteen in The Apartment”- check it out. It’s another transcendant Boss cover.
When Bruce sings this it sounds like he is living it in the present and looking ahead to the future in parts, while this version seems more melancholy from a perspective of looking back into the past.
Saw the truly unique JTE in my hometown of Glasgow, Scotland last night- a privilege indeed! I know (and love) this original song well and this is a very beautiful rendition. It's lovely to experience music so raw and honest.
No doubt. He is unique, & he puts on this great performance. Very retro in his vibe. I would go see him again in a minute. I took my son for his first concert to see JTE, cause he wanted to go with me. We got in front of the stage for the whole concert. It was amazing..& my son, along with me was thrilled we got to see him perform
May your sweet soul rest peacefully. We thank you, Mr. Justin Townes Earle for the moments. You left us far too soon but a piece of you will always remain. You will never be forgotten. May your sweet soul rest in peace for all eternity. Sláinte Chugat... 🍀 🎶 💜 🍀
brings a tear when JTE gets going in that groove. the guy was working record shops, libraries and book stores. he tried. but i guess it was just not working for him. so sad. brings a tear. thumbs up.

@@holyworrier Then every single transcriber has been wrong on this one, including the liner notes from "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" because there's not a single example of it with "aches" in place of "hate." @Valerie Barber - is there anyway you could make me a DVD of your youtube vids from the library concert? I'm a huge JTE fan, and i'd like to take it to show my grandparents, but they have no internet and no computer....
Mmm. Sorry. My experience with this version is, it's really, really, really, bad. Droney and emotionless. And the near ukelele acoustic is grating. Check out EmmyLou or Micky and the Motorcars.
Well I have to say I agree with you on some things. I don't think this is a particularly bad cover, but I also don't like the guitar playing and I miss a little emotion too.
JTE was an amazing songwriter and I had the privilege to see him a few times.. i'm in tears today
Im still in tears 😢 a phenomenal songwriter
His name sake Townes Van Zandt did a cover of this as well
Gone 4 years today. Crazy how this song pops up on my feed again today. RIP
I was at this show. 2 hour drive. Thankful
You were so lucky. I would have driven right around the world to see this show. I hope it stays up on RUclips forever.
I was at this show too. I think it was around 1.5 hours for us in PA. Such a great show.
The world has lost another giant. Rest in peace JTE
Oh my god this one hits different now. His voice was so pure. Jesus... it still hurts. 😭

I love this cover. He does it justice for sure.
I never met this man but my heart is breaking
2020 was such a bastard. RIP young man. 🙏 ❤

I agree it’s an excellent cover. He did justice to an incredible song. But Springsteen’s original will never be bettered imo

I love his cover of this so much. Simply beautiful.
great rendition man - this kid just keeps doing both of his namesakes proud.

So succinct, well honed and perfect! Beauty in simplicity....

Justin Townes Earle, the most beautiful voice going - it breaks your heart every time.

Does he still like Justin? (Or Townes Van Zant and Steve Earl for that matter.) I hope so.

Love it ..thank you so much for posting this

I can feel god and all of the universe when I listen to him.
this is just a wonderful cover
"with the eyes of one who hates for just bein' born.."
It's not "hates" but rather, "aches". Makes better sense.

Awe man,..I really love this song.Justin does it really good!
Love it! I was there! :)
I saw Justin perform Townes' Rex's Blues with similar intensity as an encore- mesmerizing
we shut 'em up and then we shut 'em down....whooooowwww...I felt that!!
I love you Justin . I’m so sorry
A perfect song today
Townes covered this as well..like this sad captures essence of darkness on edge of town 😢
We shut em up and then we shut em down.
american poetry.
Damit, just Damit Justin 🥵🥰
RIP. Gone too soon.
This is a good one. I think many of his ballad type songs sound a lot like Springsteen. First time I heard him I thought was Bruce.
Wow! I totally see it.
check out his latest CD - Unreleased and Rareties
This is the definitive version of this song.
Tonight tonight the strips just right, out of our way mister you best keep...
RIP
Ya think Bruce could do "Harlem River Blues?"
Love everything but the exit sign

Uh. Ohhhhhkay...backing away slowly from the insane person.

Sorry you don't get it.
It was fucking beautiful. If you found it droney and emotionless it’s because you’re tone deaf and alexithymic.
joe jitsu yah Andy Riley cuz Bruce is a pitch perfect trubador .. it's raw like Jerzee
Sorry, i don' t like this cover neither
and we care?
