To me the Boxypixel Plate and Glass are the way to go. The speaker and other components can be acquired cheaper elsewhere but springing for that cosmetic is so worth
Nice video, I've been wanting to make one of these as well! Waiting for restock. You know what would be a cool video is if you could try your hand at making a DIY Gameboy color flash cart. Really test your soldering skills and it isn't too expensive to do. I'd love to see a video.
That sounds like a lot of fun! Do you have any links to any guides or hardware for a project like that? I'd love to get my hands dirty on that kind of a project.
@@TheBrokenPast yeah! These are the parts I found when I was curious about this stuff! github.com/JRodrigoTech/FLASH-ROM-Adapter-for-GameBoy/blob/master/README.md
Looks great and the speaker situation is much better. If someone makes an LCD upgrade in the future, this could be the definitive way to play GBA games.
Is anyone considering making aluminum replacement shells for the DS lite proper? Seems like a really good way to refurbish these as the plastics age since the plastic replacements kinda stink.
I have a DSL where the 'adjustment' screw broke and fell out. Which means it needs an entire new boards to properly use the top screen because it 'flickers' uncontrollably. Bottom still works fine though so I plan to use the broken board to make a Macro. Don't feel bad about not wanting to take the extra effort to restore a DSL with known issues. The only thing I think I'd say is someone mounted the speaker on that side and meshed the stylus hole to make it the sound output, was pretty neat. I also nearly had a heart attack...DO YOU NOT HAVE A MAGNIFYING INSTRUMENT FOR SOLDERING?!?!?
The idea of a mesh sound direction out the stylus slot sounds like a great idea! And no, no need for a magnifying glass. Just squint really hard :). I also do some gunpla building, and miniature painting on the side, so I'm used to trying to focus on something that small. :)
I haven't seen a single GBA Macro shell where the Slot 2 port is extended so that cartridges don't awkwardly stick out. Is there a functional reason for this?
I could probably do some more digging, but my initial findings just find the ez flash 3 in 1 cartridge in that smaller form factor, and that needs to be written by slot 1 any time you want to play a different game. Am I missing a different cart?
@@TheBrokenPast I do not discredit the aluminum. Its realy seems like ahigh end product. I just with that form and style was available in a material cheaper to produce and would match the rear shell a bit more.
@@eddiejeffrys1985 Its the other way around, the injection molding would be waaaaay more expensive. Injection molding requires a factory, molds, etc. Injection molding is great if you are going to sell millions of units of something (so the amount needed to recoup the costs per unit is really low) but this is a extremely niche product, it would be at least 10 times more expensive than this. People think because the material itself is cheap, that makes it cheap to produce but plastic requires molds, those molds have to be created by an engineer, it also requires a full blown factory with employees, training, safety, chain of supply, etc. The total cost of all of this is in the millions of dollars for something that will sell a few thousand units, if you are lucky. This in the other hand, its made in a little shop by an automatic milling machine, you put in a piece of aluminum, press a button on a computer and a few minutes later you get the finished part.

Yea, as a collector I am trying to get started working on stuff like this myself. I bought a little soldering kit and I have a dmg game boy (the original one) that has lines in the screen (dead pixels) and I definitely think something like that will be a good starting point.
You can certainly add it on later if you'd like. Just keep in mind that if you do it later, there will have been time for dust to settle onto the screen itself. You'll need to make sure you get it all cleaned out before you seal it in there with a lens cover!
I have the kit, but have not gotten around to build it yet. I hate the face plate I got. I wanted that blue color one like yours, but they sent me the baby blue one (turquoise) I think thats what its called. I might just wait and see if boxy pixel make the blue one again and buy that one instead.
I wonder if it would be possible to use one of those high quality, high brightness aftermarket GBA screens to a GBA macro mod like this. Great video! Thanks! 👍
That’s a great question. I would suspect that one of the aftermarket GBA screens wouldn’t work on a DS lite. But, maybe there’s someone who has developed an adapter to make it work? I haven’t heard of anything, but would love to give it a go if there was such a thing!
All you have to do is a simple mod. Cut the shell of a gba so you have only the screen portion. Then cut the shell of a ds so you have the side with the d-pad and the a,b,x, and y buttons. Super glue it all together and BAM! you can now play gameboy advance games on a ds lite through the glass of a quality gba screen cover 👌
The paint job on your first one was looking rough. I think it could look a lot better with some wet sanding and buffing. Thank you for the video, I really like how your new one turned out

I think I agree with you. On one hand, I like the feel and heft of this much better than the GBA. However, the GBA with an IPS v2 looks so much better and is much brighter. So, it's a bit of a toss up for me as to which one I prefer.
