  • Epic Games finally announced their Unreal Engine price change to seat-based enterprise software pricing model for industries other than game development. To fund future development efforts, Epic Games will be rolling out this new non-game pricing model with Unreal Engine 5.4 in late April.

    Not gonna lie, I consider myself biased towards Epic Games, as Unreal Engine being free helped me to step up into the new industry field, land a decent job and made my life more stable. I am happy that they are introducing this pricing model to keep unreal engine free for us to learn and grow. So I find absolutely no cons that Epic Games wants to get more funds for developing their engine and keeping it free. Share your thoughts

      The company that I work at uses UE (through me) as a part of the process, but not as their core business. What bugs me, is that you can get both TW or RC separately, but not UE. My company is not gonna pay 1850 per year for three softwares, two of which we don't need, especially for products that are optional. Luckily, were not being forced to update, otherwise I would most likely lose my job.

      but imagine the budget cuts that companies would probably have to make due to its new pricing model.. wouldn't be surprised if companies laid people off because of it.

    This new pricing update sounds really fair for everyone involved, from the hobbist and freelancer who's just starting out in the business and will still use it free at the same time they make some money, to the big companies with expensive projects that will pay for only a fraction of what they'll be able to profit, helping funding UE a lot better and make it even greater.
    And tells us more on a video about your job with films and compositing, special effects and all that! Your references, education and learning path and all this. Would be awesome!

    What a great new isn't it?
    That's profitable for everyone who would like to professionalise themself with UE before jumping into the industry (automotive, archviz etc) imo
    Would be interested for a video where you talk about your background story btw (why, when, how)

    Amazing video! This cleared up a lot of questions I had as someone who is just about to start his journey with 3D and Unreal in particular. Thanks a lot of explaining so clearly! You earned a new subscriber:).
    Also kudos to Epic for being such a great company. This pricing system, unlike Unity’s system, is nothing but fair and realistic imo. Also from a marketing standpoint it is insanely clever what Epic is doing: by keeping it this accessible and basically free for all individuals it motivates lots of people to learn Unreal. I think what Epic is trying to achieve is that the gaming and film industry will notice the huge amount of people that can use Unreal and thus will adjust their workflow to Unreal. And of course if they do that, they have to pay Epic their fee. Brilliant marketing!

      thanks dude! I work entirely in Unreal Engine with a bit of blender and I was also worried when they announced it, but was pretty sure it will not affect individuals. So yea it is really cool that they still keep it free for learning!

    What is the definition of a 'game'? Are applications like the driving simulator or flight simulator included in the game category?

    • @postprocessed
      @postprocessed  2 месяца назад

      Basically anything what is packed to .exe from Unreal Engine and licensed (sold) to end user is considered a game. Product configurator, game, simulator. So any application which has price and surpasses 1 mln in sales is up to 5% royalty.

    • @postprocessed
      @postprocessed  2 месяца назад +1

      So look. Here is the thing. Do you sell it? I mean on Steam or for other users to use it?
      Or you give it to the company and they post in on their website?
      Do you make over 1mln? If you don't you don't need.
      Does your firm make over 1mln? If so - it is their obligation, not yours as employee or freelancer

    • @dt_render
      @dt_render 2 месяца назад

      I sell directly to the company and they post it on their website (via pixel streaming) and yes I make less than 1mln per Year.
      Thank you for the answers, it was kinda confusing.

      @@postprocessed Thank you for the answers. As I was reading your answer for the 2nd time, I became confused in the last part.
      The scenario is that I sell directly to an Architectural firm (for example). If they make over 1mln in sales they will have to pay 5%? How do you know if those sales were directly from the application?

    • @postprocessed
      @postprocessed  2 месяца назад +1

      @@dt_render it is not your concern in this case. If you do one time sale as you services - it doesn’t matter until you do over 1mln$
      You should understand what is your sale model. If you charge services for development of the product and sell it one time - and it is not reselling anymore, and you don’t do over 1mln$+ you don’t have to pay for a seat

    • @dt_render
      @dt_render 2 месяца назад

      @@postprocessed So if I understand correctly, in this scenario, since my customer is not reselling the application either, he too does not have to worry about the royalties.

    Epic could have been more aggressive here and still looked better than Unity. But they decided not to be.
    I just hope this will be enough to keep the UE model alive. It would be worse if they had to increase the price or change the rules.
    For now, this is great news.
    I take your point some companies might drop its use, but the price isn’t that crazy for a seat or 2.
