Given Campbell's success at Arsenal, it has largely been forgotten that he struggled at Arsenal initially. He had been used to hoofing the ball out of danger at Spurs. At Arsenal he was expected to win tackles and then keep possession. For the first three months, he often seemed to be caught between two minds. The turning point was his first visit back to Spurs in an Arsenal shirt. Despite the hostility, Campbell probably found an away derby at Spurs easier to handle from a technical point of view. Even Wenger would accept that at times the ball just needed clearing out of the penalty area. Campbell was outstanding and went on from strength to strength.

Excellent doc, you’ve outdone yourself. The tone and narrative arcs you build bolster one other making this feel like a seedy story of backroom machinations. The Game of Thrones of football. You have an instinctive way with words, and it's very fun and itches a superbly particular niche of my brain, at the intersection between my love for well-narrated documentaries, history, and football. That said, I would recommend pacing the videos slightly tighter. Not too much since it'll lose the specific flair of sounding like a fireside story on Christmas eve, but just enough that the flow isn't lost because of the time taken to move from topic to topic (this is more of something I observed on the Calciopoli video than here, but pointing it out regardless). Great video, as always, and thoroughly looking forward to more! :]
Thank you Ayon I’m really glad you enjoyed it. And I really am grateful for the feedback, I’m new to this whole video editing/storytelling thing so I really do need feedback from people to keep improving. Thanks again mate, all the best
Haven’t watched the whole video yet, but according to your last few I’m fairly confident it’s gonna be an interesting watch, keep up the great work. I have a suggestion for a future video, being saudi and after the takeover, I’d say a video on the highs and lows of Mike Ashleys era of Newcastle would be pretty interesting.
Wow, what a great football documentary channel! A very well made documentary. I have no doubts Spurs fans will never forget and forgive Campbell. However, as a Gooner supporter, I actually forgave Ashley Cole left us after what David Dein had said about his departure and admitted that it was David's fault, and not Cole's fault. Cole was more ambitious and cared about his own future. His moves to The Bridge was eventually paid off. It's always difficult to judge until the truth comes out.
Growing up Arsenal, I never paid close attention to the inner turmoil over at Spurs, so the backstory to Sol's decision is mostly new to me. I can only imagine how reporting to/negotiating with an arrogant and entitled buffoon like Alan Sugar would have grated on a sensitive young black superstar. Sugar's rants against "player power" hint at what an old-fashioned, hierarchical person he is: he saw himself as the boss and expected his employee Sol to come to heel and carry the water for Spurs when ordered. Years later he also put out horrible racist tweets that make you wonder what kind of attitudes he was privately showing young black millionaires in the 1990s. You can imagine how alluring it must've been to go and work for a progressive, patient, compassionate and fiercely loyal person like Arsene Wenger.
hey bro i love this video cos it explains more ab the transfer and bts and i was wondering could you do a documentary ab either a rise of a football club or a fall
Masterpiece Documentary,Suprising transfer of betrayal and shocking moment for spurs fans that time...arsenal and spurs relationship never be same again after that, even today..
I feel like Figo might have signed something that at the time might have felt like free money, since Florentino Perez was the underdog in that presidential race. On one hand, Sol Campbell's story felt like all his actions were more deliberate, on the other hand he had every right and reason to feel betrayed by the club. I can empathize if from there on, it was all business for him. One could argue that he could've easily justify going to Juventus. However, Arsenal offered more money and convenience. He was able to stay in London and not have to deal with a different language. I really enjoy how your videos add context a nuance to these remarkable stories.
Thank you Paulo I really appreciate that. I'm a big football geek and love the nuances and different perspectives on stories like this so I'm really glad you appreciated it. I think you're absolutely right, neither situation is black and white. I was saying to another viewer that ultimately, with the Campbell situation, both sides are right. He was doing what was in his best personal and professional interests but in doing so, he had to betray the Spurs fans. Thanks for your comment my friend, I really do appreciate it. All the best mate
@@DanRenoyasFootballStories That's a very eloquent and astute way of putting it. You bring up a very good point, the fans, which is what differentiates footballers from other non-team sports related professions. Bosses and higher ups often ask for commitment and ownership. However, when they don't reciprocate in the respect and commitment to the worker, they just tend to leave because the inspiration for that ownership is gone. Asking without inspiring is a sure way for companies to see their top talents leave them. However, fans add another layer of complexity that other professions don't have. The club asked him for commitment and ownership, but unfortunately did not manage to inspire any hope of winning titles. When he needed the club, they left him out to dry. The betrayal was exclusively to the fans, but I wonder if there was anything he could've done differently. Had he been more transparent, would that potentially hurt the possibility of making his ambitions become reality? Even it it didn't, was that his genuine concern?
I rarely subscribe and comment, but I decided to do so after watching all your videos which have an unrivaled professional quality to them. I only started watching football in the mid 2000s, so I always considered Sol Campbell an Arsenal legend and had no idea about the extent of his betrayal. In my opinion, it feels more personal than Figo's move just because he was a local boy. Moreover, his move was integral in helping Tottenham's arch rivals get back to winning ways while condemning them to continue writing "the history of the Tottenham" as Chiellini put it and without any compensation to boot. Being a sportsman is not like any other profession merely because thousands or even millions of fans are invested in your choices. Instead of being praised for getting a bump in salary at a better corporation, you are labelled a mercenary or worse. Ultimately, one could argue that moves which completely burn bridges are ill-advised in any profession, especially in one as emotionally charged as football and when equivalent and less divisive decisions could be made. Given your interest in covering contentious incidents, I was wondering if you ever considered Roberto Baggio as the subject of one of your videos? I am sure you can find many different talking points over his illustrious career (injury prior to signing, being nursed back then forcefully sold to a rival, being underutilised by managers at top clubs and the national team while finding success at smaller teams, etc.). Keep up the good work, and I will be looking forward to your next upload.
Thank you Adrian I really appreciate that mate. Thank you so much. I agree with everything you've said. Initially I thought that Figo's was the worse given the non-football context that surrounds Barca and Madrid. That's a great point about how Campbell joining Arsenal took them to the next level. You're right, football is a world unlike any other in terms of the adulation given to players. Loyalty is important for me, I really don't like when players tarnish their legacies by joining bitter rivals. I felt the same when fernando Torres left Liverpool for Chelsea. But on the other hand, a footballer's career is short and the game is full of players who stayed loyal but had precious little to show for it at the end of their careers. I love Roberto Baggio - I'll happily do a video on him. Thanks again for commenting and subscribing mate, all the best
There is a tendency for fans to almost dehumanise football players. Top players are expected to stay at struggling clubs and forego the chance of winning titles while also taking a financial hit that only benefits the extremely wealthy owners. At the same time, struggling players are quickly labelled as flops with fans calling for them to be shipped off at the nearest opportunity. We tend to forget that these athletes are just young men who usually come from underprivileged backgrounds. They have to adapt to new countries and cultures at times all while having their actions and performances scrutinised in the public eye. Sure they are well compensated when compared to the average Joe, but Joe's mistakes at work are not immortalised and dissected while affecting the mood of fans across the world. In the case of Sol Campbell, it is easy for the fans to ask him to uproot his life and move to Spain or Italy, but perhaps he simply preferred the comfort of being in North London where a sportingly and financially competitive team was present. However, Tottenham fans have every right to be upset. I am not too familiar with the non-footballing aspect of the rivalry between Barca and Real Madrid, but I previously watched a video briefly mentioning politics coming into play in the contentious transfer of Di Stefano which completely changed the fortunes of Madrid and was perhaps the most impactful in its history. I have no idea how long putting these videos together takes and I would imagine it becomes even more time consuming when covering topics from the 50s, but the whole Colombian money league and the debacle surrounding Di Stefano's transfer could be interesting to look into. I am rooting for your channel to become one of the biggest in the football RUclips space.

I always thought Luis Figo leaving Barcelona for Real Madrid was the biggest betrayal, now after watching this video I'm convinced otherwise, Sol Campbell's departure to Arsenal was the greatest betrayal in the history of football. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work 👏👏
Thanks mate I really appreciate that. I can’t make up my mind who’s worse. The political history between Barcelona and Real is really deep and Barca fans felt Figo betrayed a culture, which I think is fair. On the other hand he’s not Catalan so it’s a question of whether the history was his burden to carry. The history between Spurs and Arsenal is mainly football with culture and social issues a smaller part of it. But Campbell was a Spurs fan and was developed by the club. There are so many ways of looking at both situations it’s hard to come to a definitive conclusion. But that’s what we love about the game! Thanks for watching mate, all the best
Ashley Cole's seedy meetings with Kenyon at Chelsea, we're a bit naughty, when he was still at Arsenal. Opposing fans were already chanting 'Chelsea rentboy' at him, months before he left Arsenal for the Bridge... 😂
Why’s everyone blaming Campbell and not the Spurs Hierarchy?? Based on this story they undervalued him behind closed doors and He wanted to hurt them for that out of spite and he did😂
Sol Campbell left Tottingham for the same reason Kane recently left, when a player retires he wants to see some silverware on his mantlepiece. Yes, it was a bitter pill for the spurs fans that he chose Arsenal but he's a professional player, not a football fan.
Sol Campbell's betrayal isn’t just one of the worst in football history-it’s an all-time low. But Arsenal’s desperation in snatching up a player so quick to stab his club in the back shows just how lacking in class they really are. Campbell won’t be remembered as a legend, just a sellout chasing cheap glory, while Arsenal’s willingness to embrace him only highlights their own pitiful standards. In the end, both Campbell and Arsenal come out looking pathetic. It’s ironic, really-Arsenal’s history is littered with players jumping ship for "glory" the moment they get a chance, from Nasri to Van Persie. Classless and cheap, just like the club itself. But then again, what more can you expect from a team that abandoned its roots in South London? Loyalty and integrity were never part of their DNA, so none of this should come as a surprise.
This is an object lesson in 'keeping ones own counsel' and NEVER making promises except to oneself. Had Sol joined Juventus; a club he'd a suited down to the ground all would have been well.
Excellent video. I had not realised how significant were the legal cases involving Campbell and Sugar. Sugar's motivation in buying Tottenham however was not that mentioned. Sugar may have loosely supported Tottenham all his life. However, he was not a fanatical fan. When he bought Spurs, someone at the club mentioned 'The Double' (that Spurs had won in 1961) and Sugar asked 'What Double?' Sugar's real motivation was that his key business at the time was satellite dishes and the sale of these were linked to Sky buying the rights to televise the Premier League. Buying Spurs gave Sugar a seat at the table where these negotiations were being made. David Dein suggested that Sugar should recuse himself on the ground that he had a vested interest.
Thanks mate. I didn't realise that about Sugar. I found a documentary where he was asked what his reasons were for buying the club and he said it was sense of community and a lifelong ambition. Just goes to show you shouldn't take people's words at face value. Thanks for watching and commenting mate, all the best
Sold gave Spurs 10 years. He was grossly underpaid, thus it was a one way loyalty. Sol saw the light and decided he had to put himself first for a change and did so. Good for him. Great player.

Even so, my style is quite similar to yours and seeing your content fills me with joy. Excellent video! Sol's betrayal was far more personal because it was HIS decision ultimately. Figo was bound by them hitting the release clause, so he could only go there. He planned to go and hopefully come back. It was a snap decision out of the blue made by a forced trigger of a release clause. Sol's decision was sat in a network of years of planning. Moving to Arsenal wasnt, but leaving the club was. Even after running down his contract, which personally is the much bigger betrayal if you care about a club - not saying he should care about them but if you dont, dont say it on TV - Arsenal were one of many great suitors he could have joined. Manchester United was another. All the other people you talked about. Campbells betrayal was planned to some extent. Figo's was not. That's my difference. Neither made the "wrong" move, but both are a reason that players speak through PR reps now.
Never stop making football documentaries these are amazing. The way you speak about the beautiful game is so poetic. A channel for true fans

You narrated perfectly, complimented nicely with your choice of sound track! Keep up the great work!
I have shared !
Excellent doc, you’ve outdone yourself. The tone and narrative arcs you build bolster one other making this feel like a seedy story of backroom machinations. The Game of Thrones of football.
The way you framed it all, I almost think Sol went to Arsenal out of spite for how he felt Spurs had let him down, but who knows. As an Arsenal supporter I’m glad we got him tho 😅🤷🏾♂️

Another excellent piece 👏👏👏 Warra channel 🔥
You have an instinctive way with words, and it's very fun and itches a superbly particular niche of my brain, at the intersection between my love for well-narrated documentaries, history, and football. That said, I would recommend pacing the videos slightly tighter. Not too much since it'll lose the specific flair of sounding like a fireside story on Christmas eve, but just enough that the flow isn't lost because of the time taken to move from topic to topic (this is more of something I observed on the Calciopoli video than here, but pointing it out regardless). Great video, as always, and thoroughly looking forward to more! :]

It's always difficult to judge until the truth comes out.
omg u should make a podcast and post these audios. these vids are so good

The introduction had me 💯🔥✨
Thanks Marley. Really glad you enjoyed it mate and thanks for leaving a comment. All the best mate
A very well crafted documentary.

A good documentary.

As a rangers fan I never wanted mo Johnstone, I still wish we kept our tradition. But when we changed things, at least it managed to get right under the skin of celtic fans. Softened the blow a bit
I have a mate who’s a Rangers fan who said exactly the same thing. I’m definitely gonna keep searching for good footage and if I can get enough I’ll definitely do it because it’s fascinating from both sides
He never recaptured his form from his spell at Celtic, though, did he, when he returned from France? But, yes, he was a disgrace for that betrayal.

Yeah that’s fair enough Chris I don’t disagree. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, all the best
That's a good point mate they will usually come back and bite you at some point. Thanks for commenting mate, all the best
Rip Campbell I came to know you through pes you will always be an arsenal legend
Sold gave Spurs 10 years. He was grossly underpaid, thus it was a one way loyalty.
Sol saw the light and decided he had to put himself first for a change and did so. Good for him. Great player.

I really enjoy your content. I make content about football too, although in my case it's mostly focused on Independiente Santa Fe, a football team of Bogota, Colombia. Even so, my style is quite similar to yours and seeing your content fills me with joy. Talking about football of the past is harder each day due to the sheer amount of different stories and the organizations making them, the introduction of Cristiano and Messi into football makes talking about anyone other than them something very difficult.

Absolutely correct mate I couldn't have put it better myself. Thanks for leaving a comment man, all the best
