Sébastien Ogier was the pride of the plains on Friday at Safari Rally Kenya as he recovered from a minor morning setback to build a commanding overnight lead.
The Frenchman showed his rivals a clean pair of heels on the opening day of action and had established a double-digit lead just three special stages into this seventh round of the FIA World Rally Championship.
Leading positions after Friday:

Gutted for Tanak, he looked to be so quick and a potential winner before the trouble with the tire and engine. Hopefully tomorrow will be kinder to him.

I want to hate on Seb but the dudes a beast and very tactical. Makes it look effortless. Tanak and that M sport are nowhere near the toyotas or the Hyundais and he is driving the wheels off that thing

What happened to katsuta? Front fenders smashed off, rear left fander gone, bonnet bent like hell, no rear wing. Something happened to him on the last stage of the afternoon i think thst caused this
He hit a tree branch at one point on the final stage

Because they have to be road legal as they also get on normal roads at times mostly when transferring.

Absolute noob question: I am not familiar other than an arm's length to anything rally...does the weight of a single spare tire really make that much of a difference?
As long your vehicle runs on earth and mobilize due to ground friction and traction; it does.
