    When I was 14 I met cliff for about ten minutes at the Marriott hotel in salt lake city Utah on the puppets tour, he signed my magazine and was just a hell of a nice guy. They blew Ozzy off the stage that night. A great bass player, a great writer and a great human being.

    Kind of haunting that the interviewer asks him about the future, that the future is just a question mark that you shouldn't worry about. Strange that he died six days later. You can really tell the guy had no fear of failure or of death or anything, just confident in his self his band his music. That's pretty admirable

    Cliff sounded so well-spoken.From all the bits and pieces of info I've gotten about the band,Burton read books from writers like H.P.Lovecraft and perhaps from his reading was able to be a fairly articulate guy.Sad that he was gone just under a week after this interview.

    • @Lotus-Son
      @Lotus-Son 10 лет назад +12

      I completely agree. Seeing as how all these guys seemed to have grown into being able to form more articulate talk in future interviews into their adulthood, you can already see that Cliff was able to formulate very solid talks in his interviews at an early point from his peers.
      He still has the sort of stoner/surf-like vibe cadence when he talks (well, they all did for that matter) but despite that he seemed like a pretty cool and talkative guy. I mean the interview was a good 12 minutes for a relatively small journalist with OKAY questions so that's indicative of a pretty well-spoken guy.
      Lars and Scott Ian had early signs of being pretty articulate too. Such a shame to not be able to see how Cliff would've grown up. Though I have respect for Jason and I do like Robert more for his personality than how he should fit in the band, Cliff really was the true fourth member of the band.
      It's all speculation but I truly believe he would've kept the band in check and would've been another heavy legend that frequents the metal scene today and would've been a great guy to hear from.

    Man, Cliff dying played a huge part in Metallica. I think if Cliff was still alive, they would have a different scenario and a similar type of way how their career really went. I don't believe this fake fairy tale of Metallica doing thrash metal for the next 30 years. If that happened, Cliff would had easily left the band. I think their career would had went into a similar way of how it really did. I mean if Cliff was still alive, would Metallica And justice for all be their best album? Would The Black album would had been released and become a mega massive stardom success that it had? Would they hire Bob rock? I mean Cliff seems to be a person that like to work his own way and maybe they wouldn't hire Bob rock because of Cliff not working with him or maybe they would had, who knows. I still think Load-reload would had been released but how would it sound like? Cliff in his last interview in September 26, 1986, he said he wanted his band to have a softer approach and to make soft music one day in the future but there is no time for that now, that pretty much means that Metallica in their next record with Cliff after Master Of Puppets would still would had been Thrash Metal. Would Lars had sued Napster or would Cliff get him out of it? I think they still would had made a S&M because Cliff was so into classical music but what kind of S&M? Would Metallica make a video for One? Would they had made St Anger or would Cliff would had left by that point? I don't think Cliff would had enjoy St Anger but that just me. Would Cliff get a solo career and removed himself from metal music? So many questions that we may never know. I'll tell you this though. To everybody who thinks that And Justice for all was about to be that soft record, you are 100% wrong. And Justice for all would had been released earlier than it did, like in 1987 and not only just that, but Metallica was about to take the some of the complex and progressive elements in Master of puppets and make it as a full complex progressive thrash metal record with And justice for all. And justice for all probably would had been called their best work since Metallica by that time were more older and more matured. It would be interesting to see how great and amazing And Justice For All would had been with Cliff but the fucking bus driver had to ruined everything and made Cliff dead. Hey, be thankful that Cliff recorded three albums with them, look at Kill Em All to Ride The lighting and to Master Of Puppets. All matured from one another and I think that would had 100% continue on for the next record. Man, if only Cliff was still alive. If only. Cliff Burton, Rest in peace.

      The anger and sadness of Cliffs death is what really shaped the sound of AJFA, I would think To live is to die would most likely still happen but be a bit different, One would be there as they played around with the idea of song while making Puppets, I also believe that S&M would have still happened as Cliff was a huge fan of classical music, also very Metallica album would have an instrumental

    It's hard to say where Metallica would be if Cliff was still here. I do know that Cliff was extremely passionate about music and staying real. Him being alive still throughout all of these years would have most definitely steered Metallica in the way that we have always known Metallica! Cliff was the band member who seemed to advocate street style the most. He drove Metallica. Metallica would still be shocking the world if only Cliff was here to bless us with his godly talent and expertise in musicianship🙏 We love you, man.

      Lol. I never understand why people try to argue things that can be easily checked. All you have to do is check each Metallica album and it shows what guy wrote what song. Every song Metallica ever wrote has James's name on it.

    • @scipio123
      @scipio123 4 года назад +1

      @@Salomon_G I agree, but I think it's important to remember the influence that Cliff had on James in those early days. Cliff was considered to have had the most eclectic and "sophisticated" musical taste in the band, and James really respected and responded to that in his songwriting...one gets the sense through interviews that James was writing with Cliff's tastes and expectations in mind (at least more so than Kirk or Lars). I just can't imagine James writing some of his hokier material from the 90s with Cliff still around. They might not have continued doing thrash but I honestly can't imagine them doing stuff like Fuel (no disrespect to that song I know a lot of people like it). But who's to say...sad that we never got to find out! Fuckin mortality!
      Oh also - yeah, I agree, enough with Mustaine. People exaggerate his influence on the band to an insane degree.

      I believe they never would have worked with someone like Bob Rock had Cliff lived... He was way too independent-minded to ever put up with someone like Bob Rock telling him what to do and how to play a song. And had they still worked with Bob, then Cliff would have certainly been a loud voice in making sure the band didn't make too many compromises. For sure Load and Reload would never have come out the way they did.

That is NOT a slam on Jason Newsted btw because I Think Jason is an amazing musician and skill level of playing is probably right there w Cliff, However Cliff had something from the other 3 guys that unfortunately Jason didn't quite have, and that is admiration and respect. Not only was Cliff a super close friend like a brother, but he was the driving force of creativity in Metallica, and also taught the other 3 a lot of what they still use today in songwriting

    Man Cliff was such a gift to the world of music, and I have often wondered where Metallica's music would have gone if he had not died. Would And Justice have sounded the way it did, would the Black album have been the juggernaut as it turned out, would they still have switched their sound in the mid 90s, and would Cliff have produced any solo work.
    It's hard to imagine that this interview was less than a week before that fatal bus crash. RIP Major Rager! Your legacy lives on brother! \m/\m/

      Justice would have been even more a masterpiece than it was, and we would have heard bass on it ;) Cliff was the kind of musician who would ultimately have outgrown Lars, and he might have come to a decision point of whether to push for Lars to be replaced, or split from the band and get into something more in line with his musical style and interests.

James Hetfield misses him the most (not that Lars Ulrich or Kirk Hammett don't) and I can see why James did look up to his what I believe an older brother. RIP Cliff. I named my first born after you. Though given how few interviews he did, its somewhat unfortunate that he did one here with someone who seems to have trouble (and not only for language reasons) stringing a coherent sentence together. Despite that, pretty good content in this one. Cliff always sounds like an old soul - like a wise old man.

The interviewer is probably French who was living in the UK. On a side note, John Marshall (Metal Church) was playing Rhythm guitar that night, as James couldn't. This was also the very last gig that Cliff played in the UK.

    It's weird for someone like me to read the comments about how we all wish Cliff was still alive. The thing that should not be sucks but is nonetheless part of life. The fact we are all commenting on this only proves to me my belief that although physically departed,Cliff truly lives on in our thoughts, comments,what we think day-to-day.I see a misfits shirt and I think of Cliffs tat. Proof that that part of him/me/MetallicA/us,making comments lives. We all are connected in some way or another to make life. Memories are all you get,and no one gets out alive.So cherish if you were so lucky to have known a musician in our time who's compositions are copied by the classical greats. Cliff lives....🤘

    So much of his Old Soul is captured here. So much intellect. I would’ve loved to talk to Cliff on so many things. Such a unique perspective especially on Human Nature. Love his thoughts on being an individual and not following the crowd.
    Such a shame he went to the next life when he did. Wish he was still here. One of my favorite bassists. He was an Aquarius too and he shows us Aquariuses in such a lovely light

    Cliff died on 9/27/86, so if this date is correct, the interview is about a week out from that terrible event. This interview would be in London the same day as the show at the Hammersmith Odeon. This is probably before the show. Of note, the interviewer sounds Swedish. Obviously, she is not a native English speaker. This makes sense, as the very next leg of the tour would take them to Sweden, where Cliff was killed in the bus accident. So, she is probably getting interviews for print upon their arrival. Also touching is the fact Cliff mentions the Asian leg of the Tour, which Jason Newsted would complete just 6 weeks later, after two American shows in California. RIP Cliff. Thanks for sharing!

    One was day on the green, but my sister’s boyfriend at the time bailed on us and went without us.
    The second was with Ozzy, but because I had a school field trip to Magic Mountain the following day, she wouldn’t let me go.

    I don't know what Cliff is talking about. Donington festival England was the biggest metal festival in the whole of the U.K. it's hardly 'small' it's huge...

    • @Mysterywhiteboy78
      @Mysterywhiteboy78 4 года назад

      @Noah Deamer Weird statement , I'm not offended at all. It's just incorrect / inaccurate - Donington was the biggest metal festival in the U.K for years, Metallica are obsessed with British bands especially Ulrich who was always talking about the NWOBHM, he never seems to stop talking about it ,he's not even American for a start. Just the other day I saw Hetfield worshipping Black Sabbath on the verge of tears on stage telling them sat in the audience how much they meant to him and how much they influenced him....

    • @Mysterywhiteboy78
      @Mysterywhiteboy78 4 года назад

      @Noah Deamer Irrelevant ,nobody cares , bigger, better, harder, faster etc. Back to the point Metallica are heavily influenced by British bands.

    • @Mysterywhiteboy78
      @Mysterywhiteboy78 4 года назад

      @Noah Deamer That's not entirely correct is it? Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy , Saxon, Scorpions, Europe, Malmsteen, Def Leppard, Motorhead to name a few were all big metal/rock acts in the 80s.

    Thank you for sharing this piece of Cliff with the rest of us! I have ALWAYS, believed that Cliff, was the source of the magic of the first 3 albums! His sense of melody and harmonies were what made Metallica the mighty force they are today! To prove it was Cliff, just listen to everything they wrote without him (AJFA I leave out because I think Cliff wrote a lot more of that album than he was given credit for) they never ever sounded even close to the three first bodies of work, thus proving that Cliff was the missing ingredient that made their magical sound and why they never found that sound without him. Lars stepped in but he couldn't fill Cliff's shoes. I love Metallica, I love almost everything they have done (NOT including ST. Anger as it was the worst record they ever made)! I will remain a purist, the first 3 albums will always be the true Metallica sound, MoP is arguably the greatest Thrash record ever made! R.I.P Cliff Burton, the major rager on the 4 string mother fucker!!!!

    This interview should open the eyes of all the Jason Newsted fanboys. Listen to how involved Cliff Burton was in Metallica, and because of his music knowledge he was a cornerstone figure. He died and then another came in and reaped what they didn't deserve. And that's why James, Lars, and Kirk had a hard time accepting Jason Newsted for all those years. So, unless you've been in that unique position of success, depression, and grief then you can't say anything about James, Lars, and Kirk. If you must blame someone blame management for not slowing down the Metallica train and getting the boys the emotional help they needed.
    But now Metallica can finally play their entire song catalog, and that was something they couldn't do with Jason Newsted in the band. So, it all worked out in the end. Jason made Cliff's squillions of dollars, as Jason would say, and Metallica is back to being musically complete band.

    • @TheMotownPhilly

      LSweet2007 what the hell are you talking about they couldn't play their entire catalogue. If thats a comment on Jasons playing ability then your way off base. Jason is a world class bass player and can play note for note with Cliff. Cliff was a great bass player and really creative but so is Jason.
