Okay, the short version. Measure the height of your mattress and add the amount you want to be tucked under the mattress. Cut that amount out of the four corners in a square. Sew the cut edges of each corner together. Now you should have a sheet that should resemble a fitted sheet. There is no reason to put elastic all around the sheet or put it in the casing. Just zig zag the elastic around the top and bottom of the sheet. You don’t have to do the sides other than some around the corner, about a foot. I would use wider elastic so it stays put better. Using this formula you can make sheets for anything. Baby cribs, toddler beds, cradles, changing tables. I have done it all. Length, width of mattress, add height and what you want to tuck under. Take the height and tuck under measurements and cut a square out of each corner and sew as directed. No need to get fancy as long as the edge is finished. No one is going to lift up your mattress to check it out.
SOUNDS easy enough but for people like me, I learn with see/hear/do. If you have a video, this one is just easier for me. I just want to convert my flat sheets when I change my sheets out and so they match because I’m too lazy to go but coordinating solid colors with my sets. Lol.
My daughter has 5 children and also babysits 3 more, she uses fitted sheets to put on her table at mealtime so there is no worries about messing up her table. She also does crafts, painting, play dough projects with them with the sheet still on there. So I took the flat sheets (that matched her kids sheet sets) home with me and made her more table covers and she was thrilled with them.
Thanks for these instructions. I was confused until I figured out that you fold it side to side and then top to bottom. My King size sheet was not long enough to sew 15 inches but I just cut out a 12 inch square and it worked fine. Be careful you sew them all the same way. I had one corner sewed inside out. Oh well, it is still awesome to have a new sheet and since I have lots of top sheets I intent to make more. My husband was impressed. Easy peasy!
For those complaining about measurements, when you buy a SET of bedsheets, it always comes with a flat sheet, a fitted sheet and pillowcases. She used the FLAT sheet and added elastics to make it "fitted". Buy a set that fits YOUR bed and add elastics to make it fitted. All she did was cut a square out of the 4 corners of the sheet and sew the raw edges together, then she added elastic. The elastic gets pulled as you sew to create the gathers and maintain elasticity. If you don't pull, it won't become fitted...
@@tofusucker the gather would be as long as you if needed. Some high-end sheets have elastic all the way around the sheet. It's not as tight along the sides as it would be at the corners. You could choose to use the same length on one side, as the length that was cut out of one side.
Excellent video. I have a stack of flat sheets in my linen closet because the fitted sheets in the set always wear out first. What a great way to be practical and save money! Thank you! 😀
I found this clear and easy to understand. Perhaps it could have had a diagram to make it clearer for absolute beginners and those who have complained in the comments section that they had trouble following it, but, as far as I'm concerned, it was a good tutorial. Thanks!
A diagram would be great since i have to learn to sew on a machine and I need to do this because I have a set that I love and no fitted sheet, just 2 flat sheets. Long story. I will watch the vid about how to do it by hand but I still have to make sure I am understanding before I cut.
Excellent video! Bottom sheets wear out faster than flat top sheets which are usually in good shape at second-hand stores, this is an economical way to covert them into fitted sheets.
I have seen other tutorials, but this is the best of all of them: very easy, simple and the results just amazing. Thank you!!👏👏 PS:. Just slow down. I had to pause several times to follow de instructions🥺
Thank you so much for this. I have been looking for a video like that for a long time now and I finally got it. Really appreciate it... love from Trinidad and Tobago...👍👌
Thanks for the video and the instructions. It is what I was looking for.I have a 40 inch mattress and more double flat bed sheets. At my age I had to replay the video two times. thanks again.
The flat sheets in the sets i buy aren't long enough to cover all 4 sides of my mattress. I'll have to add a strip of fabric to one end. Also, since the sheet will be pulled on and off many times, it could be a good idea to finish those corner seams, by zigzagging or turning under the seam allowance and topstitching.
Clever. What is the length of the elastics? There are four pieces of elastics? Sew them on the four corners? When sewing the elastics, one needs to pull to elongate the elastics?
I will be making a protective cover out of a shower liner for a cushion that I have on a window seat (where my puppy sleeps). So, I need a little help with measurements, since shower liner is just one big piece of fabric 70"x70". I trust the starting measurements would be the top and sides of cushion, then cut out corners as you suggested. Is that correct? Thank you.
I have done a similar thing but without cutting the fabric, just folding it and sewing it down. Actually I converted a king fitted into a queen fitted- I could never find a queen that fit amply, they were always too snug. So I converted a king into a queen.
Could u help me to understand a part in the video? I didnt get the parts when she sd to measure half of the width and length to cut out the square...im looking at it and visually im not seeing how she got the halves when the measurements seemed to be focused more on the corners.
I had to make an odd shaped sheet for a boat mattress out of a duvet cover, and this was very helpful. The hardest part for me was un-picking the stitches in the cover. I attached the elastic using my serger but basically worked out the same way. Thanks for your video.
My mom did this when she came to my home.... this is really good method for bed sheets. Why you not posting now sewing clothes videos.i seek sewing from you.
The ONLY reason I watched this is to fix my top sheet , meaning, I'm tired of my hubby pulling out what I keep tucking in so it doesn't gather up around my neck by morning time! But it does anyway so, I'm gonna fix his little red wagon since a sewing machine just landed in my lap and I was looking for a project anyways. So yeah, this battle is over, mua-ha-ha-ha! 😈
Thank you for sharing your method. P.S. Measuring half of the width and length starting from the center of each side and not from the corner. This makes the fitted sheet fit the mattress. I was a little confused at first.
Yes! My mother fitted the top sheets for our top bunk bed. Was so much easier to make with 2 "fitted" corners on the "foot end" of the top sheet . She was too short to reach across the bed & tuck the top sheet under the mattress, but with fitted corners she could just hook it onto the mattress & pull it up neatly.
TONS OF VANARCHY It fit perfectly! Those mattresses are impossible to find sheets for so this was awesome. We’ll be using the camper this weekend so we’ll see how well it stays put. :) I bet it’ll be great for your van as well.
Debi B....i got mine cut out but only had time to use safety pins. We had a two week vacation in the bc rockies. I found they were too tight on my diy custom cushions so i took them off one to see if it would help. I used a microsuede couch cover i had. Not sure what to do now. I have pictures in instagram in this name showing the progress. :)
When you say fold in half again, I can't tell if you want it in half lengthwise or in half top to bottom after watching that part twice. To mea, top to bottom makes sense. Is that correct?
it looks like once each way. so the very center of the sheet is at that point and your four corners of the sheet (when laying flat) are all together, diagonally from it.
Alice Crawford 1 second ago OK, thanks but I get that way. Now can you explain, if you can, how to get that sheet to go under that mattress by about 10/12 inches. While in a hospital in Germany, their sheet went about 10" under the mattress, they were always nice and taut. I've figures and made a couple of samples but I'm only able to get that mitered corner but not how to go from there. Any thoughts? Boxing out the corners allows for the sides to be covered but that doesn't allow for any fabric to go under the mattress. Hopefully you're better at figuring this out than me. A note: lol, this will drive you nuts like it has me. I've wasted a perfectly good Saturday afternoon working on this but still haven't figured it out.
I want about 10-12" of sheet under the mattress too. I think I'll measure a fitted sheet I have (that fits the most taut with 10" that goes underneath) and use that as a template /pattern for converting a flat sheet to a fitted sheet. If there isn't material underneath it won't fit taut. Fitted sheets that don't fit tight/taut are horrible;) I'll have to practice sewing the mitered corner on some square scrap pieces by sewing 2 seams, one that goes down the side corner and then continues on at a different angle to go underneath. Wish me luck;)
I believe that you would add 11 inches for each side beyond the width of the mattress. Do the same for top and bottom of the sheet Next, you elastic would, perhaps go all the way around the edge of the fabric. Perhaps not as tightly pulled beyond the "corners" as the in-between spaces. Good luck I hope that you find this helpful. A sewer from Michigan, USA
do the same as the video, but just do 2 corners not 4 , so the when you make the bed the bottom sheet is tucked under on all 4 corners with elsatic , and the top sheet is tucked in the same way but with elastic on the bottom corners so it doesn't pull out while you sleep
In my opinion. No.... you want the elastic to gather around the corner. The further past the corner, the more secure fit. My opinion. I'm not the author of the video.
@@8ntfrogn Thank you for that tip. I never knew. I'm no beginner, but that was a little too fast for me too. The playback speed of .75 was a little too draggy, but .5 was more normal.
