  • Amanda shows you the technique for spinning on an African bead whorl spindle. This is a support spindle, and rests in a little bowl on your lap.
If you are looking to purchase this type of spindle, why not visit Amanda's Etsy shop?

She usually has a few available for sale.

Fantastic! I've been searching all day for someone to show me how to spin on a supported spindle. Thanks for giving such clear instruction!

Oh my gosh, you are so smooth and calm when you work. What a pleasure to watch you! I'm still all frowny concentration when I spin. My teachers always cringe and say, "well, you still have to spin your twisted mile." LOL!

Thanks for the demonstration, especially going over the correct angle at which to spin. Awesome!

Many thanks for taking the time to make such a fantastic tutorial. I've just managed to make my own supported spindle using Fimo for the whorl and a length of dowel. But it'll take me a while to get anywhere near your standard - you make it look so easy and effortless!

Pleased you found it helpful! I've not actually measured a skein from this spindle. When I'm spindling I will fill the spindle wind off on to a cardboard tube on a ball winder, fill the spindle again, then join the yarn to the end from the ball winder and wind off to empty the spindle, I do that two or three times before plying. So if I did measure a skein it would contain several spindlefulls of yarn. At a rough guess if you are spinning fine, maybe 1-200 yds.

Thank You so much, the most informative video I have seen to date on the supported spindle. I can't wait to get to spinning! I have my spindle almost converted for this technique... Thank You again!

    Hi,
Mine is just a smooth shaft tapered to a point. You can do it either way, tie a leader on down by the whorl and spiral the yarn up the shaft and let it catch in the hook at the top, or just fluff out a few fibres catch them in the hook and give it a twirl, as soon as you get a little length of thread push it down the shaft and you have a leader anyway!
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks - Bye for now!

    Hi Susan,
Hmmm, do I have to answer that? Try searching for this term 'Lhamo spins more' in RUclips (tried to give the link, but my reply disapeared), have you see one of those before? I have that kind too, but don't think I'm any where near as good as Lhamo on it!
My latest toy (when I get time to have a play!) is a stylus for my Suzie wheel, looks like it will be fun!
    Thanks for watching!

Aha, the secret is many hours of practice over several years! I know it doesn't come as easy as that first off!

Thank you, this is wonderful! That style of spindle had mystified me until now. About how many yards of yarn can that put up in one go?

I really think that your video is a very useful tool for beginners like me. I have one problem - my supported spindle has a hook at the top, not a notch and I'm not sure how to secure the fiber. Should I use a leader?
