This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you!! Every other similar video was either free motion quilting, or their solution was “first you need to get this, and then you need to buy this and this and this...” Your video was so empowering!
This literally is the only helpful video I've found on this besides quilting as you go. Lol. All the others did not have standard size sewing machines. Lol. Thank you so much!!!!
I have to say that when i saw your video, i thought...really, shiny happy world? I was sceptical. But i actually was able to do a large throw quilt using your method. When i would start to get frustrated, i would say to myself, wendy says stuff and fluff. I cant thank you enough. You have made my sewing time a shiny happy world! Will be checking out your other videos!
Sorry about the confusion! I actually AM using a walking foot - it's the black moving bit behind my presser foot. It's built into my Pfaff and not nearly as bulky as most of walking foot attachments so I try to remember to point it out but this time I forgot. I just added a note in the video description. My advice for future projects is to break the quilting up into small chunks of time. All that stuffing and fluffing is hard on the back, shoulders and arms. I try to keep it to 1 hour at a time.
I must add my thanks for this. I too was tearing my hair out as none of the "quilting services" which have long-arm facility, were willing to do sewing in the valley. Now I shall take on the quilting at home and give my machine a really good workout with my first ever king-sized quilt.
About 5 years ago I took classes and made a king size sampler quilt entirely by hand. I ended up with a lovely quilt but it was an awful experience as the tutor was very strict and critical. Then I discovered the joys of RUclips tutorials, where information and ideas are generously shared and no one criticises my work. I've made made 4 throws and 2 baby quilts but always thought I couldn't machine quilt a full size quilt. Thanks to you, now I know better. Thanks for sharing a great technique :)
@@WendiGratz wendy... I am using your technique with a regular singer machine (with walking foot). The backing fabric i am using is puckering (it is a bed sheet - king size. Can u help me to fix the problem? Thanks... Linda
OMGoodness, Wendy you just took a load off of my shoulders! I was so worried how I would quilt my quilt because I thought I had to do all kinds of fancy shapes (you can tell I'm a rookie), but you just gave me the benefit of your experience to make my quilt (I'm going to do a throw first) easy.
I have an old 1930’s Singer crank handle sewing machine and I was emphatically told I would not be able to quilt, and then I watched your video. As a consequence of your superb advice I have just completed a king size patchwork quilt, and I want to thank you so much for sharing your expertise and for giving me the confidence and know how to complete my project. Truly inspiring!
Oh my gosh, this is exactly what I got on RUclips to research! You’re my new hero! I’ve been quilting for over 40 years but machine quilting still intimidates me. Until now!! Thank you for a simple, super easy-to-follow, and informative video!!
Thanks Wendi, you've just saved me a fortune since I thought I was going have to use the services of a longarm quilter or buy a new machine. Now I'm looking forward to finishing these quilt tops myself. I only want simple quilting and so this is perfect!
Thank you so so much! I'm a brand new quilter but this is in my February and i have the goal of making quilts for our 6 children for Christmas. I thought my only option was to hand tie.... now i know I can truly QUILT my finished tops! Bless you!!
Thank you for this! Everyone else says "standard" sewing machine but when I play the video, it was a fancy quilting one! I love you gave straight forward, no fancy, no complicated stuff. Thank you thank you thank you im doing a queen size and I do not have any fancy quilting machine... just a regular standard machine... I can do this!!
I've been searching for weeks to find this kind of information!! Thank you so much!!!! I feel like I know exactly what to do now. I'm ready thanks to you!! 🎉
Thank you Thank you Thank you..... soooooooo much for this video... I have watch so many videos and none of them helped me like this one. I'm making my first quilt ever for a new little baby in our family. I ordered a presser foot kit for my sewing machine that arrived late and then when I got it it didn't have the foot I needed to finish my project... with your video i am confident I can finish it without all the fancy feet and gloves.
Hi Wendy! Thank you so much for this video. I'm 58 yrs young and made my very 1st quilt as a Quilt of Valor Project. I was nervous about quilting the quilt, but thought I should just jump in and go for it. I used a walking foot and rolled the sides and top and bottom of the quilt-WHAT A PAIN! That actually made it harder. so after watching your video , I was able to position and turn the quilt especially with the needle down. I made X's in the border, sun rays coming out from around an eagle, stitch in the ditch around and through the star blocks and it was so EASY thanks to you! The quilt was a twin size quilt and I know that I could do any size I want now.
Thanks for the video! I am doing my first block quilt, and I want to do all of the work myself because it is a gift for my sister. I was really nervous about trying to quilt on my own, but you made me feel much more confident about it
I have watched so many videos on machine quilting but most do not do large quilts. I learned a lot from this one. I think my biggest takeaway is that the process is slow and can't be rushed if you want to do it right. My second takeaway is that the quilt doesn't need to be heavily pinned. Thank u for this.
I have used this method for two full size and two twin size quilts but since we have two king size beds in the house I have been afraid to make that size because I did not know I would be able to squeeze it through my machine. Thanks for letting me know you have been able to do just that. On to the next!
Hi Wendi, just saw your video on how to quilt a large quilt on a home sewing machine. You have given me the confidence in tackling my king size quilt to start quilting it. Thank you for sharing your tips.
This is great! My mother is a hand quilter and I just don't have the patience for it! I asked her about using a machine before and she acted like I was a blasphemer and wouldn't tell me anything! This video was perfect!
DebbyLee Maxine I know exactly what you mean!😃 Because I learned to quilt when I was young, quilting by machine was unheard of and considered not pure quilt! I'm so glad I have given myself permission to do my own thing!😏
I will be forever thankful for this tutorial for using our standard home sewing machine for a large quilt. I'm a new quilter and I dreaded the undertaking since I went a little overboard with my scrap quilt blocks. It was either use my fabric budget to give to a long arm shop or do it myself. It has sat in my "to do" stack for months. Now I can't wait to get it finished, thanks to you. How I stumbled across this site is a blessing I will be grateful to, for time imorial. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
patricia chandler You're so welcome! Take a look at some of my videos on Quilt As You Go. It's a great way to get the dense quilting most of us love, but only quilting one block at a time. Magic!
this is the hardest darn thing to find! as a newbie, I had no idea this was called "top stitching" so I only had free motion quilting results while I was trying to find straight line stitching. Thank you!
Thank you so much for putting this video out! I am a novice quilter and was struggling with the quilting process due to the bulk of the quilt and the small space of my machine. I was so discouraged I put my project (baby quilts for my new grand niece and nephew!) down and had no desire to try again. That is until I watched your video! I can tell you that with your tips and encouragement I have now successfully finished the quilting portion of both quilts! Yay! Now on to the binding - which may also be a huge challenge as somehow I didn't measure my front and backing correctly! Well, I will figure something out, but at least I was able to move forward thanks to you! : )
Thank you!! This is what I needed! Everything else is... you need this and you need that and step 1,2 ,3,4,5,6,7,8 etc, making everything seem so huge and so difficult and seem incredibly impossible!! Clearing off my dining table now! :-)
This video just saved me so many grey hairs haha I'm making my very first quilt and it's a queen size. I was wondering how I was going to get it through my machine and you just saved the day Wendi! Thank you! :D
Thank you!!! You are a great instructor. I was about ready to give up looking for a simple set of instructions on home quilting my king size quilt. Some (many) people really like to talk a lot, and say nothing at the same time. Again thank you!!
Thank you so much! I've made quilt tops but have never had the courage to actually quilt one. I'm so happy you posted this. My quilt came out great! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Wendy, thank you so much for this. I am working on my 2nd quilt ever and it's a queen. No pressure!!! You gave me the confidence to do this on my quilt. I'll review this again before I start.
Thank you! Your video is the only one I have found that actually shows the stuff and fluff method to quilt. Your machine even makes a slight bang noise like mine makes, which made me think I was going to break it. Thank you, thank you!
I kept thinking you were going to sew your thumb, probably because I snagged the needle into my thumbnail yesterday. Thanks for explaining all this so well. I only have about 5 1/2 inches to the right of the needle, but I'll see how big I can go. I'm new to all this, and just about to try your method with a baby quilt.
Thank you! I’ve made a baby quilt and was thinking about making a twin size quilt for my nephews someday, but I didn’t think my sewing machine could handle it after struggling with a baby quilt. I was rolling the end of the quilt and flipping it over, like you did, half way. Stuff and fluff looks a lot easier to handle the bulk than my rolling. I’ll have to try this once I get more quilt fabrics and batting.
I've been looking for a simple explanation for weeks until I found this. Thanks very much for being so clear for a beginner like me!. Regards from Uruguay.
Thank you so very much! I've never quilted anything and need to make a queen bedspread with some upholstery fabric. I've sewn literally all my life, so handling fabric for any reason doesn't phase me, but I could not find anything about directional stitching. Knew to start in the middle, suspected rolling the sides would be too bulky, but couldn't decide on whether I'd have to flip top to bottom with each row. This confirms taking the easier route. Thank you so much!
I am so glad I ran across your video. I am ready to start quilting a full size quilt for the first time. You really simplified the process for me. Thank you so much!
Invaluable video Wendi - thanks so much. I haven't made a quilt for about 20 years so its great to have simple, well explained tutorials on you tube these days.
Making my second quilt ever in my life. It’s a twin size. My first quilt was for a toddler bed. I’ve practiced on some quilt sandwiches and have decided to do intersecting wavy lines as straight line quilting maybe, or I might stitch in the ditch as you demo’d. This is great and doable! Stuff and fluff! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this video I was trying the rolled up technique on my very first quilt and my lines were horrible this method will make the next 2 throws I’m doing as gift turn out so much better.
Thank you Wendi. I really appreciate your sharing this info with me. I have been sewing all of my quilts by hand for years now I'm going to finish my baby quilts using your method. This will make it very strong and stand up to all the washings. Yeah.
Thank you! This was also EXACTLY what I needed to learn. I have done a full size, but I didn't know how to manage a King. My next full will be easier, too. Several videos I watched advocated the "roll" method and I always end up stuffing. LOL Now I know I just need to keep weight tension off, fluff, then stuff!
This was very helpful. I'm doing the quilting for my first quilt tomorrow and I was nervous about trying to fit it through my machine. Now I'm not as nervous!
Thank you! That was a very good video. I'm about to quilt a full size quilt and I will be doing the stitch in the ditch method. I forgot which direction I was supposed to sew in, but thanks to your video my memory was refreshed. It's been at least 5 years, since making my last quilt, but will not wait so long for the next.👍🏻
I've been doing some contract sewing for a few months, doing basically this. I'm not a quilter, so I'm thrilled to see that I've been doing it right LOL! It seemed so intuitive that I assumed I must be wrong :)
Thank you! This video is just what I needed. My quilt is 103 x 106 and getting difficult to work on (and measure). I had just about made up my mind that I was going to send it out and have it finished professionally because I didn't think I could work my kings size quilt through my regular machine. You've given me hope! Cuz I really did want to do it entirely myself. Eileen Cole
That was very helpful. I made a disappearing 9 patch queen size quilt and it has large and small pieces. We tied it off in some places but it needed more stitching to hold it together better, so I'm going to stitch it around the large squares. So glad I watched this first.
I know you're probably not going to like this answer - but I really strongly recommend getting a walking foot. It makes a HUGE difference and is really the only way to feed both layers through at the same speed. Some people are able to do free motion quilting with the feed dogs down, but not usually for straight lines - and I've never been able to do it and have it look good.
just found this & appreciate the straightforwardness and ease; I find it encouraging for a 'very' noob.. Looking to put a new facing /exterior on a sleeping bag;, turning it into a comforter/quilt-ish blanket.. already have the exteriors sized/placed, but wasn't sure about getting a sleeping bag through the machine. will give this a try; hoping that my cantankerous Singer stitch & cuss will cooperate.. (626). it's .. pretty bulky./thick.
Thank you for taking the time to give hope to all of us attempting this at home for the first time, I'm very optimistic about trying this on my older singer home sewing machine. Awesome instructions and easy to understand. Thanks a million 💟😉
Hi Wendy. Thanks for the video. On a whim yesterday I made the top part of a quilt for my niece and was trying to figure out what I was going to do. So Glad I found this video! Thanks!
Thank you Wendy I've just completed my first quilt, it really is a labour of love isn't it! I don't want to ruin it and thought I might try hand quilting but I have watched this video and taken your advice and will give it a go.
Wonderful tutorial Wendy! I just finished a top for a quilt I'm working on and was looking at prices for long arms. Thanks for saving me the hassle and money! :)
I have been working on a tumbling blocks quilt and am topstitching it a 1/4" from the ditch. It is a crib quilt and I have discovered that trying this technique causes for lots of shifting and re arranging making this technique cumbersome. For a strip quilt that you are working on, this is perfect, however for topstitch quilting in small areas, this is a no go.
This is exactly what I do. I've quilted a couple oversized king quilts on my DSM and get them through without any problems. Thanks for posting your video!
Thank you for your video, Wendi! I have just a standard sewing machine and am going to purchase a walking foot. I have always wanted to have a go at quilting but thought that I would have to buy a special quilting machine! After watching your video I will have a go at making a quilt with my standard sewing machine!
Little Bay is so right!! i thought quilting was about using what you have to make beautiful and functional fabric items. even if i could afford all the gizmos and gadgets...what would my grandmother think when she did it all with cardboard, flour sacks and thread?? love your practical, to the point, instructions. Thank you!!
I am so glad this video showed up for me! I just put together a kind size quilt scratching me head as to how I will get through the machine quilting! Thanks again!💕
Your are great. I'd like to learn more about your techniques. You are a very good teacher and very easy to follow. Very happy I stumbled upon your video.
Perfect, perfect video. Thank you so much. All the other ones were too long or had information on things I don’t have, or want to buy. Thank you again.
I love this video. I always wondered if you had to start in very middle of the quilt . Ive done it that way and its agrivating. So nice to know I can start in the middle on the edge . So helpful.
squeal I'm so excited! I still have my old sewing machine I bought with my first paycheck lol I'm excited to know I'll be able to quilt with it. It's old but I love it. subscribed and really enjoyed your video. Thank you and blessings everyone! Happy crafting.
I'm about 32 feet away from having a queen sz quilt finished with quilt in the ditch!! My first ever quilt mind you. I've been using rubberized garden gloves to pull the seams open & it's been a BEAR, so don't think I'll ever try to quilt on a domestic machine again unless it's a twin or smaller. Not going to bed tonight until I'm finished. lol
thank you so much,,,I just made MY VERY FIRST QUILT EVER,,,,SEWING IT ALL BY HAND,,,A queen size, and it was to commemorate my 65th birthday and it came out lovely. Made it under three weeks,,,so proud. Then Ma saw it and wants me to make her one, but I think I am going to USE YOUR METHOD..now that I saw how it is done. Thank you thank you so much.
+junie richardson LOL! Good for you! Well, I'm doing the same thing...my mom passed away earlier this year, and I found an unfinished queen size quilt in her material stash. She was a 100% hand quilter, so my plan was to finish it the same way. She had most of the top of the quilt finished; I completed that so far. Now, I have to sandwich it all together. Bought the curved pins, and plan to use my large dining room table to do that. I quilted a purse years ago...but never a blanket. First one for me! This method looks doable!
Thank you very much for this. I'd seen several videos; but yours was the first one that showed it so simply and one bit at a time. I found it to be very helpful.
Great video! Makes me feel like this is truly possible. One thing I would definitely suggest is wearing quilting gloves. They’re just nice for holding on to the fabric, which can be slippery. 😊
Thank you, Wendi! I have this same machine and have shied away from anything bigger than a lap quilt. With your example, I can move ahead and try something bigger. ♥
Thank you so much for the instruction! I was trying to figure out how to quilt my first quilt on my standard Brother sewing machine. You made it look so easy and do-able, going to try this technique after post!
I was getting frustrated with the twin sized quilt I was trying to machine quilt. I have it rolled and pinned because it seems so entirely bulky otherwise. But with you showing this, it seems so much less. Thank you so much.
Thank you. Exactly what I needed to know. I inherited some very old quilt tops that I want to finished. I can set my sewing machine on my large kitchen island and have a go.
Thank you for this video! I was looking for this exactly, even though I might want to do circles starting small in the center and then going out! (Circle shaped quilt/blanket) thank you for showing how you do this on a standard machine, its really helpful!
Thank you so much for generously sharing your videos, free patterns, sewing tips. You make it all so doable! Love your blog, buy your patterns, and am looking forward to making the bird quilt next. Cheers!
Thank you this is a great video. I have just started to sandwich my quilt and I was wondering how I was going to quilt it. This looks easier than I thought.
Thank you. This is so simple. I’ve been stressing about my quilt. I just don’t want to ruin it😂 but I know no one will return my quilt just because I didn’t stitch perfectly in the ditch or my corners don’t match.
thank you wendy for your tutorials, I too have a pfaff and find its convenient for the walking part I am in the middle of doing a twin size quilt and didn't start from the middle but on the end :( luckily my pattern is forgiving.
Thank you!!! I'm a beginner and was about to quit before I got started when I heard people pay 100$+ just to have the quilt finished👀 on a special machine
thank you so much for this tutorial. a while back, i learned the hard way, you cant really free motion stitch very well when all you have is a standard size machine. LOL. so i will definatly follow your instructions .
G'day, i'm just starting the struggle of large quilt on normal machine, and thought i'd YT for help, thanks for the vid, i'll try your way and see how it goes :)
thank you!! i guess i made the mistake of restuffing my down blanket from the sides in, and i should now do the next one restuffing the middle sections first, restich that up and move outwards. thank you! and i see u kept it together with safety pins instead of regular large stick pins, i kept getting stuck on it when i was pushing it through. better idea u had - this way it all stays together, and u don't have damaged pin pricked hands, like i had. lol. i guess i wasn't thinking! thank you again!!

I am so glad I ran across your video. I am ready to start quilting a full size quilt for the first time. You really simplified the process for me. Thank you so much!
This is literally the best video I’ve found!
SO glad to find this - exactly what I’ve been trying to figure out how to do. Thank you for this clear, confident demo!
Thank you! I wanted to graduate to larger quilts but didn't want to pay to have them sandwiched by quilt company. Excellent instruction!
Thank you so much for this video I was trying the rolled up technique on my very first quilt and my lines were horrible this method will make the next 2 throws I’m doing as gift turn out so much better.
Loved your video...the easiest way to do it. But the way you did it has encouraged me to lose my fears. Thank you.❤
Thank you Wendi.
LOL
Now I know I just need to keep weight tension off, fluff, then stuff!
This was very helpful. I'm doing the quilting for my first quilt tomorrow and I was nervous about trying to fit it through my machine. Now I'm not as nervous!
I just found this and I feel so happy I dont actually need a huge sewing machine, just a bigger workspace!!
Yes! The twin size quilt I just finished used 14 bobbins to finish.
Thank you I really needed this. I'm new to quilting and was very disappointed at prices of the quilting machines. Thanks so much
Thank you ! I’ve been searching and searching to find a video that will show me how to finish my quilt with just an ordinary machine ,
I have been working on a tumbling blocks quilt and am topstitching it a 1/4" from the ditch. It is a crib quilt and I have discovered that trying this technique causes for lots of shifting and re arranging making this technique cumbersome. For a strip quilt that you are working on, this is perfect, however for topstitch quilting in small areas, this is a no go.
Just stumbled on to this video while looking to machine quilt my first quilt. This is great instruction and exactly what I needed. Thank you!
Thank you so much, I was afraid to attempt a bigger quilt. I'm working on my first ever quilt right now and looking forward to finishing it!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Just what I needed to know to finish off my quilt instead of killing my hands to tie off the quilt I’m working on.
Your are great. I'd like to learn more about your techniques. You are a very good teacher and very easy to follow. Very happy I stumbled upon your video.
I
Really clear and excellent filming. Calm instructions and exactly to the point. Much appreciated thank you. 👏👍😊
Perfect, perfect video. Thank you so much. All the other ones were too long or had information on things I don’t have, or want to buy. Thank you again.
I have seen so many videos but this one is the best.you just explain it so simple and clear 👍
Super helpful! Thank you! This is my first quilt & I had no idea how I would stitch it all
I like the term stuff & fluff - perfect!
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm a beginner and I just picked up a new machine and was worried about the throat and pushing the quilt through.
Hello Wendy I was browsing and come upon some of your videos, I appreciate your techniques, I will use most of them thank you
Thank you for this video!
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. I now know that I don't have to splash out on a hugely expensive machine! I am going to try this.
Watching this in 2022 making my first quilt. So helpful and a great tutorial!
thank you wendy for your tutorials, I too have a pfaff and find its convenient for the walking part I am in the middle of doing a twin size quilt and didn't start from the middle but on the end :( luckily my pattern is forgiving.
I love this. Thank you. Actual teaching! Not selling!
Big huge THANK YOU. I'm a beginner and I had not a clue of how to do this on my machine. No
Now I can finish my projects
Thank you!!! I'm a beginner and was about to quit before I got started when I heard people pay 100$+ just to have the quilt finished👀 on a special machine
Totally worth it. This can be very tedious on a large quilt!
thank you so much for this tutorial. a while back, i learned the hard way, you cant really free motion stitch very well when all you have is a standard size machine. LOL. so i will definatly follow your instructions .
Thank you! I knew this could be done but I didn't have the experience to try it on a larger piece. This was just the info I needed! :)
G'day, i'm just starting the struggle of large quilt on normal machine, and thought i'd YT for help, thanks for the vid, i'll try your way and see how it goes :)
Thank You! I’m a self taught newbie and this is my nemesis...
thank you!! i guess i made the mistake of restuffing my down blanket from the sides in, and i should now do the next one restuffing the middle sections first, restich that up and move outwards. thank you! and i see u kept it together with safety pins instead of regular large stick pins, i kept getting stuck on it when i was pushing it through. better idea u had - this way it all stays together, and u don't have damaged pin pricked hands, like i had. lol. i guess i wasn't thinking! thank you again!!
