  • More simple advice - trust me though, if you operate like this, you will improve. I've used this ethos for not just guitar, but for other "athletic" focused skills. For example, drums, skating, hockey, etc.
Obviously this video assumes a few things like good technique, and even knowing what techniques are out there, but if you can seek those things out and then apply them in the method suggested here, the sky's the limit!
Also...some of you might have been wondering, where have I been the last few months? I injured my finger playing roller hockey and haven't played guitar in a month :(
I'm recovering though and am slowly getting back to playing more.

i suppose most of these tips can be summed up in being very intentional and mindful about what we write and play. nice lil clip trevor, thanks :)

The description of the vid can help, and obviously the short assumes a lot - assumes you have some good basic technique, knowledge of techniques, ideas of what even sounds good, etc. But as a very general baseline for developing athletic skills imo, being able to just create a committed idea (you can work very slowly, deciding on each note, one note at time) while actually working through it until you can play it in your sleep, followed by repeating that process, can work. At least for me. The writing approach is nice because presumably what you write sounds at least half decently interesting to you (rather than some prescribed drill which might not capture sounds you'd actually use in your playing). On another note, when you are learning to play something, go slowly! Think of it as making repertoire for yourself.

Record as often as possible. See how your playing lines up with the grid and correct the timing issues assuming they sound bad. Be critical of your playing and what needs fixing. I think a lot of guitarists sort of float through their playing and don’t consider technique, timing, dynamics, picking intensity, etc.
Another thing I see male players do a lot is being too heavy handed. Good tone also = playing in tune. Don’t fret too hard and don’t pick too hard so the first sounding of the note out of tune.
Also, record a lot of you’re don’t already. Recording in a quiet environment is gonna give you a more focused view of what the guitar is actually doing when not covered by a full band. Did I mention recording more?
