    Thanks muchly Charlie I am looking to buy this type of amp for my studio recording only, and am very appreciative of the time you have put in to nail down the pros and cons. I think I have pretty similar taste to you in Bass tones so your thoughts were very helpful. About 25 years ago I had a wonderful Yamaha Bass amp with graphic eq built in, unfortunately, I had to sell it in order to move from WA to Victoria due to a shortage of work opportunities. So my search has begun to find a quality replacement for that beautiful amp. I am a guitarist primarily but thru my teaching of bass developed a strong affinity to the bass, and having my own recording studio just love putting down all tracks and then fine-tuning them to reach the perfect composition. Thanks again Charlie!

    Just received mine and very happy. The things I'd critique:
    * I would have preferred the classical grey front rather than black.
    * The power chord sticks way out of the back which means you can't put it next to the wall
    * The footswitch doesn't come with it - it's a must have
    I had no trouble setting up the app and wifi

      Good points! I think they changed the color so it looks in line with the mustang guitar amps that use the same program and to avoid confusion with the other rumbles that are similar size and wattage. Maybe? 🤔

    • @KeithWhittingham
      @KeithWhittingham 5 лет назад +4

      Fixed the power cord issue. Got a plug with a 90° bend in ($3 from ebay delivered) and replaced it. For anyone that wants to do the same the standard 90° plug sends the wire up and not down as you would want - no problem, there are two screws that hold the male plug in the cabinet, remove these two, pull out the plug half an inch, rotate it 180° and screw it back in again.

    I'd liked to know which Bass Guitar we have listened to
    This little Amp (together with the 800) is by far the most versatile bass combo on the market.
    And it weighs nothing (13 lbs). It's really fun and if you buy the fender foot switch you can make use of the looper, switch presets and tuner.
    It can be remotely controlled by a bluetooth app which is also very convenient.
    But on the downside are also some things:
    The built in speakers do not sound great.
    You have not recorded with a mic but via the line out, therefore it sounded better as it does over the speakers.
    The quality of the effects are decent and you can live perfectly with it. But effects Pedals like the ones from BOSS and others for instance have better effects quality,
    They sound significantly better and can be fully edited using a desktop computer or laptop. The Fender amp lacks this option painfully.
    You have restrictions on how many effects you can put into your signal chain. Normal effects you can use a lot. But when it comes to a resource hungry effect like the Jazz Chorus simulation, you will reach the limit of number of effects to be used very soon. Maybe two more effects until you reach the limit (in this specific case with the jazz chorus).
    Another big downside is that you cannot access and edit your presets with a computer via USB. Very inconvenient.
    You can make backups but only online at the fender portal via WLAN.
    Thats why you have WLAN only. It's of no big use else - no killer feature at all..
    All in all it still is a very great amp and I have fun with it when doing rehearsals or small gigs. But mostly I prefer my Effects Pedal when I go directly over the PA with no monitor.
    It's cheap and it's of course worth the money.
    I think abou putting better speakers into it, maybe it could become a killer combo then.

    I'm getting it for the effects loop. I want the option to use it with my helix for way more complicated presets (mostly Muse multitrack with clean, fuzz, and effects), but then plug directly in and use the amp by itself whilst still having lots of usable effects.

    I recently purchased the 800 Stage version and to be honest, it has way too much technology for a ham & egger like me. I've always been just happy to have a good rig to plug in & play. That said, the SVT Rig preset is scary good...and the amp weighs 39 pounds. Back in the day, I played SVTs and a GK combo for the passed 18 years. The GK doesn't compare and weighs 95 pounds. I played it in a small club recently and it did a great job. I have to take some chances with it and see what it can do on an open highway.
    I'm glad that at the end of the review you found it to your liking although I suspect there are still reservations in your mind. I always swear never to buy something in the first year of production and I am intimidated by the plethora of choices. But I am exploring and it's been kind of fun I just want it to be reliable and in less then a month now it has been that.
    Have you figured out the foot switch yet? I'd love to know how to use it.
    Thanks!

    Hi dear,
    if you remember I read with interest your honest review of rumble 40 v3 (which I also own). I'm thinking whether or not to buy the rumble 40 studio that seems like a nice tool for home use. I wanted to ask you some questions.
    1) The weight. From the technical data seem to me to be equal weight, confirm?
    2) As soon as you select an amplifier preset, can the tone adjustment be done with the bass / mid / treble knobs? Obviously if I do not overwrite the preset I will lose the changes, right?
    3) I love rumble v3 for its sound quality and practicality, but taking into account that you need to learn how to manage the various settings, would you recommend moving from v3 to this model?

    • @chuckbiscuit23
      @chuckbiscuit23  6 лет назад +6

      1) yes, from what I can tell it seems to weight the same.
      2) Yes, the tone knobs can make quick adjustments to any preset. It will not change the re write the preset unless you save the changes
      3) There is a slight learning curve to learn how to manipulate the settings. But it's not too bad. They do have the V3 in the parameters so if you like the way that one sounds you can make a preset to be exactly like your V3. If you want simple, stick with what you have. But you can easily make the Rumble studio be just like your V3 if you want it to. I would absolutely recommend getting this. The only reason to not upgrade to this amp would be if you prefer the simple features and layout on the V3. The Studio can provide you with so much more versatility that it's 100% worth it. I already found it a massive upgrade when I brought it to my small church band. I was able to really eq out some problem frequencies and add some compression which game me the best tone i've ever had playing with my church group.
      Hope that helps! Thanks for your comment and checking out my videos!

      2) Yes, the tone knobs can make quick adjustments to any preset. It will not change the re write the preset unless you save the changes
      ==========================
      Simply you can modify tone on the fly or You need press another button to enter in menu options? Of course You've to save changes and overwrite presets if You don't want to loose your changes isn't it?

    • @chuckbiscuit23
      @chuckbiscuit23  6 лет назад

      Alfio Ferlito yes. The simple bass, mid, treble knobs can adjust any preset without pushing any other buttons. But you have to have the pre set menu highlighted for it to work. If you are highlighting the fx chain the tone knobs will not wotl I do believe. Ill have to double check though

    Great review! Just one question, how does the Rumble Studio 40 handle the low b-string? I would like to buy a smaller amp but everything under 12' speaker and 100 watts sounded very boxy and couldn't handle the low b-string. Thanks!

    • @chuckbiscuit23
      @chuckbiscuit23  5 лет назад +3

      Thanks for your question. I think it depends on the volumes you run your amp at. I use the amp at home, church, and for small dinner crowd gigs. The low b has no issues with the presets that I've made. But going through some of the stock presets and pushing the amp at higher volumes the low b has issues. So really all depends on how loud you push the speaker. And how you program your eq, compression, and amp/cab models inside the amp

      The few presets on this amp that are flat, i'm not a fan of. The amp uses amp modeling and I don't care for most of them. I have my physical stereo pedals going through the effects loop of my studio 40 as I play a lot of Ambient Bass and listen through headphones to bask in the lush stereoness of them etc..
    However the virtual stereo effect pedals that are on the studio are not in stereo but mono when I play them.My two reverb pedals and 1 delay pedal have both left and right inputs and outputs,so completely stereo pedals.
    The sound from my physical pedals ARE in stereo through my headphones when they are in the effects loop..
    But the sound from the actual amps built in stereo effects are NOT in stereo WHILE the physical pedals are plugged into the effects.. Anyone with ideas?

      Gillette Wilkinson I've never tried amplitube. Im sure it's bad ass though. I think with both you can tweak until you're hearts content. That's a great question! Im pretty happy with the fender. But im guessing you'd have more to play around with using amplitube. But the fender is easily portable!

      Gillette Wilkinson I wouldn't recommend the rumble if you're looking for amp models to record. Amplitube probably has a better grip on that. The fender is just so convenient that it's all in one and you don't need the computer, monitors ect... the fxs are more than tweakable so in that areana it's about a horse a piece. Unless you get yourself a fractal fx8 like myself lol!! Those are bad ass!!! I like the fact that I can bring this amp to church or my little duos or trios and I can add a graphic eq to fix the frequencies of the room and play around with my compression settings just using my phone when I'm on stage.

      No footswitch on these. Fender makes one to go with the guitar amps. Not sure how well that one would work with the bass ones. The app works better than any footswitch would though in my opinion

    • @heartywhistler
      @heartywhistler 5 лет назад

      No, it is sold as a separate unit: 4 button foot switch. Not cheap - $79.99. MGT-4 footswitch. Same footswitch as used with the Mustang GT guitar amps, according to the Fender website: shop.fender.com/en-US/bass-amplifiers/contemporary-digital/rumble-studio-40/2376000000.html. Scroll down aways, it says, "Optional MGT-4 footswitch for control of presets and effects, tuner and looper access." I think the footswitch is needed to use the 60 second looper. There is a cheaper Fender MS4 footswitch, which looks almost identical, but it might not work with this amp. Since the Fender website lists the MGT-4, that's what I'd go for.

    Charlie, Question. Our bass player has this Fender Studio 40 amp. We want to connect it to a sound board to balance it out with the rest of the band, but, we want to use the speaker of the amp as a monitor for the bass player. He has a smaller Acoustic Image Coda R amp that he has been using with a direct out. When we connected it to the board via the Direct Out it seem to have muted the speaker on the amp. With the Fender Studio 40 will that happen if we connect to the Pre Amp line out? Thank you for any information you can offer. Great video by the way. Good information.

    • @chuckbiscuit23
      @chuckbiscuit23  5 лет назад

      It's all in how you dial in your preset. The built in presets are not set up the greatest. The best settings for a punchy tone would be using the vintage button and changing the cab size. The vintage button in the amp pre settings add nice little mid bump that help keep it from getting to muddy. Also I use the 2×10 cab model that also helps tighten up the tone. And depending on how you set your compression that will help with the punchy tone your looking for.

    This was a good and honest review. Skip to 7:38 to hear the amp.
    This amp is an example of how Marketing and Sales can over complicate a BASS AMP in an attempt to justify their positions and try to charge customers more for things they do not need or want. Far too many rediculous bells and whistles made by non-players. For example, BT, WiFi, Distortion and endless patches that simply sound horrific, are not necessary.
    *"The basic Rumble 40 is half the price and twice as good."*
    Both amps will sound great but this one is simply too much- to quote *your word "Obnoxious."* Despite using the qualifier, "NOT", you still chose that word. You also followed up by saying it is something you WOULD NOT USE and NOT DIGGING THAT ONE and NOT BLOWN AWAY. We all agree. No one is using 100 presets on a BASS AMP. That is insane and dumb. I bet Bootsy Collins, Walter Page, Miles Davis, Slam Stewart and alike used one, maybe two go-to tone(s.) There are w a y too many dumb tones that no real bassist would use. At least Fender did nail the main Bass tone.
    I do like the basic Rumble 40. You can quickly dial up a few different and very usable tones. IMO, it cannot be beat for $199, especially for casual, at home use.

      I'm guessing since you are using the DI, we are not hearing the 10" speaker of this Studio 40 or the V3 you demo'd at anytime here? Be nice to hear what that little 10" driver can do in a room. Although, I know you're trying to offer the best sound you can get for your reviews.
      AND the onboard effects of the Studio amps' remind me of some of those bass multi-effects pedals I've purchased in the past. They are tiny computers and can be daunting with all the options and steps necessary to get where you want to be.
      I finally got my Zoom MS-60B multi-effects pedal dialed in where I can use it live at gigs.
      Took me years to figure it out, lol, I'd get frustrated and park it for months at a time. Til I sat down last fall and took the time to have it do what I want, after about 3 years of owning it. But there are still many features I don't know how to achieve or dare to try for fear of losing my current settings I know, jeez, sad but true.
      Oh well, good work here. peace, e.

    • @chuckbiscuit23
      @chuckbiscuit23  5 лет назад +1

      @@ernieD I know exactly what you mean. I suppose you could compare it with those multi fx pedals. I think the layout of making the amp sounds and adding the fx to it like a pedal board helps the ease of use. But I get it. My patience is very limited when it comes to dialing things in. I think amp does a pretty good job. But I think there are some things it could do better. The app makes all the difference I think. Although its not a nice as the app Marshall uses for their guitar code amps. But im sure itll get better in the future.

I was disappointed that you turned your nose up at almost every preset. Maybe some of us might like some of those. I get it. You're a rock star and we should strive to be like you. My point is you really didn't review this amp. On each preset you played a few seconds of scales or runs. It really didn't give us a feel for that sound. It's not aimed, in any way to the kind of thing you elude to. There are many people that have complained it's not right for gigging, for example, but it's is simply not designed for that. If you are using this for what it is designed for, it's absolutely great and will live happily in a studio, covering many different styles
