This is my first time seeing your channel. This is so heartbreaking to hear what I think is a lot of mixed emotions at the surface as you share your experience. And I am here to say that you are doing a wonderful job protecting your energy hence why I assume negative ppl might to be around you. You just had to make a few adjustments which is still a great ways to protect your energy. This being open to seeing who is around you and how you pivoted beautifully, as it sounds. Painful but beautiful.
To be honest, I have experience a lot of hatred especially in the work place in America. I think misery loves company but not just from miserable people. They find satisfaction in converting or controlling others' energies to match theirs or become even worst. To find a messed up sort of comfort in that type of sick emotional abuse.
I thought I would teach for a little bit but I changed my mind after becoming a yoga instructor for a short duration of time and I could imagine that amount of growth your students have experienced with you as their instructor! I wish you truly the best in finding a place that brings calming contentment or if not pure joy!

      Enlightenment of the Minority
I was told here in the US by a black Christian that I was going to hell! My crime? Not being Christian!
He went from being a minority black to a majority Christian and happily embraced all the hate & division that his religion preaches
But then he will face discrimination because of his skin color and back will come the Enlightenment - "We must not judge people by skin color, we must treat all people equally" etc etc
But as a Majority Christian it is fine and dandy to judge people by religion & hate and abuse them!
      Funny morals we have

EVERY single teacher friend of mine that went to Korea, eventually leaves after 2 years or less. The reasons why, are usually the same. I can only think of ONE friend that kinda stayed long term. Eventually, she had to split her time between the states and Korea to stay sane. I've been listening to my friends experiences about teaching in Korea for almost 20 years now. Nothing seems to change.

Its funny to me people are now talking about how bad things can really get over there.
Its not surprising, imo, simply due to how dramatically different the nation is. I never saw what the hype was for going over there, i've never met anyone except 1 person in my whole entire life who went over to Asia to teach english and when i wanted to speak to her about it her face and not going into the experience there let me know to leave that conversation alone. I believe a lot of it has to do with soooooo many people going over there like its a cure or like it's going to make their lives better and happy quickly. Oh and be able to get a relationship too.

@@marlak4203 It's important to note how very internal a lot of these conflicts are. I'm an American living in China for going on six years now and "how bad things can really get" aren't actually much worse than native people experience, but the difference is that foreigners (read: westerners) assess how bad "bad" really is. We westerners have a much lower threshold than do Asians and Africans when it comes to pain and suffering due to social discomfort.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I’ve never lived in east Asia long term, but I’d still like to one day. I spent 6 months there once and I’d say, as you said, a lot of it is just the same as the UK. The only difference is that the good and bad are both amplified. You’ll get treated absolutely atrociously and you know it’s because you’re a black foreigner. At the same time you’ll get treated surprisingly well, also for that reason. I think it’s often just the luck of the draw whether or not those things balance out for you. When I was there I was lucky to mostly experience the latter.

From videos I've seen of other's experiences it doesn't seem like a place for black people to stay long. I'm a Nigerian Yoruba woman who has lived in USA for years. There is more diversity here, and because of past civil right movements people know how to be tactful about things that could be racially offensive, and there are guidelines and laws to keep it in check too. I think it's very similar in Japan. I taught English for 3 years and it was a similar situation; there was no chance for promotion and that's across the board. If you learn the language and try really hard and find that niche for you to shine, then it can be quite profitable. The system certainly doesn't set foreigners up to 'succeed', but that's obviously not their aim... They just want you in and out without taking any responsibility to take care of you. Your foreignness is your selling point and that's about it. It's sad for those who genuinely want to go up the ranks and create a proper life for themselves in a country they love but it's perfect for quick, cheap labour that they can throw to the kerb when they're done with you. That's a bit extreme, but I think you know what I mean xD

Declaring herself no longer Korean but instead Asian American. America has problems for sure, but out of 300 something countries in the world. America is definitely in the top 5 of culturally accepting places. Maybe one day she'll make the next jump considering herself just "American". In casual conversations I'm getting the feeling she's starting to drift in that direction. I was near tears with exhaustion and out of 40 rooms, I could see that only about 10 were taken because large luggage has mandatory storage at reception. You cant take it in unless everyone was just travelling hand luggage. She eventually caved and said shed check again. There was only ONE overnight pod available she said she "didnt see" and a day pod. I took over night. A Korean guy came up behind me without a prebooking and proceded to book an overnight room no problem. Girl I am done. I love Korea soo much but there have been moments that made me want to leave too. I love the honesty in the video. There are soo many reasons why people should come but once you’re here you will experience the good and definitely the bad after your honeymoon phase. One thing I will say it that Korea is very much based on the way you look, pretty privilege is a thing here, if you look pretty or look like you have money, you will be treated well and that’s the sad truth. I myself have fallen victim to the insecurities that the standard of beauty brings, I’ve become more interested in brands etc. There is a lot of judgment and it makes you want to play by their rules so you’re treated better. This isn’t always the case btw some people are just genuinely nice and don’t care about what you look like I guess. Also there is a lot of foreign stereotypes so some people assume they know you before even getting to know you due to the media or foreigners they’ve met before you. These aren’t always good stereotypes so if you’re like me, you’ll sometimes feel the need to prove them wrong.

Learn that lesson now, because it will keep you away from disappointment in life. And it comes from much older than you traveller. It is one of those lessons Universe gives us to put our egos at bay. It's something to do for a year or two, I did 18 months teaching, to travel and learn a language then move on to a career with more long term potential. It's probably better to start a career with long term potential in your home country and then find internships and work in that field in a country like Korea that way you're progressing in your career.

Korea is not for everyone. Korea is for Koreans. Even when you can speak their language you are still not accepted. With a population of a mere 51 million they tend to stick together. Unfortunately as a black (beautiful) girl you will never be accepted because of the stories people hear of blacks. Thanks for your video! In the past week I've just done an infamous 'Midnight run', away from Korea, back home to the UK. I am not proud of it, but I don't regret it as my physical and mental health was being so impacted that I couldn't go on.
On my first day, I was told by my three co-workers that they were all going to hand in their notice. Talk about a positive start! Over the next month, I was subject to constant criticism: the management telling me that everything I was doing was wrong, that the parents were complaining about me, etc, etc. That, combined with a very difficult class full of spoilt kids (some no doubt with behavioral issues), a curriculum that was way too advanced, and 70's technology - proved a recipe for disaster!
So many issues would have been resolved if the parents and management recognized that kids are kids and should not be forced to sit for 9 hours a day and work through text book after textbook. For teachers - especially those not super experienced like me - it is like trying to get blood out of a stone! I don't blame the kids, however. It is insanity!
'Toxic' is the go to word to describe the school I was at, and many Hagwons in general (I worked at another one for a few months previous to this).

Lets be real. Nobody goes over to Korea to make a career out of teaching English there. Usually it's to try out a different country with the job itself being secondary to traveling or doing other fun things. Koreans are well aware of that fact and you will be compensated accordingly. As far as the work culture, its survival of the fittest out there. Us foreigners at least have the option of going back home but to the Koreans there, its their only option and reality. So it's not fair to expect the same work life balance or whatever it is that you are used to back home. It's not extra hard because we are foreigners or whatever. Its like that for everyone there literally. If you think you cant handle that, don't do it.

She’s so pretty but I got distracted by something like a white/yellow cast on her face. Might be the powder not doing so well in that light.

So sorry to hear that you had a bad experience in Korea (same as many other people in the comments). It is actually my 3rd in Korea and I am really happy here :) For sure the visas and getting further in your job are things which are true, but I have to say that I think is not really happening that much for programmers (I study AI for medical imaging). I think that the conditions in my field are very good. But as you said, it really depends on everyone's situation, so people should seek as much information as possible before moving to any country.

Thank you so much for acknowledging the plethora of possibilities that can exist for one's discomfort in a foreign country. Many people think they can ask about how a certain race, gender, or body type is treated and then evaluate the country as a whole, but it isn't always this way.

went to a hagwon for a year. stayed on for 7 1/2 years, then the owner retired. wish i was still there. most foreigners left after a year or 2 so i can understand. most of my students were adults so i was innundated with friends. i never hung out with foreigners since my dance card was always full. had so many amazing adventures. glad you had some good times.

Affer hearing all this I feel less guilty of leaving. I used to think if I just comeback to my country I would be the loser that never could adapt. But after open my heart with my family they truly agree coming back is the best for my freedom and mental health ❤

This is from my vantage point of view! *It was written in your journey of life that *you will pass through Korea* but be mindful that when that journey is over, you can never stay for a second or a minute over*
So Ro move forward not looking back and know that this is just the beginning. Lots of beautiful things awaits you in the future😘

I have heard from several people that Korea as a 2050 technology but socially and culturally they are still stuck in the 1920s.. I'm very happy for them that in the past decade they have pulled themselves up on a World class level, but along with that comes the responsibility of increasing socially also and not being left behind in Dark Ages!

Astrologically, you may not have the best lines there if we’re talking about energy and energy alone. But outside of that you’re right to let go of something that isn’t in alignment with your highest good. There’s a lot of social issues that get swept under the rug or are not talked about because of their defamation laws. You gave it your best shot and stuck it out and did something very few people are brave enough to do. I hope the rest of your travels and journey goes well!

Important questions: Did you achieve your goals? Were your goals reasonable? Was it reasonable to expect that those goals could be achieved in that environment? I wish you the best in your next chapter and hope that this one gave you more tools to make that happen.

My classmate had this experience in the mid 00's after we graduated college. She said S. Korea was an awful experience and she's white. It's like they are begging for foreign teachers but don't really want foreign teachers. She said the parents at the private school were so entitled and would speak to her like she was a dog and she said the black teachers were treated even worse.
She then went to Japan, and then finally China. She's much happier in China. There isn't anything wrong with protecting your mental peace.

I am on the fence about which between S.Korea and Japan is the worst when it comes to foreigners and work related issues. Considering also you are a woman and black, I think it weights even more on your shoulders. Not to imply they are racist at all, but you stand out as non Asian.
My understanding of Korean work environment is that is one of a kind like the japanese one, so we can't judge people for choosing rightfully to leave, for choosing their own mental and physical well being over a lifestyle that doesn't resonate with their soul purpose. I know it very well as I suffered in the past while living in Canada, where I immigrated from Italy. I had all I wanted, a great career, friends, free of any unfulfilling relationship, but after the first seven years of real growth despite some ups and downs, I became increasingly unhappy. And Canada is much easier as it is a western country. I just felt my time there was kinda up, at least for the time being ( I still have Canadian citizenship) Now I am happily married and I live in Japan, blissfully unaware of the work environment as I am just a plain housewife. So be it, take it from here to the next adventure, you are awesome.
