  • Hello Everyone!
Night Springs is probably the longest running sub plot in the Remedy setting. A simple TV show that rose up and took on a life of its own. First appearing in Alan Wake, it has shown up in every subsequent game. A mysterious town where weird things happen. But the town sometimes is a real place.
What is the nature of this mysterious town? How do the events in the episodes eventually become real? At the end of the day, What is Night Springs really?
In today's episode breakdown we will be focusing on the episode, What's In a Name. In it, a mysterious master and his apprentice carve a name into the underside of a bridge. Claiming the town as his own. The ramifications of this are reality changing.

I actually read this one a little different than you, I saw this as sort of an absolute origin story to Night Springs. By writing a new name around the town enough, he wasn't just marking territory, but metaphysically altered the name of the town once he hit a critical mass, and because its true name and his true name were the same, they merged into one entity.
I more take it that Night Springs being able to change locations and shift out of reality is due to it being both a town and a magus with deep eldritch power.
I also didn't read the officer as losing his free will at all. Police swear to serve their community, and the man he had been called to look into was his community, so there was no reason for him to stick around any longer. Reality shifted so that his staying there made no sense, but I don't think that's necessarily the same as his free will being stripped.

The hilarious production values strike again! I love that they're talking about carving his name on steel beams, but all they could afford was to rub the walls of what looks like a pedestrian tunnel.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  10 месяцев назад +9

And in the clips the actor wasn't actually scraping at the walls. Didn't want to actually deface the place lol.

I know it was due to the production value, but because of what he’s doing it could be he’s carving into reality instead of the wall

Possibly relevant: the literal meaning of eldritch is simply "strange", but the etymology is closer to "of a foreign realm". Now it's most tied to HP Lovecraft's work, which deals heavily with ideas of other planes of existence, knowledge humanity cannot handle, and terrible monsters from outer space.

Ok but I had a reality crisis for a moment because at first I thought this one was CREATED for the remaster, so it was newly made and with that thinking.... the voice of "Magus" sounds JUST like David Harewood, Mr. Door in AW2. So I thought oh this is something related to him to tie the games! But apparently this video have always existed since the first game? BUT HE STILL SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE HIM THAT I'M FREAKING OUT NOW! What is real anymore?! My brain's so desperate for lore it's making up dots to connect now? But WHY does it makes so much sense? HELP😭

I'd be interested in a lyric analysis for Balance Slays the Demon. The other Old Gods of Asgard songs all describe events that happen in the games the song is in, but while a lot of the lyrics apply to American Nightmare the game doesn't end with Alan using balance to slay the Demon and finding peace, it ends with him using light to slay the demon and it doesn't work, because "in the end it's never just the light you need." I think the song is going to be connected to Alan Wake 2, which has Alan seeking through the darkness while Saga is in the light, hopefully in the end the two will connect and find balance.

I can’t wait for AW2!! I love that you make these types of videos that analyzes the meta stuff in Alan Wake. I also love how meta this Night Springs episode kind of is. Gosh you can spend so much time playing Alan Wake and STILL find stuff in the game to analyze. While the gameplay may get repetitive, I actually love that, makes it replayable to me. Good video

Are the triangles (in the trailer of Alan Wake 2) connected to this idea? Alan has already tried using Night Springs to escape but it was just part of the fabric of the dark place maybe like a bubble in a bog. Could the triangles have anything to do with title and territory? Could Alan be using others to mark the town so that he can exist somewhere beyond the dark place? I wonder.

I absolutely love to see your perspective on these things. Remedy has made such interesting world, but I we rarely hear any theories about other supernatural entities aside from the board, former, and the thing in the dark place. Obviously, we don’t have much to go on, but I really like your suggestion that night Springs is more of an entity and less of a byproduct.

Not quite relevant to the Remedyverse; but in the tabletop RPG Werewolf The Apocalypse (Prior to 5th edition which is basically a reboot), Cities, Towns. And Villages can create a spirit embodying it in the Umbra (the Spirit World), known as a City Father or City Mother.
They reflect the nature of the town that birthed them and often carry the town'a name as their own.

This idea about identities tied to names being swapped reminds me a lot about SCP-4000. In that story, it talks about entities in a alien dimension with no names that steals your name (and anomalously steal your identity completely too) if you don't describe them with new sentences everytime you adresse them. This same rules applies to object, so long as the nature of SCP-4000 is the core intended subject in typing or talking (like an exploration log).
It's not completely the same, but in both cases it ends up really bad for victims.

There's one more Night Springs episode that I don't really get. It's the one from Quantum Break where they can't find the Narrator and are interviewing new voice actors.
Don't know if it's just a simple Easter Egg without any deep meaning, but seeing how the plot is so elaborate I can't help but feel it does actually have some meaning. Basically begging for the question: "Where is the Narrator?"
The Narrator isn't a special character in the Remedyverse (aka we can't put a face on him, we don't meet him). He's played by Lloyd Floyd, the actor who also plays Tor. Does it perhaps mean that Tor is missing, or that Lloyd won't be the Voice actor for Tor in AW2 (so that would be a real-life reference)?
Anyone else thinking about that awkward episode from Quantum Break?

I love how the "old man" is a 27 year old hipster. A REAL hipster would never have the motivation to take on such labor.
The dude just became the entity of the town itself. Kind of like how the dark place is an extension of Barbara and the entity of Bright Falls.
Your theory is interesting though, as Alan Wake himself says in American Nightmare that Night Spring is not an actual fixed place, but it moves to where it's needed to tell a story.
If you guys haven't figured it out by now. Alan Wake is the author of everything. Even Fictional versions of himself.
