She was well known and highly respected in the Japanese wrestling circuit, created many stables, held her own events and worked a lot with Japanese wrestling legends, namely Tajiri, Meiko Satomura and Emi Sakura. She was even elected president of some promotions and a co founder of Wrestling New Classic with Tajiri and Akira. Her resume at this time was already legendary which is what led to her being signed by WWE. EDIT: Forgot to add that she was also one of the few women that worked DDT, NOAH and AJPW as it was rare for them to feature women's wrestling in any capacity. She wrestled men and bumped hard for them. Kana/Asuka is a living legend. Easily my favorite wrestler.

Then she got put in a tag team with Kairi Hojo/Sane whose sole job is to be the actual jobber of the team as all she does is eat pins since Vince wont let Asuka beating his Western women be in vain!
